HAT:
CROWN:
1ST RND:  Ch 2, 9 sc in 2nd ch from hk.  Join with sl st to 1st sc.

2ND RND:  Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around [18 sc].  Join.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, insert hk in 2nd ch from hk & draw lp thru, insert hk in next ch & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of same sc where sl st was made & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru all lps on hk, ch 1 to fasten – star st made.  * Insert hk in fastening ch & draw lp thru, insert hk in last lp of prev st & draw lp thru, insert hk in same place where last lp of prev st was made & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru all lps on hk.  Rep from * around [18 star sts].  Join with sl st to top of ch-3, sl st in fastening ch of 1st star st.

4TH RND:  Ch 1, 2 sc in back lp only of same fastening ch where sl st was made, * 2 sc in back lp of fastening ch of next star st.  Rep from * around [36 sc].  Join.

5TH RND:  Same as 3rd rnd [36 star sts].  Join; sl st in fastening ch of 1st star st.

6TH RND:  Ch 1, sc in back lp only of same fastening ch, * 2 sc in back lp of fastening ch of next star st, sc in fastening ch of next star st.  Rep from * around [54 sc].  Join.

Cont in patt, inc 18 sts on each sc rnd, ending with 6th rnd of star sts [108 sts].  Join.

NEXT RND:  Ch 1, work sc in back lp of each fastening ch around [108 sc].  Join.

Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times [8 rnds of star sts].

NEXT RND:  Sc, dec by working tog every 5th & 6th st in rnd [90 sts].  Join.

FOLLOWING RND:  Sc in each st.  Join. 

Work should meas about 21” around.

BAND:
1ST RND:  Thru front lps only, work sc in each st around.  Join.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, then work star st around [90 star sts].  Join.

3RD RND:  Ch 1, work sc in back lp of each fastening ch around [90 sc]. 

Rep last 2 rnds once morel, then work 1 more rnd of sc.  Join & fasten off.

FINISHED:
If desired, crown may be stiffened by brushing inside with millinery sizing.

Sew on feather trim. 

BAG:
BACK & FLAP:
Starting at center, ch 17.

1ST RND:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next 14 ch, 6 sc in next [end] ch, then working along other side of foundation chain, work sc in next 14 ch, 5 sc in same ch where 1st sc was made.  Join with sl st in 1st sc.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, insert hk in 2nd ch from hk & draw lp thru, insert hk in next ch & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of same sc where sl st was made & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru all lps on hk, ch 1 to fasten – star st made.  * Insert hk in fastening ch & draw lp thru, insert hk in last lp of prev st & draw lp thru, insert hk in same place where last lp of prev st was made & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru all lps on hk.  Rep from * around [40 star sts].  Sl st in top of starting ch-3.

3RD RND:  Sc in back lp only of fastening ch of 1st star st, insert marker in work, sc in back lp of next 14 star sts, insert 2nd marker, 2 sc in fastening ch of next 6 star sts, insert 3rd marker, sc in fastening ch of next 14 star sts, insert 4th marker, 2 sc in fastening chain of next 5 star sts, sc in same place as sl st [52 sc].  Join.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, work star st thru back lp of each sc around [52 star sts].  Join.

5TH RND:  Sc in back lp of each star st to 2nd marker, cont sc in same way inc 6 sts evenly bet 2nd & 3rd markers, sc in back lp of each star st to 4th marker, cont sc in same way inc 6 sts evenly bet 4th marker & end of rnd [12 sts inc in rnd, 6 aroudn curve at each end of oval].

6TH RND:  Same as 4th rnd [64 star sts].  Join.

Cont in patt, inc 6 sts at each end on each sc rnd, until there are 7 rnds of star sts [112 sts], ending with star st rnd.  Join.

NEXT RND:  Work sc in each st around.  Join & fasten off.

FRONT:
Starting at center, ch 16.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next 13 ch, 6 sc in next [end] ch, then working along other side of foundation chain, work sc in next 13 ch, sc in same ch where 1st sc was made.  Ch 3, turn [34 sc].

2ND ROW:  Thru back lps only, work star st in each sc around [34 star sts].  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Thru front lp only of fastening ch of each star st, work sc in 14 star sts.  Insert marker, work 2 sc in next 6 star st, insert 2nd marker, work sc in last 14 star sts  [40 sc].  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row [40 star sts].  Ch 1, turn.

Cont in patt, inc 6 sts evenly around curve on each sc row until there are 7 rows of star sts, ending with star st row [70 star sts].  Ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work sc in each st around.  Fasten off.

ROLL & HANDLE:
Make 50” chain.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next 2 ch.  Rep from * across until row is long enough to fit loosely around oval piece of crochet.  Ch 3, turn.  Cut off rem chain.

2ND ROW:  Thru back lps only, work star st in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Work sc in front lp of fastening ch of each star st across.  Ch 3, turn.

Rep last 2 rows until piece meas 2 ½”, ending with star st row.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Using crocheted pieces as patt, cut buckram interlining to exact size of front & back pieces.

Cut double lining, ½” larger all around than buckram.

Matching markers, & with right side of star st to outside, sl st tog last row of front & back pieces of crochet [portion of oval extending at top will form flap].

Work 2 rows of sc across top edge of front, shirring slightly.

Make lining, inserting interlining, [do not stitch seam around flap end of lining].

Insert lining in bag & tack in place around outer seam.

Turn flap & lining down over pencil & sew securely.

Work 1 row sc around flap to center, make 2 ½” chain, sl st in last sc made, work sc closely over chain, sl st in same place as last sl st, cont sc to end of flap.

Cut cardboard slightly smaller than flap & insert bet outer lining & buckram, then sew seam around flap of lining.

Sew lining to crocheted flap.

Roll handle piece into heavy cord & sl st tog along last row.

Sew in place.  Sew ends tog.

Cover button mold with sc’s & sew in place.
