1945 Peek-a-Boo Cap & Ruffled Handbag Set #1037

MATERIALS:
BAG:
Hiawatha Super Crepe Corde Art #42, 5 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Twist Rayon Cord Art #41, 5 tubes
OR

Steel Crochet Hooks #1 & #00

HAT:
Hiawatha Super Crepe Corde Art #42, 2 tubes
OR

2 yds Velvet Ribbon ¼” wide

BAG:
SIDE [MAKE 2]:
Starting at top, using smaller hk, make 16” chain,

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until row meas 14” [be sure to have even number of sts].  Ch 2, turn.  Cut off rem chain.

Change to larger hk.
2ND ROW:  * Sk 1 st, sc in next st, ch 1.  Rep from * across, ending with sc in last st.  Ch 2, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp.  Rep from * across, ending with sc under turning ch 2. 

Rep 3rd row until piece meas ¾”.

Change to smaller hk.
NEXT ROW:  Sc in each st & in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Thru back lps only, work sc in each st across [ruffle will be worked thru rem ridge].  Change to larger hk.  Ch 2, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Same as 2nd row.  Ch2, turn.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Sc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, in next ch-1 sp work 2 sc with ch 1 bet [inc made], cont in patt across, inc as before in 3rd ch-1 sp from end of row. 

Work 5 rows even in patt [no incs].

Rep last 6 rows, thus inc 2 sts every 1”, until piece meas 8” from beg.  Fasten off.

RUFFLE:
With top of piece toward you, using smaller hk, attach corde to ridge rem on right side of work.

1ST ROW:  Sc in each st across.  Ch 3, turn.

Change to larger hk.
2ND ROW:  Dc at base of ch-3, * 2 dc in next st.  Rep from * across.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  * 2 Dc in next st, dc in next st.  Rep from * across.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW:  Dc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  Sc in each st across.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew seams, catching side edges of ruffles in seams.

Insert bag lining & sew in place.

Sew crocheted piece securely to lining at top of ruffle.

Tack bottom corners of bag to lining & poke in corners as shown in photo.

Make piece for handle as follows:
Ch 7, sc in 3rd ch from hk, [ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch] twice.  Ch 2, turn.

Work in patt until piece meas 1 ½”.

Make 3 more pieces in same way & sew on handles as shown in photo.


MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.


HAT:
Starting at top, ch 44 [chain should meas 9”].  Join with sl st into ring, be careful not to twist.

1ST RND:  * Sc in next ch, 2 sc in next ch.  Rep from * around [66 sts].

2ND RND:  * Ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st.  Rep from * around [33 ch-1 sps].

3RD RND:  Ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, in next sp work 2 sc with ch 1 bet [inc made], cont working ch 1 & sc in each ch-1 sp around, inc 6 sts evenly in rnd.

Rep 3rd rnd [do not inc directly over prev incs] until there are 48 sts in rnd.

Work even in patt [no more incs] until hat is 4 ½” deep, when stretched to proper headsize.  Sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

RUFFLE:
1ST RND:  Attach corde to starting chain & work sc in each ch around [44 sts].  Join with sl st in 1st sc.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, dc at base of ch-3, 2 dc in each st around [88 sts].  Join with sl st in top of ch-3.

3RD RND:  Same as 2nd rnd.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, work dc in each st around.  Join & fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew velvet ribbon band around starting chain.

Make 6 small velvet bows & sew on band as shown in photo.
