1940s Classic Hat & Handbag Set #280

Quick & easy to create, this classic duo will become a season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS: 
BAG: 
1 - 1 lb spool Mary Lamb Corde, or 6 -75 yd spools
1 Lining #652
1 Handle
#5 Crochet Hook
HAT:  
1 ½ skeins Mary Lamb Knitting Worsted 

FRENCH KNOT STITCH: 
To make a French Knot, insert hook in next st, bring loop thru, holding back 1 loop on hook [tightly] with other loop ch 5 [loosely] drawing 5th ch thru both loops.

FRONT OF BAG: 
Ch 16 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each ch * ch 1 turn, 1 sc in each st, ch 1 turn.

NEXT ROW:  * 2 Sc in first st, 1 sc in each st, 2 sc in last st, rep from * until there are 27 sts.

When there are 37 rows, end off.

OVERLAP OF BAG: 
Work same as front of bag until 56 rows have been made. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row until there are 15 sts.  End off.

GUSSET: 
Ch 12, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each st, * ch 1 turn.  1 Sc in each st, ch 1 turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each st, 2 sc in last st, rep from * until there are 25 sts. 

Work on these sts for 62 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row until 15 sts rem.  End off.

Work 1 row of sc around front part of bag, skipping enough to keep work flat.

NEXT RND:  Work French Knots.

NEXT RND:  1 Row of sc.

NEXT RND:  Work French Knots.

NEXT RND:  1 Row of sc.

Finish other side of bag in same manner.

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

COVER FOR BUTTON: 
Ch 3, join, 6 sc in ring, 2 sc in each st.  Inc enough to keep work flat until piece fits button. 

Make 2 rows even. 

Now working over button, sk every other st until button is comp covered. 

Sew to bag before inserting lining. 

LOOP FOR BUTTON: 
Ch 29 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each st. 

Sew loop to bag before inserting lining.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

TABS FOR HANDLE: 
Ch 16 sts, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each st, ch 1 turn, 1 sc in each st. 

Make another tab. 

Sew to top of bag as shown in photo. 

Join gusset to bag with sc with right side facing you, leaving 30 rows for overlap.

HAT: 
Ch 3, join, put 6 sc in ring, 2 sc in each st.  Work French Knot st in every st.

NEXT ROW:  * Work 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in each st, rep from * 5 more times.  Work French Knot st in every st.  * Work 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep from * 5 more times. 

Work 1 rnd of French Knot st.

Cont to work in this manner having 6 more sts in every sc row & 6 more French Knot sts every other row until piece measures 9 ½”. 

Work 4 rows even.

START LONG & SHORT ROWS: 
Work 35 sts, follow patt, join with sl st. 

Work back on these 35 sts, pick up 3 sts more each side until 6 rows have been made. 

Work on all sts for 4 more rows. 

Dec on 1 row to 84 sts. 

Work incs for 5 rows.

Drape hat to suit individual taste.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
