Vintage 1940s Ridged Handbag #287

MATERIALS:           
6 tubes Corticelli Corde     
#13 Aero Crochet Hook     
3/4 yd - 42” Satin Lining    
½ yd Buckram                      
8” Zipper                               
Cotton Batting

GAUGE: 
5 sc = 1”

SIDE SECTIONS: 
Ch 34.

1ST ROW:  1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 31 ch, put in marker, 3 sc in last ch, put in marker.  Work around making 1 sc in next 32 sts, ch 1, turn.  Working in back loop of st, cont. 

2ND ROW:  Sc to marker, 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc to end, ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc to marker, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * to marker, sc to end, ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc to marker, * 1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * to marker, sc to end, ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  Sc to marker, * 2 sc in next sc, 3 sc; rep from * to marker, sc to end, ch 1, turn.

6TH ROW:  Sc to marker, * 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * to marker, sc to end, ch 1, turn.

Cont to inc approx 3 times between markers at different intervals, keep work flat until 20 rows are completed.

Fasten off.  Work other piece same. 

Press lightly on wrong side with damp cloth. 

Outline shape on brown paper.

GUSSET: 
Ch 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook & in rem 7 ch [8 sts], ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. 

Cont as 2nd row until long enough to fit around bag without stretching [approx 62 ridges]. 

Press & outline shape in brown paper.

ROLLS: 
Ch 14, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook & in rem 12 ch [13 sts], ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. 

Cont as 2nd row until piece is 14” longer than gusset. 

Press & outline shape on brown paper. 

Join by sl st last & first rows tog.  Fasten off. 

Make another piece same.

FINISHING: 
Make lining first. 

Cut 2 pieces buckram same size as side sections. 

Cut 4 pieces lining ½” larger than buckram & encase each piece of buckram in lining. 

Cut piece of buckram same size as gusset. 

Cut 2 pieces lining ½” larger than buckram & encase buckram in lining. 

Sew gusset to side sections. 

Line rolls with single lining & fold in half lengthwise. 

Work 1 row sc catching both sides tog, stuffing lightly with cotton batting as you go along.

TO COMPLETE BAG: 
Pin Gusset in place & crochet to side sections. 

Sew rolls to bag along each side of Gusset, leaving 14” free for handles. 

Work 1 row sc across top of bag & sew in zipper. 

Insert lining in bag & stitch to zipper.
