Free Pattern - 1940’s Beaded Snood & Purse #306

1940’s Beaded Snood & Purse #306
 
Materials:  
J & P Coats or Clarks ONT Pearl cotton, Size 5, 7 balls for Purse, 6 balls for Snood
#2 Bone Crochet Hook                              
Pearl Beads 
12” Round Elastic                                       
8” Zipper
Plastic Ring, 1 ½” diameter                       
1/3 yd each Buckram & Felt or Lining Material

Use double thread throughout.
Gauge
1 shell & 1 sc = 1 ¼”

Purse: 
Bag Piece: 
Start at bottom, ch 34 very loosely to meas 11”. 

1st row:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, * sk next ch, 5 dc in next ch [shell made], sk next ch, sc in next ch.  Rep from * across [8 shells with 9 sc bet].  Ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Sc in each sc & each dc across [49 sc].  Ch 3, turn.

3rd row:  2 Dc in 1st sc [half shell], * sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, sk 2 sc, shell in next sc.  Rep from * across, end with sk 2 sc, 3 dc in least sc [half shell].  Ch 1, turn.

4th row:  Sc in each dc & in each sc across, sc in top st of turning ch [49 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

5th row:  Sc in 1st sc, * sk 2 sc, shell in next sc, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn. 

The last 4 rows [2nd to 5th rows incl] constitute patt. 

Rep patt until piece meas 7”, end with the 4th row.  Break off. 

Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch at bottom, ch 1 & work another 7” to correspond.  Break off. 

Gusset [Make 2]: 
Start at center, ch 33 to meas 6 ½”. 

1st row:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; then , working along opposite side of starting ch, make sc in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2nd & 3rd rows:  Sc in each sc across, inc 3 sc evenly across end of piece.  Ch 1, turn.  At end of 3rd row, break off. 

Finishing
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Fold Bag Piece in half, pin Gussets bet side edges [curved ends at bottom], then fasten them in place by working sc thru both thicknesses around. 

Fold top edges of Gussets in half & fasten in same way to top edges of Bag Piece.  Then work sl st in each sc around.  Break off. 

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper.
 Note:  
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

Sew beads to sides as shown in photo, or in your own individual style.

Handle: 
Ch 6.  Join with sl st to form ring. 

1st rnd:  Sc in each ch around [6 sc]. 

Rep 1st rnd until piece meas 10”.  Break off. 

Slip end of this piece thru plastic rind & sew ends tog.

Zipper Pull: 
Ch 4. 

1st row:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in 2 ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2nd row:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn. 

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 1 ½”.  Break off. 

Fold one end of piece over plastic rind & sew close to ring. 

Sew other end to zipper pull.

Snood: 
Headband: 
Starting at back edge, ch 70 to meas 13 ½”. 

1st row:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each ch across [69 sc].  Ch 1, turn. 

2nd to 7th rows:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

8th row:  Same as 5th row of Purse.

9th, 10th & 11th rows:  Same as 2nd, 3rd & 4th rows of Purse.

12th to 15th rows:  Rep 8th to 11th rows once more. 

Now work sc evenly all around, hold center of back edge in to cup slightly.  Break off.

With wrong side facing, attach thread at one end of back edge, ch 18 to meas 4”.  Sl st in sc at other end.  Break off. 

With right side facing, attach thread to left front edge, sc in each sc across narrow edge to back edge, sc in each ch across, sc in each sc across other narrow edge to front edge [be sure to have 53 sc].  Ch 1, turn. 

Snood
1st row:  Sc in 1st sc, [ch 6, sk 3 sc, dc in next sc] 12 times; ch 6, sk 3, sc in last sc.  Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 5th rows:  Sc in 1st sc, * ch 6, dc in next dc.  Rep from * across.  Ch 12, turn.

6th & 7th rows:  Same as 2nd row, only making ch 7 instead of ch 6.

8th & 9th rows:  Same as 2nd row, only making ch 8 instead of ch 6.

10th row:  Same as 2nd row, only making ch 9 instead of ch 6.

11th & 12th rows:  Same as 8th & 9th rows.

13th & 14th rows:  Same as 6th & 7th rows.

15th to 20th rows:  Work same as before make 1 ch less in each sp on each row until there are ch-1 sps on 20th row [lower edge of Snood]. 

Finishing
Sew ends of elastic to front ends of Headband. 

Then work sc over elastic along side & lower edge of Snood.  Break off. 

Sew beads to Headband & Snood, as desired.
