Mod 1960s Chicago Color-Block Dress #1159

Directions are for Size 8.
Changes for Sizes 10, 12, 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
1 Pair Boye Knitting Needles #6
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Dimension 1 oz skein

GAUGE/MEASUREMENTS:
9 sts = 2”
13 rows = 2”

Width across back 16¾” (17¼”-18”-19”-20”)

Width across shoulders 13” (13¼”-13¾”-14¼”-14½”).

Width across sleeve 11½” (12”-12½”-13”-13¼”)

Width across hipline 17¾” (18¼”-19”-20”-21”)

NOTE:
When changing color, always bring new color from UNDER dropped color to prevent hole in your fabric.

Use separate skein for each color change.

Directions are for 35½” (35¾”-36”-36¼”-36½”) dress measured from hemline to back of neck. 

To lengthen, make adjustment before 1st dec.

BACK:
With Color B - cast on 90 (92-96-100-104).

K 1 row & P 1 row for 6 rows, inc 1 st each side on last row.

Join sep skein for each color change, work on 92 (94-98-102-106) sts:

K 12 (13-15-17-19) A, place marker on needle, K 34 B, place marker, K 34 A, place marker, K 12 (13-15-17-19) B.

Sl markers every row.

With matching colors, K next P row for turn.

Start with K row, work in St St with matching colors for 14 rows.

** Dec 1 each side on next row then every 12th row 5 times more.

AT SAME TIME break off & join colors as needed, work in block patt as follows: 

1ST ROW: With C - work to marker, with D - work to next marker, with C - work to next marker, with D - work to end.

2ND – 14TH ROWS: With matching colors, work in St St.

15TH ROW: With B - work to marker, with A - work to next marker, with B - work to next marker, with A - work to end.

16TH – 20TH ROWS: With matching colors, work in St St.

21ST ROW: With C - work to marker, with A - work to next marker, with C - work to next marker, with A - work to end.

22ND – 26TH ROWS: With matching colors, work in St St.

27TH – 38TH ROWS: Rep 15th thru 26th Rows.

39TH – 44TH ROWS: Rep 15th thru 20th Rows.

45TH ROW: With D - work to marker, with C - work to next marker, with D - work to next marker, with C - work to end.

46TH – 58TH ROWS: With matching colors, work in St St. 

59TH ROW: With A - work to marker, with B - work to next marker, with A - work to next marker, with B - work to end.

60TH – 72ND ROWS: With matching colors, work in St St.

There are 80 (82-86-90-94) sts & dress is about 13” above turn.

Width across hipline is 17¾” (18¼”-19”-20”-21”).

Rep these 72 rows for patt, dec 1 each side on next row, then every 10th (10th-8th-8th-6th) row 3(3-4-4-5) times more.

Work on 72 (74-76-80-82) sts to 21” above turn.

Inc 1 each side on next row, then every 12th (12th-6th-6th-4th) row 1 (1-2-2-3) times more.

Work on 76 (78-82-86-90) sts to 28” or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across back is 16¾” (17¼”-18”-19”-20”). **

ARMHOLES:
Bind off 4 at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 each side every other row 5 (5-6-7-8) times.

Work on 8 (60-62-64-66) sts to 3½” (3¾”-4”-4¼”-4½”) inches above underarm, end on right side.

Width across shoulders is 13” (13¼”-13¾”-14¼”-14½”).

OPENING:
Work 29 (30-31-32-33) & sl them to holder, work to end.

Work 1 more row, cast on 2 at opening for facing.

Work on 31 (32-33-34-35) sts to 6½”( 6¾”-7”-7¼”-7½”) above underarm, end on wrong side.

SHOULDER:
Bind off 5 at armhole edge 2 (3-3-4-4) times.

Then on SIZES 8 (10-12) ONLY bind off 4 at same edge 2(1-1) times. Sl rem sts to holder for neck.

Start at opening, cast on 2 sts & work other side to corres.

FRONT:
With Color B - cast on 90 (92-96-100-104).

P 1 row & K 1 row for 6 rows, inc 1 st each side on last row.

Start block patt on 92 (94-98-102-106) sts: P 12 (13-15-17-19) A, place marker, P 34 B, place marker, P 34 A, place marker, P 12 (13-15-17-19) B.

With matching colors P next K row for turn.

Start with P row, with matching colors, work in St St for 14 rows.

Work from ** to ** of back, break & join colors as needed on P rows to reverse block patt.

ARMHOLES:
Bind off 4 at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 each side every other row 5(5-6-7-8) times.

Work on the 58 (60-62-64-66) sts to 5½” above underarm, end on wrong side.

NECK:
Work 18 (19-19-20-20) and sl them to a holder, work center 22 (22-24-24-26) & sl them to 2nd holder for neck, work to end.

Work on 18 (19-19-20-20) sts to match back armhole.

SHOULDER:
Bind off 5 at armhole edge 2 (3-3-4-4) times.

THEN ON SIZES 8 (10-12) ONLY bind off 4 at same edge 2(1-1) times.

Start at neck, work other side.

SLEEVES:
With Color D - cast on 50 (52-54-56-58).

K 1 row & P 1 row for 6 rows, inc 1 each side on last row.

Start block patt on 52 (54-56-58-60) sts:

K 26 (27-28-29-30) D, place marker, K 26 (27-28-29-30) C.

With matching colors, K next P row for turn.

Start with K row, with matching colors work in St St for 14 rows. 

15TH ROW: K 26 (27-28-29-30) A, 26(27-28-29-30) B.

NEXT ROWS: With matching colors, work 5 more rows.

Cont in patt as on back to about 13” or desired length above turn, end with same stripe row as on back at underarm.

Width across sleeve is 11½” (12”-12½”-13”-13¼”).

SLEEVE CAP:
Bind off 4 at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 each side every other row until 20 sts rem.

Bind off 2 at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off.

NOTE:
Make 2nd sleeve exactly same. Sew shoulder seams.

NECK FACING:
With B - on right side, start at opening, K 13 (13-14-14-15) sts of left back, place marker, pick up & K 44 (46-48-50-52) on front incl holder, place marker, K 13 (13-14-14-15) sts of right back.

P 70 (72-76-78-82) sts. Inc 1 each side of each marker on every K row, work in St St for 6 rows. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING:
Turn in 2-st facings on back & sew.

Matching stripes, sew sleeve & side seams, then sew sleeves in armholes.

Sew up hems.

Make buttonloop at top of back opening.
