1950s Vogue Moss Tweed Double-Breasted Jacket #303

This Town & Country double-breasted jacket acts like a coat.  It is knitted to look like a knobby, flecked tweed…but not too bulky.  It works well on its own as a topper, but paired with a skirt would make a delightful suit.

Instructions: 
For a 32” bust. 
Changes for 34”, 36” & 38” sizes are given in brackets.

Materials
10 [11, 11, 12] oz Jaeger Spiral Spun in grey [A], 8 [8, 9, 9] oz in green [B], 8 [8, 9, 9] oz in white [C]
1 Pair each #8 & #9 Knitting Needles     
1 Medium Crochet Hook
1 yd ½” Ribbon                                            
6 Buttons

Measurements
To fit 32” [34”, 36” 38”] bust
Length21” [21 ¾”, 22 ½”, 23 ¼”].           
Sleeve seam [with cuff]:  15 ½”

Tension
6 sts & 9 rows = 1” over st 2

Stitches
[1]  Hem & pocket linings are st st. 
[2]  Main part is in moss tweed pattern. 

1st row:  With A [k 1, p 1] to last st, k1.

2nd row:  With B, list 1st row.

3rd row:  with C, list 1st row.  Rep these 3 rows.

Back
With #9 needles & A cast on 101 [107, 113, 119]. 

Work 1” in st 1, end with a k row. 

K next row to mark hemline. 

Change to #8 needles & st 2.  Work 2”. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 16th row until there are 109 [115, 121, 127] sts. 

Work until back meas 13” [13 ½”, 14”, 14 ½”] or desired length to armholes.

Shape Armholes: 
Cast off 4 [5, 6, 7] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of every row 3 times, then every alternate row until 81 [83, 89, 93] sts rem. 

Work until armholes are 8” [8 ¼‘, 8 ½”, 8 ¾”], meas on the straight.

Shape Shoulders
Cast off at beg of next & following rows 7 [5, 6, 7] sts twice & 6 [7, 7, 7] sts 6 times. 

Cast off rem 31 [33, 35, 37] sts for neck. 

Left Front: 
Work Pocket Lining:  With #9 needles & A, cast on 33. 

Work 4” in st 1, end with a p row. 

Change to st 2.  Work 4 rows. 

Cast off 2 at beg of next 2 rows.  Leave sts on holder. 

Now with #9 needles & A cast on 62 [66, 70, 74]. 

Work 1” in st 1, end with a k row. 

K next row to mark hemline. 

Change to #8 needles & st 2.  Work 2”, end at side edge. 

Inc 1 at beg of next & following 16th row. 

Work until Front meas 5” from hemline, end at side edge.

Work Pocket: 
Next row:  Work 11 [13, 15, 17], cast off 29, work to end.

Following row:  Work to cast-off sts, work sts of Pocket Lining, work to end. 

Cont to inc at side edge every 16th row until there are 66 [70, 74, 78] sts. 

Work until Front meas same as back to armholes, end at side edge.

Shape Armhole: 
Cast off 5 [6, 7, 8] at beg of next row. 

Dec 1 at same edge every row 4 times, then every alternate row until 51 [53, 55, 57] sts rem. 

Work until Armhole meas same as those of Back.

Shape Shoulder: 
Cast off at Armhole edge 7 [5, 6, 7] sts once & 6 [6, 7, 7] sts 3 times. 

Cast off rem 26 [27, 28, 29] sts for reverse.

Right Front: 
Follow instructions for Left Front, reversing shapings & position of pocket. 

Work 1st set of buttonholes when Front meas 8” from hemline as follows:  from centre-front edge work 2, cast off 4, work 13 [14, 15 16], cast off 4, work to end. 

In next row cast on 4 above cast-off sts. 

Work 2 more sets of buttonholes 28 [30, 32, 34] rows apart.

Sleeves
With #8 needles & A cast on 33 [35, 35, 37]. 

Work in st 2.  Work 2 ½”, end with 3rd patt row. 

Leave sts on spare needle. 

Work another piece in same way. 

Next row:  Work  across sts of second piece, cast on 1, work across sts of 1st piece 67 [71, 71, 75] sts. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 10th row until there are 85 [89, 93, 97] sts. 

Work until Sleeve meas 15 ½” from beg or 2 ½” more than desired seam length.

Shape Top
Cast off 5 [6, 7, 8] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of next 3 rows, then every alternate row until 29 sts rem. 

Dec 1 each end of next 6 rows.  Cast off. 

Collar
With #8 needles & A cast on 21 [23, 25, 27]. 

Work in st 2.  Work 1 row. 

Cast on 7 at beg of next 4 rows & 8 [9, 10, 11] at beg of following 2 rows.  65 [69, 73, 77] sts. 

Work 2 ½”.  Cast off loosely.

To Make Up: 
Sew shoulder seams. 

Set in sleeves. 

Sew side & sleeve seams. 

Turn up & slip-stitch hems. 

Sew down pocket linings. 

Buttonhole-stitch round buttonholes. 

Sew collar to neck, pin from centre-back towards fronts, ease back slightly. 

Work 1 row of firm dc in A round cuffs, pocket tops, fronts, lapels & collar. 

Press lightly. 

Sew on buttons. 

Stitch a piece of ribbon along turning lines of cuffs & along back of neck, cutting ribbon slightly shorter to prevent stretching.
