1946 Evening Tunic with High Neck #985

Flared & flattering, this dinner date tunic has a wealth of style points:  High neckline…rounded shoulders…short sleeves…& the full-in-front look of the flaring tunic…to wear belted…or not.

SIZES:
14 – 16 & 18 – 20.
Directions are for 14-16, with changes for 18-20 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Columbia Zephyrdown 1 oz: 12 [15] balls
Pair standard knitting needles #3 – 14”
2 Buttons

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1” [garter st]

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust:  32”-34”  [36”-38”]
Waist:  26 ½”-28”  [30”-32”]
Hips:  35”-37”  [39”-41”]

PATTERN STITCH:  [MULTIPLE OF 8 STS PLUS 6]:

RIGHT SIDE OF WORK:
1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 1, k 1, p 1, k 5, rep from * across row, end p 1, k 1, p 1, k 2.

2ND ROW:  P 3, * k 1, p 7, rep from * across row, end k 1, p 2.

3RD ROW:  Same as 1st row.

4TH ROW:  P across row.

5TH ROW:  * K 5, p 1, k 1, p 1, rep from * across row, end k 5, p 1.

6TH ROW:  * P 7, k 1, rep from * across row, end p 6.

7TH ROW:  Same as 5th row.

8TH ROW:  P across row.

Rep 8 rows for patt.

FRONT:
Cast on 200 [208] sts.

K 44 rows [22 ribs] in garter st.

K 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row, [4 rows stockinette st], then k 6 rows [3 ribs] in garter st.

Now work in stockinette st, dec 10 sts across 1st row as follows:  [right side of work]: k 9 [k 13], k 2 tog, * k 18, k 2 tog, rep from * across.

Cont to dec in this manner every 1” 6 times more [have 1 st less bet decs each dec row].
Sts on needle:  130 [138] sts.

When work meas 10” from start, dec 32 sts across next row by k every 3rd & 4th st tog.
Sts on needle:  98 [106] sts.

Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 rows, inc 20 sts across last row [k 2 sts in 1st st, then every 5th st.]

Sts on needle:  118 [126] sts.

Next row [right side of work], start patt st.  When work meas 2” above ribbing, inc 1 st each side, then inc 1 st each side every 4th row 12 times more.  Be careful to keep patt even.

Sts on needle:  144 [152] sts.

When work meas 18” from start:
SHAPE ARMHOLES:  Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows, then bind off 2 sts at beg of each row 6 times, then dec 1 st each side every other row 5 times.

Sts on needle:  106 [114] sts.

Work even until armholes meas 4 ½” [meas straight up from bound off sts at underarm].

SHAPE NECK:  
Work across 1st 43 [46] sts.

Sl these sts on holder.  Bind off 20 [22] sts, work across rem sts [right shoulder].

Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 7 times.

When armhole meas 8” [8 ½”]:
SHAPE SHOULDER:  
Bind off 12 [13] sts [at armhole edge] every other row 3 times.

Work left shoulder to correspond.

BACK:  
Work same as front until work meas 21” from start, then divide sts for back opening.

Work across 50 [54] sts.

K 6  [garter st] for border.  Place rem sts on holder.

Work even until armhole meas same as back.

Shape shoulder to correspond with front, bind off rem sts for back of neck.

Work other side to correspond, cast on 6 sts at neck opening for underlap, [work these 6 sts in garter st].

SLEEVES:  
Cast on 90 [98] sts.

Work in garter st for ¾”, then work in patt st for ¾” even.

Dec 1 st each side every other row 24 times, then dec 1 st each side every row 13 times.

Bind off rem sts.

NECKBAND:  
Cast on 132 [142] sts, & work in garter st for 1”, then dec 2 sts 10 times across row – by k every 10th & 11th st, 12th & 13th st tog [by k every 11th & 12th, 13th & 14th st tog] .

K 1 row, then dec 20 sts again in same manner having 2 sts less bet decs, bind off.

FINISHING:  
Sew shoulder seams & sew sleeves in place.

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Sew neckband in place.

Make 2 lps for buttonholes at back of neck opening.

Sew on 2 buttons.
