1936 Lovely Leaf Beret

Quick & easy to
create, this becoming beret will become a seasonal favorite & you’ll be a well dressed lady in town or country!
HEADSIZE:
22”
MATERIALS:
Clark’s
ONT Boucle [4 balls]

Steel Crochet Hook
1
¼ yds Millinery Wire
CROWN:
Beg
at tip, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.
Ch 1.
1ST
RND: 7 Sc in ring.
2ND
RND: 2 Sc in each sc.
3RD
RND: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc
[an inc], rep from * around.
4TH
THRU 8TH RNDS: Sc in each sc
of prev rnd, make 7 incs in each rnd at equal intervals, do not place incs
directly over incs of prev rnd.
9TH
RND: * Make 5-dc cluster in next sc, sk
1 sc, rep from * around [28 clusters].
Join last cluster to first cluster with sl st.
10TH
RND: Sc in each cluster & sc in each
sp, make 10 incs at equal intervals.
11TH
RND: Same as 9th rnd [33
clusters].
12TH
RND: 2 Sc in each cluster & 1 sc in
each sp.
13TH
THRU 26TH RNDS: Work sc in
each sc of prev rnd, inc when nec to keep work flat.
27TH
RND: Work rnd of clusters, same as 9th
rnd, sk 2 sc [instead of 1 sc], & sometimes sk 1 sc, in order to have work
lie flat.
28TH
RND: 2 Sc in each cluster & 1 sc in
each sp.
This
completes top of Crown. Do not break
off, but cont with side of Crown as follows:
29TH
RND: Same as 27th rnd.
30TH
RND: 2 Sc in each cluster.
Hereafter
work in sc only. Work sc in each sc for
1 ½”.
NEXT
RND: Dec every 15th sc [to
dec, insert hook in 14th sc, draw loop thru, insert hook in 15th
sc, draw loop thru, thread over & draw thru all 3 loops on hook]. Work straight [if smaller head size is
desired, dec a few sts] until entire side Crown measures 2 ½”. Fasten & break off.
Block
hat with damp cloth & warm iron, stretch top to meas approx 9 ¾”
diameter.
Then
from inside of Crown, place wire bet top & side Crown [bet 2 rows of
clusters].
From
right side, work rnd of scs over this wire.
Fasten
wire neatly by overlapping, & break off thread.
LEAF
TRIMMING:
Ch
4, turn.
1ST
ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hook,
sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, then 2 sc across other side of foundation
ch. Ch 1, turn.
2ND
ROW: Sc in each sc [hereafter always
pick up only back loop of scs of prev row], 3 sc at corner [where 3 sc were
made in prev row], dec 1 sc at end of row.
Ch 1, turn.
3RD
THRU 9TH ROWS: Rep 2nd
row.
10TH
ROW: Same as 2nd row, dec 1
sc at beg [sk 1st sc] & 1 sc at end of row.
Rep
10th row until leaf meas 4” lengthwise thru center.
Then
sl st across center of row [where incs are], then ch 35 [for stem]. Do not break off.
Place
9” wire over stem & along center of leaf.
Work
sc in each ch of stem, work over wire so that it is completely covered, then
cont with sc [still working over wire to stiffen leaf] at center of leaf, pick
up center threads to point of leaf.
Fasten
wire neatly at both ends by turning ends over.
Break thread.
Curve
stem slightly & sew trimming on side Crown as in photo.
NOTE:
To
make this beret extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a
matching color.
Experimenting
with fabrics & color combinations will make this your own original
creation!
