Mod 1960s Seattle Dreams Dress #1169
SIZE:
Directions are for Size 10. Changes for Sizes 12, 14 & 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva
Nantuk Sports Yarn 2 oz Skein:
Color A 9 (9, 10, 10), Color B 1 (1, 1, 1)
1 Pair Each Boye Knitting Needles #5 & #6
1 Crochet Hook # 0
1 Hiawatha Blunt-End Tapestry Needle

GAUGE:
On #6 needles before smocking:
11 sts = 2”
7 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Back of neck to hem = 35” (35¼”-35½”-35¾”)
Width across shoulders after smocking = 12½” (12¾” -13”-13¼”)
Width across back = 21” (21¼” -21¾”-22”)
Width across sleeve = 12½” (13”-13½”-14”)

NOTE:  For longer or shorter dress make adjustment before 1st dec row.
FRONT: 
With #5 needles & A - cast on 181(183-185-187).

1ST - 8TH ROWS: ** P 1 row & K 1 row for 8 rows. Mark each end of last row.

CHANGE TO #6 NEEDLES.

1ST ROW - RIGHT SIDE: P 3(4-5-6), K 1, * P 5, K 1, rep from * to last 3 (4-5-6) sts, P to end.

2ND ROW: K 3 (4-5-6), P 1, * K 5, P 1, rep from * to last 3 (4-5-6) sts, K to end.

3RD ROW: P.

4TH ROW: Rep 2nd Row.

5TH ROW: Rep 1st Row.

ROW 6: K. Rep last 6 rows to about 3¼” above markers, end with 5th Row.

DEC ROW: K 4 (5-6-7), * K 2 tog, K 10, rep from * across to last 9 (10-11-12) sts, K 2 tog, K to end.

Width across is 22½” (22¾”-23¼”-23½”).

ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: Careful to keep patt bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 117 (119-121-123) sts to 5” (5¼”-5½”-5¾”) above underarm, end with 1st or 4th Row.

NECK:
NEXT ROWS: Work across 31 (32-33-34) & sl them to holder, bind off center 55, work to end.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 31 (32-33-34) sts to 7” (7¼”-7½”-7¾”) above underarm.

SHOULDER:
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 16 (16-17-17) at armhole edge 1 (2-1-2) times.

ON SIZES 10 & 14 ONLY, bind off 15 (16) at same edge once.
Start at neck, work other side to corres.

BACK:
With #5 needles & A - cast on 169 (171-173-175).

NEXT ROWS: Work same as on front from ** to ** have 2 patts less.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in patt as on front on 115 (117-119-121) sts to same length as on front to underarm end on wrong side.

Width across is 21” (21¼” -21¾”-22”).

ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: Careful to keep patt bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 109 (111-113-115) sts to about 2” above underarm, end with 5th Row.

DEC ROW: K 1(2-3-4), * K 2 tog, K 2, rep from * to last 4(5-6-7) sts, K 2 tog, K 2(3-4-5).

NEXT ROWS: Work on 82 (84-86-88) sts, having 1 less st between "ridges," to 4” (4¼”-4½ ‘-4¾”) above underarm, end on right side.

DIVIDE FOR OPENING:
Work across 41 (42-43-44) & sl them to a holder, work to end.

NEXT ROWS: Change to #5 needles & work to 7” (7¼”-7½”-7¾”) above underarm.

SHOULDER:

Bind off 11 (11-11-12) sts at armhole edge 2 (1-1-2) times.

ON SIZES 12 & 14 ONLY bind off 12 sts at same edge once. Bind off.

Work other side to corres.

SLEEVES:
With #6 needles & A - cast on 65 (65-73-73).

Work in patt as follows:
1ST ROW: K 1, * P 3, K 1, rep from * across.

2ND ROW: P 1, * K 3, P 1, rep from * across.

3RD ROW: P.

4TH ROW: Rep 2nd Row.

5TH ROW: Rep 1st Row.

6TH ROW: K. Rep these 6 rows for patt, work to 5” (5”-6”-5”).

NEXT ROW: Work added sts in patt, inc 1 each side on next row.

ON SIZES 10 (12-16) ONLY, rep inc every 1” 1 (2-1) times more.

NEXT ROWS: All Sizes work on 69 (71-75-77) sts to 16½” or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across sleeve is 12½” (13”-13½”-14”).

SLEEVE CAP:
NEXT ROWS: Careful to keep patt bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT DEC ROWS: Dec 1 each side every other row until 45 (45-47-47) sts rem.

NEXT DEC ROWS: Dec 1 each side every row 4 times.

Bind off 3 at beg of next 8 rows. Bind off rem sts.

SMOCKING:
With tapestry needle & contrasting color - work from right to left on right side of work.

Start at left armhole about 1¾” (2”-2¼”-2½”) straight above underarm, bring needle up in P st in 3rd (3rd -2nd -2nd ) RIDGE from side edge, draw 3rd (3rd -2nd -2nd ) & 2nd (2nd -1st -1st ) RIDGES tog, work another overcast st in same place then bring up needle in P st of 5th (5th -4th -4th ) RIDGE & draw 5th (5th -4th -4th

RIDGES tog as before, cont in this way across.

Have rows of smocking about ½” apart.

Draw tog alt RIDGES on every other row of smocking, use P sts as guide.

Width across shoulders after smocking should be about 12½” (12¾” -13”-13¼”).

Work 3 rows of smocking on sleeves in same way about 1” above start.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulder seams.

With A - crochet 1 row of sc around neck, make buttonhole at back opening.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew sleeve & underarm seams.

Hem at markers & sew in place.
