1943 Sophisticate Sailor #378

 MATERIALS: 

Clarks ONT Mercerized Crochet, size 5, 8 balls any color

#2 Steel Crochet Hook

2 yds Grosgrain Ribbon 1” wide

Round Elastic

Use a double thread throughout.

CROWN: 

Ch 2.

1^ST RND:  6 Sc in 2^nd ch from hook.  Do not join rnds.  

Place marker in 1^st st of each rnd to insure proper shaping.

2^ND RND:  [Insert hook in next st & pull loop thru] twice, yo & draw thru 3 loops on hook [patt st], sc in same place where last loop was pulled thru [an inc].  * Insert hook in same place as last sc & pull loop thru, insert hook in next st & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru 3 loops on hook [patt st], sc in same st where last loop was pulled thru [another inc].  Rep from * around [12 sts].

3^RD RND:  * Insert hook in same place as last sc & pull loop thru, insert hook in next st & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru all loops on hook, insert hook in same place where last loop was pulled thru & pull loop thru, insert hook in next st & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru all loops on hook, sc in same place where last loop was pulled thru [inc].  Rep from * around [18 sts].

4^TH RND:  * Insert hook in same place as last sc & pull loop thru, insert hook in next st & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru all loops on hook, ** insert hook in same place where last loop was pulled thru & pull loop thru, insert hook in next st & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru all loops on hook.  Rep from ** once more, sc in same place where last loop was pulled thru [inc].  Rep from * around [24 sts]. 

Cont thus, inc 6 sts evenly on each rnd until there are 96 sts on rnd.

Work straight without inc until piece measures 5” from start.

Continue for BRIM as follows: 

1^ST RND:  Inc as before in every 6^th patt st [112 sts].

2^ND RND:  Inc as before in every 8^th patt st [126 sts].

3^RD RND:  Work straight without inc [126 sts].

4^TH RND:  Inc as before in every 9^th patt st [140 sts].

5^TH RND:  Same as 3^rd rnd [140 sts].

6^TH RND:  Inc as before in every 10^th patt st [154 sts].

7^TH RND:  Same as 3^rd rnd [154 sts].

8^TH RND:  Inc as before in every 11^th patt st [168 sts].

9^TH RND:  Inc as before in every 12^th patt st [182 sts].

10^TH RND:  Same as 3^rd rnd [182 sts].

11^TH RND:  Inc as before in every 13^th patt st [196 sts].  Do not fasten off.

Cut wire 2” longer than circumference of Brim.  Overlap wire for 2” & sew securely. 

Now work 2 rows straight in patt st.  Fasten off. 

Lay wire on top of Brim & turn edge over it to cover it. 

Sew edge down. 

Attach thread just inside wired edge & work around in patt st over wired edge [196 sts]. 

On next rnd inc 14 sts as before [210 sts]. 

Rep last rnd [224 sts]. 

Cut wire 2” longer than this new edge, overlap it & fasten as before. 

Work 2 rnds straight in patt st.  Fasten off. 

Finish this edge same as last wired edge.

Block Hat. 

Sew ribbon inside Crown for headband. 

Put a band around outside of Crown with a bow on right front. 

Sew elastic across back to fit.
