Vintage 1970s Mod Mini Safari Jacket & Cap #1361
Mohair jacket on safari lines has pocket-top tabs forming belt casing. lt's a long, lean classic, easy to knit in stocking-stitch. The jacket has a matching crochet cap.

MATERIALS:
JACKET:
18 (19, 21, 22, 24) Balls Villawool Trianon
1 Pair Each #6 & #7 Aero Knitting Needles
1 Aero Crochet Hook #10
9 Buttons
Leather Belt
CAP:
4 balls Villawool Superknit 12-piy Crepe
1 Aero crochet hook #6 
MEASUREMENTS:
JACKET:
Bust = 32” (34”, 36”, 38”, 40”)
Length = 29¾” (30”, 30¼”, 30½”, 31”)
Sleeves = 16” (ALL SIZES)
CAP:
Average head

TENSION:
5 Sts = 1”

BACK:
With #7 needles, cast on using "thumb" method 87 (92, 97, 102, 107) sts, beg with p row & work 6 rows st st. *

NEXT ROW: Knit (fold of hem). 

Beg with a k row, work 6 rows st st

Change to #6 needles & cont in st st until 22” (or length needed) from fold of hem, end p row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Cast off at beg of next & every row 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) sts twice, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts twice.

Dec 1 st each end of next & every 2nd row to 63 (66, 69, 72, 75) sts.

Cont until armholes are 7 ¼” (7 ½”, 7 ¾”, 8”, 8 ¼”) on straight ending on p row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Cast off at beg of next & every row 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts twice, 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) sts twice, 6 (7, 7, 7, 8) sts twice. Cast off rem sts.

LEFT FRONT:
With #7 needles, cast on using "thumb" method 39 ( 42, 45, 48, 51) sts & work as back to *, then cast on 19 sts.

NEXT ROW: K (fold of hem).

NEXT ROW: K to last 20 sts, p 1, k 9, sl. 1 purlwise, k 9 (front edge).

NEXT ROW: P 19, k 1, p to end.

Rep last 2 rows twice more.

Change to #6 needles & cont st st until work meas same as back to armhole, end at side edge.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Cast off at beg of next & foll 2nd row 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) sts once, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts once, then dec 1 st at armhole edge on every 2nd row 2 (3, 2, 3, 3) times.

Cont on rem 46 (48, 50, 52, 54) sts until armhole meas 4 ½” (4 ¾”, 5”, 5 ¼”, 5 ½”) on straight, end at front edge.

SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROW: P 19, k 1 & sl these 20 sts onto holder, cast off next 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts, p to end.

Knit 1 row, then cast off at neck edge 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts & p to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next & every 2nd row until 18 (19, 20, 21, 22) sts rem.

Cont until armhole meas same as back, end at armhole edge.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Cast off at beg of next & each alt row 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts once, 6 (6, 7, 7, 7,) sts once. Cast off.

MARK OFF 9 BUTTON POSITIONS ON FRONT BAND: 1st  7 rows above fold of hem, 9th on last row of front border, & evenly sp 7 others bet.

MAKE DOUBLE BUTTONHOLE:
With RS of work facing k 3, cast off 3, k 3, sl 1 purlwise, k 3, cast off 3, k 3, p 1, k to end.

NEXT ROW: P to last 20 sts, k 1, p 3, cast on 3 sts, p 7, cast on 3 sts, p 3.

RIGHT FRONT:
With #7 needles, cast on using "thumb" method 39 ( 42, 45, 48, 51) sts & work as back to *.

NEXT ROW: K for fold of hem, then cast on 19 sts (front edge).

NEXT ROW: K 9, sl 1 purlwise, k 9, p 1, k to end.

NEXT ROW: P to last 20 sts, k 1, p 19.

Rep last 2 rows twice more.

Change to #6 needles & work 1st buttonhole on next row, then cont as other side making buttonholes opp markers, & cast off for 9th buttonhole on last row of front border.

SLEEVES:
With #7 needles, cast on using "thumb" method 40 (40, 43, 43, 46) sts & work as back to *.

NEXT ROW: K for fold of hem.

Beg with k row, work 6 rows st st, then change to #6 needles & cont until 12 rows from fold of hem.

Inc 1 st each end of next & every 6th row thereafter until 60 (60, 65, 65, 70) sts

Cont until sleeves meas 16” from fold of hem (or length needed), end on p row.

Cast off at beg of next & every row 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) sts twice, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts twice. 

Dec 1 st each, end of next & every row 5 (3, 5, 3, 5) times, then every 2nd row until 12 (12, 13, 13, 14) sts rem.

Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) sts once. 

LEFT POCKET:
With #6 needles cast on 24 sts. 

1ST ROW: P to end & inc 1 in last st, then cast on 2 sts. 
2ND ROW: K & inc 1 in last st, then cast on 2 sts.
3RD ROW: P & inc 1 in last st.
4TH ROW: K & inc 1 in last st: 32 sts. 
Cont in st st until 6” from beg (meas in centre) * end p row. 
NEXT ROW: Sl 1st st then cast off 3 sts, k to end. 
NEXT ROW: P to last 2 sts, p 2 tog. 
Rep last 2 rows until 13 sts rem.
P 1 row.
K 2 tog at beg of next & every 2nd row until 10 sts rem.
Mark end of this row & work 21 rows st st on these 10 sts for belt lp. Cast off. 
RIGHT POCKET:
Work as left pocket to * end on k row, then finish to corres with left pocket, beg shaping on p row.
Press work on WS.
Use small back st sew up shoulders, press seams. 
NECKBAND:
With RS facing sl sts from holder of right front to #7 needles, join in yarn & neatly pick up & k 19 (21, 23, 25, 27) sts on side of neck, 27 ( 28, 29, 30, 31) sts on back neck, 19 (21, 23, 25, 27) sts on side of neck, p 1, k 9, sl 1 purlwise, k 9 from holder. 
NEXT ROW: P 19, k 1, p to last 20 sts, k 1, p 3, cast on 3 sts, p 7, cast on 3 sts, p 3. (9th buttonhole compl).
NEXT ROW: K 9, sl 1 purlwise, k 9, p 1, k to last 20 sts, p 1, k 9, sl 1 purlwise, k 9.
NEXT ROW: P 19, k 1, p to last 20 sts, k 1, p 19. 
Cont until 5 rows have been worked. 
NEXT ROW: Cast off 19 sts, p to end for fold of hem.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 19 sts, p to end.
Beg with k row, work 3 rows st st. Cast off. 
Neatly top sew ends of front bands, then fold bands at sl st over to wrong side & sew down.
Sew double buttonhole edges tog.
Sew up side & sleeve seams & press seams open.
Set sleeves smoothly into armholes.
Turn up all hems & sl st.
Work 1 row DC on pockets, omit cast off edge of belt loop.
Use small back st just inside line of crochet, sew on pockets.
Turn top of belt loop under ½”, back st in place.
Sew on buttons. 
CAP:
ABBREVIATION: CL = cluster worked as follows:
Yoh, insert hk in row below, draw up lp ½” long) 3 times, yoh & draw thru all lps.
NOTE: Work CLs into 2 back lps of CH. 
Beg at crown, make 4 CH, join with sl st.
1ST RND: 3 CH, 11 TR in circle, sl st to 3rd CH of the 3 CH. 
2ND RND: 3 CH, 1 TR in same place as sl st, 2 TR in each TR to end, sl st to 3rd CH of 3 CH: 24 TR. 
3RD RND: Draw up lp 1” long, (yoh, insert hk in same place as sl st & draw up another lp) twice, yoh & draw thru all lps (1st CL made), 3 CH, (1 CL in next TR, 3 CH, sk 1 TR), rep to end, sl st to top of 1st CL: 24 CLS. 
4TH RND: 1 CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH, (sk 1 CL, 1 CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH), rep to end, sl st in top of 1st CL: 24 CLS. 
5TH RND: * 1 CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH, 1 CL in 3rd CH, 3 CH, sk 1 DC, ( 1 CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH, sk 1 CL) twice, rep from * to end, sl st in top of 1st CL: 32 CLS. 
6TH RND: * 1 CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH, 1 CL in 3rd CH, 3 CH, sk 1 CL, ( I CL in 2nd CH, 3 CH, sk 1 CL) 3 times, rep  from * to end, sl st in top of 1st CL: 40 CLS. 
7TH RND: Rep 4th work over 40 CLS. 
8TH RND: Rep 4th but work only 2 CH bet CLS.
9TH RND: Rep 8th but work only 1 CH bet CLS.
10TH RND: * 1 CL in CH, 1 CH, sk 1 CL, rep from * to end, sl st in top of 1st CL. 
11TH RND: 2 CH, 1 DC in each CH & top of CL to end, sl st to 2 CH.
12TH RND: 2 CH, 1 DC in each DC to end.
Rep 12th rnd twice more & fasten off.
Make pompon, sew to top.
