Vintage 1945 Open Back
Bonnet #123
MATERIALS:
Hiawatha
Strawlite Art. 47, 2 tubes.
Steel crochet hook #0.
2 ½ yards moirĂ© ribbon, 3” wide
¼ yard grosgrain ribbon, ½” wide.
Steel crochet hook #0.
2 ½ yards moirĂ© ribbon, 3” wide
¼ yard grosgrain ribbon, ½” wide.
HAT:
Make
a 3” chain.
1st
Row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn.
2nd
Row: Dc at base of ch 3 [thus
increasing/inc], work dc in back loop only of each st across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd
Row: Work sc through both loops of each dc
and in top of ch 3. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat
2nd and 3rd rows, thus inc 1 st at beg of each dc row,
until piece measures 6”, end with an sc row.
Next
Row: Inc as before, work to 14 sts from end
of row, work 2 hdc, 2 sc [tightly], 2 hdc & 8 dc. Ch 1, turn.
[Dent for shaping of brim started].
Following
Row: Same as 3rd row.
Repeat
last 2 rows 3 more times.
Work
even [no incs], still shaping dent as before until piece measures 12” along
dent, ending with an sc row.
Next
Row: Ch 3, work 2 dc off as 1 [thus
decreasing/dec], finish row as before.
Following
Row: Same as 3rd row.
Repeat
last 2 rows 3 more times, then dec [instead of inc] at top edge, repeat 2nd
and 3rd rows for 6” [or until number of sts is same as 1st
row], ending with sc row. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Sew
narrow ribbon along
inside of dent to retain shape.
Roll
top edge as illustrated, & tack in place.
Cut
wide ribbon into 2 pieces.
Sew
one end of both pieces inside of hat to form crown.
Make
a large bustle bow with streamers hanging down back.
Tack
bow in place.
