1940’s Elegant Curlicue Hat #313

Materials:
  
American Thread Company “Dawn” Permanent “Crimp Set” Nylon Art. #N6, 4 balls
#6/H Crochet Hook

Important Note:  This hat is worked with 3 strands of yarn throughout & all rnds are worked doubly as follows:  work a rnd as directed, then work same rnd over it.

Crown: 
Ch 11, 3 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each rem st of ch working 3 sc in last st of ch, working on opposite of ch, 1 sc in each st, do not join rnds.

2nd rnd:  Work in sc working base of each st all around. 

All even rnds are worked in same manner & will not be referred to again. 

3rd rnd:  1 Sc in each sc on sides & 2 sc in each of the 3 sc at each end.

5th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc on sides & 2 sc in each of the 6 sc at each end.

7th rnd:  * 1 Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * 5 times, 1 sc in each sc to next 2 sc group, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * 5 times, 1 sc in each remaining sc [52 sc].

Working even in sc work 10 more double rnds, break yarn.

Brim: 
Ch 46, # sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each rem st of ch, 3 sc in last st of ch, working on other side of ch, 1 sc in each st.

2nd rnd:  Same as 2nd rnd of crown. 

All even rnds are worked in same manner.

3rd rnd:  Sc in next sc, 3 sc in center in center sc of 3 sc group, 1 sc in each sc to next 3 sc group at opposite end, sc in next sc, 3 sc in center sc of group, 1 sc in each of the next 20 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * twice, 1 sc in each rem sc.

5th rnd:  3 Sc in center sc at each end, 1 sc in each rem sc.

6th rnd:  Same as 2nd rnd. 

The increased part is at top of brim.

Finishing: 
Starting at beg of last rnd of hat, attach lower edge of brim to lower edge of hat working 1 sc in each of the next 25 sc, break yarn leaving an end & sew rem of brim as desired, twisting end as illustrated.
