Vintage 1936 Lovely Lace Gloves #404


Quick & easy to create in a lace shell pattern, these becoming gloves will become seasonal favorites & you’ll be the most elegantly dressed lady in the town!

MATERIALS: 
Clark’s ONT [5 balls], or J & P Coats [3 balls] Mercerized Crochet, Size 50
#8 or #9 Steel Crochet Hook
Small Buttons

LEFT HAND: 
Beg at wrist, ch 82 to meas 6”, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 7th ch from hook, ch 3, sk 2 ch, dc in next, ch 3, sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next, * ch 3, sk 2 ch, sc in next, ch 5, sk 2 ch, sc in next, ch 3, sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next, rep from * until 8 groups of 5 dc are made.  Ch 3, sk 2 ch, dc in next, ch 3, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 6, turn.

2ND ROW:  Tr in next dc, ch 3, * tr in each of next 5 dc with ch-1 bet trs, ch 4, sc under ch-5 loop, ch 4, rep from * across.  After last group of 5-tr, ch 3, sk next dc, tr in next sp, ch 2, tr in last sp, ch 6, turn.

3RD ROW:  Tr in tr, ch 2, * tr in each of next 5 tr with ch-2 bet trs.  Rep from * across omit ch-2 bet groups of tr, have the last tr of one groups & first tr of next group come tog.  After last group of 5-tr, ch 2, tr in next tr, ch 2, sk 2 ch, tr in next ch.  Ch 5, turn.

4TH ROW:  Dc in next tr, ch 2, dc in next tr, ch 3, * sk next tr, 5 dc in next tr [center tr of 5-tr group], ch 3, sk next tr, sc in next sp, ch 6, sk 2 tr [which come tog], sc in next sp, ch 3, rep from * across, end to correspond with beg of row.  Ch 6, turn.

5TH THRU 9TH ROWS:  Rep 2nd, 3rd & 4th rows.  Then rep again 2nd & 3rd rows.  At end of last row, join with sl st to beg of row [closes up opening], hereafter work in rnds.

10TH RND:  Sl st to 1st tr, ch 5, sk next sp, dc in next sp, ch 3, sk next tr, 5 dc in next tr, ch 3, sk next tr, sc in next sp, & work across as in 4th row until last group of 5-dc is made, ch 3, sk next tr, sc in next sp, ch 5, sk 1 sp, sc in next sp, ch 3, 5 dc at joining point, ch 3, sc in next sp.

11TH RND:  Ch 4, & work in patt as before thru to 18th rnd.  End & beg each rnd in such manner that shell patts come directly over shell patts of prev row.

SHAPING FOR THUMB: 
Try on glove with opening at center of palm of hand. 

Place safety pin on palm & back of hand separating thumb from hand [thumb to be worked later].

19TH & FOLLOWING RNDS:  Attach thread in sp at pin on palm side, ch 10, sc in sp at pin at back of hand, & work in patt around.  Start 2   5-dc shells over ch-10 [8 groups of shells in all]. 

Work in patt around & around hand part of glove over 8 shells, until when tried on it reaches to base of fingers.

FINGERS: 
Put glove on & mark fingers by putting safety pin on palm & back of hand bet each finger.

FOREFINGER: 
Attach thread to sp at pin on palm side bet forefinger & middle finger.

Work in patt across to same pin on back of hand, ch 3, cross over to palm side, sc in sp at pin, & cont patt in spiral until desired length. 

It is better not to have the fingers too long. 

Draw tip tog by making 2 rnds of sc.  Break off.

MIDDLE FINGER: 
Attach thread to sp at pin on palm side bet ring finger & middle finger, work patt across finger & around, over 3-ch & back of hand to same pin, ch 3, cross over to palm side, work in spiral & complete as for forefinger.

RING & LITTLE FINGERS: 
Same as forefinger & middle finger.

THUMB: 
Attach thread to sp at palm side of hand & work as for forefinger.

GAUNTLET: 
1ST RND:  Attach thread at opening point on foundation ch at wrist.  Ch 3, sk 1 sp & dc, * 5 dc in next ch st, ch 3, sk next 5-dc shell, sc in next loop.  Ch 5, sk sc, sc in next loop.  Ch 3,.sk next sc, rep from * sp work so that 11 5-dc groups are made, then ch 3, sc in 1st st of ch-3 first made.

2ND RND:  Ch 5, * tr in each of next 5-dc with ch-1 bet each tr, ch 4, sc in ch-5 loop, ch 4, tr from * around.  After last tr, ch 4, sc under ch-5 loop.

3RD RND:  Ch 5, * tr in each of next 5-tr with ch-2 bet trs, rep from * around omit ch-2 bet groups of trs [have last tr of one group & first tr of next group come tog].  After last tr, ch 2, sk next loop, dc in next loop.

4TH RND:  Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 4, sk next tr, 5 dc in next tr, * ch 4, sc in next tr, ch 5, sc in next tr [hereafter 2 trs coming tog are counted as 1 tr].  Ch 4, 5 dc in next tr, rep from * around end with sc under ch-5 loop, sc under next loop.

5TH THRU 17TH RNDS:  Rep 2nd, 3rd & 4th rnds. 

Finish opening with 1 row of sc with 2 ch-loops on one side of opening for buttons. 

Sew buttons on opposite side to match loops.

RIGHT HAND: 
Make same as for Left Hand, only be careful that fingers are made to match with right hand.
