1936 Stylish Bowed Hat #397

Quick & easy to create, this feminine hat will become a season-spanning favorite & you’ll be the best dressed lady on the block!

HEADSIZE:  21” - 22”
#4 Steel Crochet Hook
Using double thread, ch 3.

MATERIALS:
Clark’s ONT [8 balls], or J & P Coats Mercerized, Size 10 [6 balls]

CROWN:
1ST RND:  10 Hdc in 1st ch from hook, join with sl st to turning ch.  Ch 1.
With single thread, ch 25, turn.

2ND RND:  * Make 1 hdc in next hdc by inserting hook only in front loop of hdc, make 1 hdc in same hdc, this time inserting hook only in back loop [thus making 2 hdc in 1 st to inc[.  Rep from * around [20 hdc].  Join with sl st to ch-1.

3RD RND:  Work in patt straight as follows:  * 1 hdc in next half dc insert hook only in front loop of hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc inserting hook only in back loop of hdc, rep from * around, thus alternating sts in front & back loops.

4TH RND:  Same as 2nd rnd [40 hdc].  Join as before.

HEREAFTER, do not join rnds, but work around & around marking the end of rnds.

5TH, 6TH & 7TH RNDS:  Same as 3rd rnd.

8TH RND:  Inc in every other st.

9TH, 10TH & 11TH RNDS:  Work in patt straight.

12TH RND:  Work in patt, inc in every other hdc only.

13TH, 14TH & 15TH RNDS:  Work in patt straight.

16TH RND:  Same as 12th rnd.

17TH THRU 32ND RNDS”  Work in patt straight.

33RD RND:  Work in patt, inc in every 5th hdc only.

34TH THRU 39TH RNDS:  Work in patt straight.

HAT should now meas 11 ½” at lower edge [folded width].

If a larger or smaller head size is desired, inc or dec [to dec, work off 2 hdc tog as 1] as nec.

WHEN hat meas 8 ½’ deep, ch 3, turn & with inside of hat towards you, work 1 rnd of pc st as follows:  * 1 dc in next hdc [hereafter insert hook under 2 loops of hdc], 1 pc st in next hdc, ch 1, sk 1 hdc, rep from * around.  Join & fasten off.

BOW:

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across.  Ch 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each st.  Ch 2, turn.

REPEAT 2nd row until work measures 9”.

FOLD work in half, having 1st & last rows coming tog, & work 2 rows of sc across, to join ends.

This completes one half of Bow.

Make the other half the same.

FOLD a pleat at joined end of each bow & attach to hat as shown in photo.

The joined ends of bows are turned under when arranging pleat, & are placed proxy ½” apart, giving effect of drawn through slits in hat.

HAT may be draped as desired.

ENJOY!
