Wrong
side of work is right side of hat.
HAT:
Ch
5. Join with sl st into a ring. Work 8 hdc in ring.
Without
joining cont around work hdc in top loop of st; work 2 hdc in each st until 45
sts in round.
Mark
this place as beg of rnd [center back].
Inc 1 st every 3rd st to end of rnd [60 sts].
Work
1 rnd even.
Inc
1 st every 4th st to end of rnd [75 sts]. Work 1 rnd even.
Inc
1 st every 5th st to end of rnd [90 sts].
Top
of crown should meas about 6” across.
Mark
this point for beg of smocking.
Work
14 rnds even, 1 sc in next st.

Turn
hat wrong side out.
SMOCKING:

row: With strand of CC beg at center
back on 1st of the 14 even rnds, * embroider over next st on this
rnd & the corresponding st 4 rnds below [5th even rnd]; rep
twice over the same sts; with thread on wrong side of hat, sk 9 sts *; rep bet
*’s around.
2nd
row: Sk 4 sts of 5th even
rnd, rep bet *’s of last row around.
3rd
row: Work as for 1st row,
work st on 9th & 13th row together.
NOTE:
To
make this hat extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a
matching color.
