Vintage 1945 Ridged
Knit Purse #275
Quick & easy to create, this stylish handbag will become a
season-spanning favorite!
Materials:
Chadwicks
Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 6 balls [1 oz balls]
1
Pair #4 [3 ½ mm] Knitting Needles
2
Belt Buckles
¾
yd each Buckram & Felt for Lining
Gauge:
5
½ sts = 1”;
7
rows = 1”
Bag Piece [Make 2]:
Starting
at center, cast on 120 sts.
1st row:
K
across.
2nd row:
P
across.
3rd to 6th rows: Rep 1st & 2nd rows.
7th & 8th rows: K across.
These
8 rows constitute patt.
Work
in patt until 6 ridges have been made, end with 2nd row.
To Shape Gusset:
1st row:
K
69, k 2 tog, turn.
2nd row:
P
19, p 2 tog, turn.
3rd row:
K
19, k 2 tog, turn. Working in patt, rep
2nd & 3rd rows of gusset until 48 sts rem. Then k 3 tog [instead of k 2 tog] until 20
sts rem. Bind off.
Handle:
Cast
on 14 sts.
Work
in patt until Handle meas 36”. Bind
off.
FINISHING:
Block
& press bag pieces & handle.
Turn
bag pieces inside out & make paper patt to fit exactly.
Cut
buckram from patt, cut lining ½” larger all around.
Sew
lining pieces over buckram, turning back ½” allowance all around.
Sew
bag pieces tog at cast on edges, working from wrong side.
Sew
both bag pieces & lining pieces tog.
Turn
bag right side out, blind st lining in place.
Fold
top of gusset toward inside of bag & sew in pleat at top.
Line
handle with buckram & lining material.
Cover
buckles with buttonhole stitch & slip over handle.
Sew
handle over center seam of bag, moving buckles to top of bag.
Sew
short ends of handle tog.

JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make
paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used
later.
Cut
lining according to paper patts & sew tog.
Shirr
lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.
Insert
finished lining in bag.
Sew
in zipper [if desired].
Note: Cardboard
or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape
of bag extra support.
