1936 Chic Chinese Hat #395

Quick & easy to create, this feminine hat will become a season-spanning favorite
& you’ll be the best dressed lady on the block!

HEADSIZE:  22”

MATERIALS:
Clark’s ONT [10 balls],
OR
J & P Coats Mercerized, Size 10 [7 balls] Main Color [MC] & [1 ball] Contrast Color [CC]
#3 Steel Crochet Hook

MC is used double throughout.

HAT:
Start at tip with MC, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 1.

1ST RND:  5 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st.

3RD RND:  * 1 Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next [an inc], rep from * around.

4TH THRU 47TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc, make incs over incs of prev rnd [5 incs to each rnd].

48TH THRU 65TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc, make 5 decs to each rnd, do not dec directly over decs of prev rnd [to dec, draw loop thru next st, then draw loop thru next st, then yo & draw thru all 3 loops on hook], ch 1, turn.

THIS completes Crown & Under Brim.

The next 18 rows are worked back & forth to make back of hat fit the head.

1ST ROW:  Work sc over 4/5 of rnd, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk 1 st, dec next st, sc in each sc to within 5 sc from end, make 2 incs at reg intervals.  Then sk 1 sc, draw loop thru each of next 3 sc, & work off loops two at a time.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD THRU 18TH ROWS:  Same as 2nd row, do not make incs directly over incs of prev row.

AFTER 18TH ROW do not turn, cont down slope [of last 18 rows] as follows:
Work 32 sc along slope, sc in each sc of sts left free after the 65th rnd, 32 sc along other slope.

Work 8 more rnds of sc, dec as nec to fit head size.

CREASE Brim at 47th rnd, then hold hat so that tip is towards you, work rnd of sl sts as follows:

Attach CC to one inc point in 46th rnd & work 1 sl st in each st, insert hook thru 46th & 48th rnds, thus joining two thicknesses firmly tog.  Fasten neatly & break off.

SKIP 2 ridges of sc, & work rnd of sl sts as before.  Fasten neatly & break off.

WORK 6 more rnds of CC sl sts.

These rows of sl sts double the thickness of brim & make it stiffer.

ENJOY!
