1940s Stylish Hat & Handbag Set #281

Quick & easy to create, this stylish hat with matching purse will become a season favorite!

MATERIALS: 
BAG: 
3 spools Mary Lamb Brocade [B]
½ skein Mary Lamb Knitting Worsted [W]
1 Lining # 657
HAT: 
2 spools Mary Lamb Brocade
½ skein Mary Lamb Knitting Worsted
#4 Crochet Hook

BAG: 
With B, ch 29 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each ch * ch 1 turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each st, 2 sc in last st, ch 1 turn, 1 sc in each st, rep from * until there are 38 sts. 

Work 5 rows even, dec 1 st at beg & end of every other row until there are 28 sts.  End off. 

Make another piece same.

GUSSET: 
In W, ch 11 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in next 10 sts * ch 1 turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each st, 2 sc in last st, ch 1 turn, 1 sc in each st, rep from * until there are 18 sc. 

Work even until piece fits center piece, dec 1 st each side every other row until there are 10 sc.

When piece fits around 3 sides of bag, dec 1 st each side every other row until there are 8 sc. 

Work on these 8 sts for 78 rows. 

With gusset facing you, join with sc to center piece.

RUFFLE: 
With W, pick up only back loop, 1 sc in each st around 3 sides.

NEXT ROW:  * 1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, rep from * around.

NEXT 4 ROWS:  1 Sc st for st, join B. 

Work 2 rows of sc st for st. 

Sew Handle to one side of bag. 

Insert Lining.

HAT: 
Ch 3, join, 6 sc in ring, 2 sc in each st.

1ST RND:  * 1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, rep from * 5 more times.

2ND RND:  * 1 Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep from * 5 more times.

3RD RND:  * 1 Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep from * 5 more times. 

Cont to work in above manner, having 1 st more bet incs every rnd until there are 100 sc & circle measures 8“.

NEXT RND:  Inc every 5th st over ½  of hat, on front 57 sts, work long & short rows, work back on these 57 sts, work long & short rows, work back & forth on these 57 sts, join with sl st into next st, turn, sk sl st, 1 sc in next 60 sts, join with sl st, turn. 

Cont to work in above manner, pick up 3 more sts at each end of short row until 8 rows in all have been made. 

Put marker in center back of hat, work to marker, join with sl st * ch 1 turn, 1 sc into each st to marker, join with sl st into sc of prev rnd, rep from * once more.

TRIM” 
In B, ch 14 sts, work 6 rows of sc, inc in every st for 1 row.  Join W. 

Inc 1 st every other st for next 3 rows.  End off. 

Roll brim back, having 1” of B as shown in photo. 

Sew trim to hat to suit your taste.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
