Vintage 1950s Lacy Torso Blouse #660

A skillful needlewoman will swiftly crochet this charming sweater with it‘s slimming design, accented by the gold, buttoned closure…A delightful, addition to the well-dressed woman‘s wardrobe!


SIZES:  12, 14, 16 & 18. 
Directions are given for size 12, with changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 in brackets.

Materials: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen Metallic, Art 64, 10 [10, 12, 14] balls of white
#2 Steel Crochet Hook
OR Chadwicks Red Heart Baby Wool, 3-ply, 1 oz  - 7 [7, 8, 9] skeins of maize
#2 Plastic Crochet Hook
8 Small Buttons
1 yd White Grosgrain Ribbon 1” wide
2 pkgs each Lime & Gold Sequins & Kelly Green & Gold Beads

GAUGE:  
7 sc = 1”;   3 sc rows, 1 group st row & 1 loop row = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:  
Bust 32” [34”, 36”, 38”]; 
Width across back at underarm 16” [17”, 17”, 18”];  
Length from shoulder to lower edge 19” [19 ½”, 19 ½”, 20”]

BACK:  
Starting at side edge, make ch 25” long.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until there are on row 133 [137, 137, 141] sc; row meas 19” [19 ½”, 19 ½”, 20”].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in front lp of each sc across.  Ch 4, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sk first st, insert hk in back lp of next st & draw lp thru, sk next st, insert hk in back lp of next st & draw lp thru, * [yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk] twice [group st made]; ch 1, insert hk where last lp was drawn thru & draw lp thru, sk next st, insert hk in back lp of next st & draw lp thru.  Rep from * across to within last st, ch 1, dc in last st.   65 [67, 67, 69] group sts.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc thru both lps of dc, ch 1, * sc in front lp of next group st, ch 3, sk next group st.  Rep from * across, ending with ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch [this is ch-3 lp row].  Ch 4, turn.

5TH ROW:  Rep 3rd row.  65 [67, 67, 69] group sts.  Ch 1, turn.

6TH ROW:  Sc in front lp of each st across, sc in next 2 ch.  Ch 1, turn.

7TH ROW:  Sc in back lp of each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

8TH ROW:  Rep 2nd row.

9TH THRU 12TH ROWS:  Rep 3rd thru 6th rows.

13TH ROW:  2 Sc in back lp of first 2 sc [2 sc inc at shoulder edge], sc in back lp of each sc across.  Ch1, turn.

14TH ROW:  Sc in front lp of each sc across to within last 2 sc, inc 2 sc as before.  Ch 4, turn. 

Work in patt for 2 more rows.  Place marker [this is end of shoulder]. 

Cont in patt without inc until 40 [43, 43, 46] rows have been completed.  67 [69, 69, 71] group sts.  This is one half of Back. 

Place marker of another color & work other half to correspond, dec 4 sc where 4 sc were prev inc [to dec 2 sc: work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice].  Break off.

LEFT FRONT:  
Starting at side edge make ch 25” long.

ON SIZE 12 ONLY:  
Cont as for Back until shoulder has been completed.

ON SIZES 14, 16 & 18 ONLY:  
1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until there are on row [89, 89, 89] sc.  Cut off any rem ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in front lp of each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  ON SIZES 14, 16 & 18 ONLY:  Make sc in back lp of each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

ON SIZE 18 ONLY:  
Rep last 2 rows once more.  Ch 4, turn.

ON SIZES 16 & 18 ONLY:  
Work next 3 rows as for 3rd, 4th & 5th rows of Back.

ON SIZE 14 ONLY:  
Sc in front lp of each sc across.  Ch 49, turn.

ON SIZES 16 & 18 ONLY:  
Ch 49 [53].

ON SIZES 14, 16 & 18 ONLY:  
Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across, sc in back lp of each st across.

NEXT ROW:  Make sc in front lp of each st across. 

Now work in patt as for Back until shoulder has been completed.

ON ALL SIZES:  Break off.

SHAPE NECK:  
Attach thread to center ch of 9th ch-3 sp from shoulder edge.

1ST ROW:  Ch 4, draw up lp in next ch, sk next st, draw up lp in next st & complete group st as before, ch 1 & cont in patt across.  Ch 1, turn. 

Keeping shoulder in position, work in patt as before until work reaches marker at center back.

BUTTONBAND:  
Work 6 rows of sc, making 1 row in back lps & next row in front lps.  Break off. 

On Left Front, mark with pins position of 7 buttons evenly spaced, having lower one ½” up from lower edge & top one 1” down from neck edge.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Starting at front edge, work as for Buttonband of Left Front, having same number of sc & making buttonhole opposite each pin mark on center row of Buttonband [to make buttonhole;  ch 3, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc].  

Cont in patt as for other front until work lines up with shoulder edge.  

Attach another ball to top ch at beg of last row, ch 36 for side neck edge.  Break off. 

Pick up working thread & complete shoulder to correspond with other front.  Break off.

ON SIZES 14, 16 7 18 ONLY:  
Place Right Front over Left Front, attach thread in line with underarm seam & complete to correspond with Left Front.

FINISHING:  
ON SIZE 12 ONLY:  Sew up side seams to within 7” from top. 

Sew shoulder seams.

ON OTHER SIZES:  
Sew up shoulder & side seams. 

Work 5 rows of sc closely tog around lower edge alternating front & back lps as before. 

Work 5 rnds of sc around armholes, working in back lps. 

If longer sleeve is desired, add few more rnds. 

Work 5 rows of sc around neck edge as before, keeping work flat & making buttonhole directly above other buttonholes on 3rd row. 

Cut piece of ribbon same meas as waist & sew in place on wrong side, holding blouse in to fit. 

Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. 

Trim with sequins & beads as desired.
