1936 Lovely Leaf Beret #407

Quick & easy to create, this becoming beret will become a seasonal favorite & you’ll be a well dressed lady in town or country!

HEADSIZE:
22”

MATERIALS:
Clark’s ONT Boucle [4 balls]
#3 Steel Crochet Hook
1 ¼  yds Millinery Wire

CROWN:
Beg at tip, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 1.

1ST RND:  7 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc [an inc], rep from * around.

4TH THRU 8TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc of prev rnd, make 7 incs in each rnd at equal intervals, do not place incs directly over incs of prev rnd.

9TH RND:  * Make 5-dc cluster in next sc, sk 1 sc, rep from * around [28 clusters].  Join last cluster to first cluster with sl st.

10TH RND:  Sc in each cluster & sc in each sp, make 10 incs at equal intervals.

11TH RND:  Same as 9th rnd [33 clusters].

12TH RND:  2 Sc in each cluster & 1 sc in each sp.

13TH THRU 26TH RNDS:  Work sc in each sc of prev rnd, inc when nec to keep work flat.

27TH RND:  Work rnd of clusters, same as 9th rnd, sk 2 sc [instead of 1 sc], & sometimes sk 1 sc, in order to have work lie flat.

28TH RND:  2 Sc in each cluster & 1 sc in each sp.

This completes top of Crown.  Do not break off, but cont with side of Crown as follows:

29TH RND:  Same as 27th rnd.

30TH RND:  2 Sc in each cluster.

Hereafter work in sc only.  Work sc in each sc for 1 ½”.

NEXT RND:  Dec every 15th sc [to dec, insert hook in 14th sc, draw loop thru, insert hook in 15th sc, draw loop thru, thread over & draw thru all 3 loops on hook].  Work straight [if smaller head size is desired, dec a few sts] until entire side Crown measures 2 ½”.  Fasten & break off.

Block hat with damp cloth & warm iron, stretch top to meas approx 9 ¾” diameter.

Then from inside of Crown, place wire bet top & side Crown [bet 2 rows of clusters].

From right side, work rnd of scs over this wire.

Fasten wire neatly by overlapping, & break off thread.

LEAF TRIMMING:
Ch 4, turn.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, then 2 sc across other side of foundation ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each sc [hereafter always pick up only back loop of scs of prev row], 3 sc at corner [where 3 sc were made in prev row], dec 1 sc at end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD THRU 9TH ROWS:  Rep 2nd row.

10TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row, dec 1 sc at beg [sk 1st sc] & 1 sc at end of row.

Rep 10th row until leaf meas 4” lengthwise thru center.

Then sl st across center of row [where incs are], then ch 35 [for stem].  Do not break off.
Place 9” wire over stem & along center of leaf.

Work sc in each ch of stem, work over wire so that it is completely covered, then cont with sc [still working over wire to stiffen leaf] at center of leaf, pick up center threads to point of leaf.

Fasten wire neatly at both ends by turning ends over.  Break thread.

Curve stem slightly & sew trimming on side Crown as in photo.

NOTE:
To make this beret extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a matching color.

Experimenting with fabrics & color combinations will make this your own original creation!

Your hat will be truly fascinating!

ENJOY!
