Vintage 1965 Red Riding Hood
Jacket #1372
Red-Riding Hood is knitted in synthetic yarn with a shimmering
finish. Wear it anywhere outdoors, & indoors, too, for apres ski parties.
MATERIALS:
26 (28, 30) Balls Panda Gossamer Nylon
1 Pair #6 Knitting Needles
#6 Steel Crochet Hook
5 Press-Studs
MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 34” (36”, 38”)
Length from Shoulder = 19” (all sizes)
TENSION:
6 Patts & 18 Rows = 2”
SPECIAL Abbreviation:
PUK = pick up lp bet needles & k into back of it
BACK:
Use #6 needles & double yarn (double yarn should be
used thru-out), cast on 121 (125, 129) sts & k 1 row.
1ST ROW (WS): K 1, * yf, sl 1, yo, k 1, rep
from * to end.
2ND ROW: K 1, * k next st tog with yo thru
back of lps, k 1, rep from * to end.
NOTE: When shaping work, yo & sl-st beneath it should be
counted as 1 st.
Rep 2 patt rows until work meas 3”, end on 2nd patt
row **.
Work 5 rows more.
Then inc 1 st each end on next 7 rows & 1 st
each end on next 3 alt rows.
Work 1 row without shaping.
SHAPE SLEEVES:
Cast on 26 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Work 4 rows without shaping on 193 (197, 201) sts,
end on 1st patt row.
Inc 1 st each end on next & every foll 5th row
to 215 (219, 223) sts, have last inc on 2nd patt row.
Work 9 rows without shaping.
SHAPE UPPER SLEEVE SEAMS:
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 10 rows & 2 sts at beg of
every row to 61 (65, 69) sts.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 14 (16, 18) sts for shoulder, patt
to end.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 14 (16, 18) sts, leave rem 33 (35,
37) sts on st-holder.
LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 65 (69, 73) sts & k 1 row.
Rep 2 patt rows 3 times.
Cast on 12 sts at beg of next row for front facing.
Work in patt on 77 (81, 85) sts until work meas 3”, end
on 2nd patt row.
Work 5 rows more, end at side edge, then inc 1 st at
side edge on next 7 rows & 1 st on next 3 alt rows.
Work 1 row without shaping.
Cast on 26 sts at beg of next row for sleeve & work
in patt to end.
Work 5 rows on 113 (117, 121) sts, end at sleeve edge,
then inc 1 st at sleeve edge on next & every foll 5th row to 124
(128, 132) sts, have last inc on 2nd patt row.
Work 9 rows without shaping.
SHAPE UPPER SLEEVE:
Cast off 3 sts at sleeve edge on next & alt rows 5
times all tog & 2 sts on every foll alt row to 73 (77, 81) sts, end at front edge.
At beg of next row cast off 22 sts for neck, work to
end.
Work 1 row & cast off 2 sts at sleeve edge.
NEXT ROW: Patt 11 (13, 15) sts, (yf, sl 1, puk)
twice, thus inc 2 sts, patt to end.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 2 sts, work to end.
NEXT ROW: Patt.

Cast off 14 (16, 18) sts at beg of next row for
shoulder, patt to end & leave rem 23 (25, 27) sts on st-holder.
RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 55 (59, 63) sts & work as back to **.
Work 6 rows more, end at sleeve edge.
Then inc 1 st at sleeve edge on next 7 rows & 1 st on
next 3 alt rows.
Work 1 row.
At beg of next row cast on 26 sts for sleeve, work to
end.
Work 5 rows on 91 (95, 99) sts, then inc 1 st at sleeve
edge on next & every foll 5th row to 102 (106, 110) sts, have last inc on 1st patt
row.
Work 9 rows without shaping.
SHAPE UPPER SLEEVE SEAM:
Cast off 3 sts at sleeve edge on next & alt rows 5 times
all tog & 2 sts on every foll alt row to 49 (53, 57) sts.
Work 1 row.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 2 sts, patt to last 14 (16, 18) sts, (yf, sl
1, puk) twice, patt to end.
NEXT ROW: Patt.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 2 sts, patt to end.
NEXT ROW: Patt.
Rep last 4 rows 5 times.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 14 (16, 18) sts for shoulder, leave rem 23
(25, 27) sts on st-holder.
HOOD:
Join upper sleeve & shoulder seams.
RS facing, transfer sts from right front, back & left
front to #6 needle.
WS facing, join yarn to neck edge of left front &
work 1st patt row across 22 (24, 26) sts, k 2 tog, patt 31 sts, k 2 tog, patt 22 (24, 26) sts.
Cont in patt on 77 (81, 85) sts for 10”.
SHAPE TOP:
Cast off 28 (28, 30) sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Work for 5” on rem 21 (25, 25) sts. Cast off.
SLEEVE FACINGS:
RS facing, join yarn at sleeve edge, pick up & k 80 sts
along cuff end of sleeve.
K next row to form ridge, then work 6 rows in st st.
Cast off loosely.
FINISHING:
Press with warm iron & damp cloth on WS of work.
Join side & sleeve seams.
Fold facings to WS & st in position.
Fold under 12 sts along left front edge & sl st in
place.
Join seams at top of hood.
CROCHET BORDER:
RS facing, join 4 strands of yarn to lower edge of left front
& use crochet hk * insert hk in next st, yo hk & draw lp thru, yo hk &
draw thru lp on hk, then pull up this lp to meas 2 ½”, remove hk & hold long lp firmly at back
of work, rep from * along lower edge up right front & around face edge of hood, finish at inner
end of cast-off neck edge.
Work lp every 4th row along right front edge & right
& left hood edge. Fasten off.
LP-TRIMMED FACINGS:
Use yarn double for lower edge of left front, cast on 60
(63, 66) sts.
Lp-st Row: * Insert needle in next st (take yo needle & around
4 fingers of left hand) twice, then over needle again & draw 3 lps thru on to
right-hand needle, let original st drop off left-hand needle in usual way, sl 3 lps on to
left-hand needle & k these tog thru back of lps, rep from * to end.
Work 6 rows in st st, beg with p row. Cast off loosely.
Work similar lp-trimmed facings for rem edges, but cast on 95
(97, 99) sts from lower edge of back, 42 (45, 48) sts for lower edge of right
front & 119 sts for hood.
For right front, cast on 64 sts & work lp-st row.
P 1 row.
NEXT ROW: Cast off 7 sts, k to end.
Work 4 rows more, cast off.
Set lps to outer edges with k side up.
St lp edges tog along lower edges, end ½” from right
front edge.
St facing cast-off edges in place.
St hood facing same way, beg at right front neck shaping
& end at left front cast-off neck edge.
For right front st 7 sts cast-off group at lower facing end.
Sew on press-studs.
