Mod 1960s Philadelphia Dress #1162
SIZE:
Directions are for Size 10.
Changes for Sizes 12, 14, 16 & 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva Reflection 1 oz, 13 (14-14-15-16) skeins
1 Boye Circular Knitting Needle #5 – 24”
1 Crochet Hook #E

GAUGE:
6 sts to 1”
17 rows = 2”

MEASUREMENTS:
Length Lower Edge To Shoulder -  34¾” (35¼”-35¼”-35¾”-35¾”)
Width At Bustline - 34¾” (36”-37¾”-40”-41¾”)
Width Across Sleeve - 11” (11½”-12¼”-12¼”-13¼”)

SKIRT:
Cast on 352 (360-362-368-370). Join, be careful not to twist sts. 

MARK BEG OF ROWS.

NOTE:
Directions are for 34¾” (35¼”-35¼”-35¾”-35¾”) dress meas from lower edge to shoulder.

To lengthen or shorten make adjustment before 1st dec row.

K around in St St for 2”.

Place 4 dart markers as follows:

K 44(45-45-46-46), place marker, K 88(90-91-92-93), place marker, K 88(90-90-92-92), place marker, K 88(90-91-92-93), place marker, K 44(45-45-46-46).

Sl markers every row.

DEC ROW: * K to 4 sts before marker, K 2 tog thru back lps, K 4, K 2 tog thru front, rep from * 3 times more, K to end - 8 decs.

Rep dec at markers every 1¾” (1¾”-1¾”-1¾”-2”) 4 (4-4-6-5) times, every 1” 3 (3-4-1-1) times, then every ½” 14 (14-12-13-13) times.

Dress meas about 19” (19”-19”- 19½”- 19”) from start.

Work on 176 (184-194-200-210) sts to 22”.

INC ROW: * K to 3 sts before marker, inc 1 in next st, K 3, inc 1 in next st, rep from * 3 times more, K to end.

Rep incs every 6th row 3 (3-3-4-4) times more.

Remove dart markers.

Work on 208 (216-226-240-250) sts to 26” from start.

Width at bustline is 34¾” (36”-37¾”-40”-41¾”).

Be sure to start at beg of row, bind off 104 (108-113-120-125) sts for back, place a marker, bind off rem 104 (108-113-120-125) sts for front. Do not break yarn.

YOKE:
GAUGE: 5 shells = 3”; 3 rows = 1”

On right side, crochet 85 (91-94-100-103) sc to side marker - about 5 sc to 6 sts. Ch 3 to count as first dc, turn. Work in patt:

1ST ROW (WRONG SIDE): 1 Dc in 1st sc for half shell, * sk 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc for shell, rep from * across, end 2 dc in last sc for half shell, ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW: 1 Dc in sp bet 1st & 2nd dc, * 3 dc in sp bet 2nd & 3rd dc of next shell, rep from * across, end 2 dc bet last 2 dc.

There are 27 (29-30-32-33) shells with half shell at each side.

Width across is 17” (18”-18¾”-20”-20¾”). Do not ch, turn.

ARMHOLES:
Sl st across half shell & next 2 (2-2-5-5) dc, ch 3, 1 dc in sp before next dc for half shell, work in patt to last 5 (5-5-8-8) dc, 2 dc bet 1st & 2nd dc of next shell, ch 3, turn. 1 (1-1-2-2) shells bound-off at each side.

2ND ROW: Sk half shell, count ch-3 as 1st dc work shell in next shell, work to last shell, 2 dc in last shell, 1 dc in turning-ch, ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW: Start with half shell, work in patt across, end with half shell in turning ch

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows once more.

There are 21 (23-24-24-25) shells with half shell at each side.

Cont in patt, ch 3 & turn after each row, work to 5” (5”-5½”-5½”-6”) above start of yoke, end on wrong side.

Width across is 13½” (14½”-15¼”-15¼”-15¾”).

BACK OPENING:
Work 10 (11-11-11-12) full shells, 2 dc in next shell, ch 3, turn.

Cont to work on 10 (11-11-11-12) full shells with half shell at each side to about 7” (7¼”-7½”-7¾”-7¾”) above underarm, end at side edge, turn, do not ch.

SHOULDER:
Sl st across 11 (13-13-13-15) dc, work to end, ch 3, turn. Work 4½ shells, fasten off.

SIZES 10(18) ONLY:
On right side, join yarn in last shell at center back.

SIZES 12(14-16) ONLY:
On right side, sk center shell, join yarn in next shell.

ALL SIZES:
Ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, work across 10 (11-11-11-12) shells with half shell at each side.

Work to corres to other side of back.

FRONT:
On right side, start at marker & omit back opening, work same as back yoke to 5½”(6”-6”-6½”-6½”) above start of yoke, end on right side, ch 3, turn.

NECK:
Work across half shell & 8 (9-9-9-10) full shells, ch 2, turn.

Dec half shell at neck edge every row 4 times.

If nec, work on 20 (23-23-23-26) dc to match back armhole end at neck edge.

Work across 9 (10-10-10-11) dc, fasten off.

Leave 5 (5-6-6-5) shells free at center front, join yarn in next shell, ch 3, work 2 dc in same sp.

Finish to corres to other side.

SLEEVES:
Ch 56 (59-62-65-68). 

1ST ROW: 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each rem ch – 55 (58-61-64-67) sc.

NEXT ROWS: With 17 (18-19-20-21) full shells & half shell at each side, work in pat for 3 rows.

Width across sleeve is 11” (11½”-12¼”-12¼”-13¼”).

SLEEVE CAP:
Sl st across 1st half shell & 2 (2-2-5-5) dc, ch 3, 1 dc in sp before next dc for half shell, work in patt to last 5 (5-5-8-8) dc, 2 dc bet 1st & 2nd dc of next shell.

Dec half shell each side every other row 1 (1-1-3-3) times, then every row until 13 (12-13-12-13) dc rem. Fasten off.

EDGING:
On right side, start at side crochet about 5 sc to every 6 sts at hemline – 297 (303-306-312-315) sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.

2ND ROW: Ch 3 for 1st dc, work in back lp only & hold back last lp of each dc, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sc, yo & thru 3 lps on hk, ch 2, * hold back last lp of each dc, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sc, yo & thru 4 lps on hk, ch 2, rep from * around. Join with sl st, ch 1. 

3RD ROW: * 1 Sc in 1st st, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, rep from * around. Join, ch 1.

4TH ROW: * Sl st in next st, ch 1, sk 1 sc, rep from * around, join, fasten.

FINISHING:
Seam shoulders.

On right side, start at back opening, crochet 1 row of sc around neck & opening, make ch-3 buttonloop at right back. Fasten off.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew sleeve seams, joining edges of yoke at underarm.
