Vintage 1944 Trendy Handbag Tote #422

Quick & easy to create, this becoming tote purse will become a wardrobe favorite!

MATERIALS: 

Paragon Corde Art 135, 6 spools, or

Paragon Cordennet 3 ½ skeins or tubes

#1 Steel Crochet Hook

½ yd Lining Material

SIZE:  15” x 15”

STARTING AT THE BOTTOM:  

Ch 216 [loosely] ch should meas 33”, sl st in 1^st ch to form ring.

1^ST RND:  2 Sc in next ch, * 2 sc in 2^nd ch *, rep from * to * all around [2 sc in 2^nd ch count as 1 patt]--108 patts in rnd.

2^ND RND:  2 Sc in 1^st sc, * 2 sc in 2^nd sc *, rep from * to * to end of rnd always have 2 sc in 1^st sc of patt below, cont work 50 more rnds, work should now meas 7 ½”, sl st in next sc.  Do not break Corde.

OPEN STITCH PATTERN:

1^ST ROW:  Ch 4, dc in 2^nd sc, * ch 2, dc in next sc, dc in 3^rd sc *, rep from * to * 25 more times, ch 2, dc in next sc, dc in 2^nd sc, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 4, dc in 2^nd dc, * dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in next dc *, rep from * to * to end of row, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Ch 4, dc in 2^nd dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc, dc in next dc, * rep from * to * to end of row, turn.  

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd row until there are 24 rows total of Open St Patt [7 ½”].  Make other side of bag to match [open st patt].

TIE STRAP:  PATTERN STITCH:  

Ch 26, [loosely].

1^ST ROW:  * 2 Sc in 2^nd ch *, rep from * to * to end of row [13 patts], turn.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 1, * 2 sc in 2^nd sc *, rep from * to * to end of row [13 patts], turn.

3^RD TO 6^TH ROW:  Same as 2^nd row, turn.

7^TH ROW:  Ch 1, 1 sc in 2^nd sc, [1 dec] * 2 sc in 2^nd sc * , rep from * to * 10 more times, 1 sc in 2^nd sc [1 dec].

Dec 1 sc in both ends of every 7^th row.

Cont work until there rem only 5 patts in row.

Work even for 12 rows more.

Cont Strap starting with inc rows.

1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, sc in 1^st sc, [1 inc] 2 sc in next sc, * 2 sc in 2^nd sc *, rep from * to * 3 more times, 1 sc in same sc [1 inc] turn.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 1, sc in 1^st sc, * 2 sc in 2^nd sc *, rep from * to * 4 more times, sc in last sc, turn.  

Cont work, inc 1 sc in both ends of every 7^th row, until there are 13 patts in row, then work even for 6 more rows, fasten off, 18” [approx].

FINISHING:  

Sew bag tog at top & bottom.  

Cut lining for bag 30”x15”, add ½” on all sides.  

Cut piece 7”x8” for pocket, fold in half & sew to lining of bag.  

Sew lining tog to fit bag, insert & tack at bottom, turn under ¼” & sew to opening at each side of bag with small sl st, also sew few stitches across top end.  Insert Tie Strap & knot as shown in photo.
