Vintage 1945 Open Back Bonnet #123

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Strawlite Art. 47, 2 tubes.
Steel crochet hook #0.
2 ½ yards moirĂ© ribbon, 3” wide
¼ yard grosgrain ribbon, ½” wide.

HAT:
Make a 3” chain.

1st Row:  Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

2nd Row:  Dc at base of ch 3 [thus increasing/inc], work dc in back loop only of each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

3rd Row:  Work sc through both loops of each dc and in top of ch 3.  Ch 3, turn.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows, thus inc 1 st at beg of each dc row, until piece measures 6”, end with an sc row.

Next Row:  Inc as before, work to 14 sts from end of row, work 2 hdc, 2 sc [tightly], 2 hdc & 8 dc.  Ch 1, turn.  [Dent for shaping of brim started].

Following Row:  Same as 3rd row.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times.

Work even [no incs], still shaping dent as before until piece measures 12” along dent, ending with an sc row.

Next Row:  Ch 3, work 2 dc off as 1 [thus decreasing/dec], finish row as before.

Following Row:  Same as 3rd row.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times, then dec [instead of inc] at top edge, repeat 2nd and 3rd rows for 6” [or until number of sts is same as 1st row], ending with sc row. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew narrow ribbon along inside of dent to retain shape.

Roll top edge as illustrated, & tack in place.

Cut wide ribbon into 2 pieces.

Sew one end of both pieces inside of hat to form crown.

Make a large bustle bow with streamers hanging down back.

Tack bow in place.

ENJOY!
