Free Pattern - 1940’s Knit Draw String Bag #1031

Vintage 1940’s Knit Draw String Bag #1031


MATERIALS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 1 oz, 3 balls of blue & 2 balls of white
Set of 4 Double-Pointed Bone Sock Needles #3 [3 mm]
Bone Crochet Hook #4 or #5
Round cookie carton or candy box, 6” in diameter

GAUGE:
6 sts = 1”
8 rnds = 1”

BAG:
Starting at top with blue, cast on 108 sts.

Divide these sts among 3 needles.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.

1ST TO 8TH RNDS INCL:  * K 9, p 9, rep from * around.

9TH RND:  * O, k 2 tog, k 7, o, p 2 tog, p 7.  Rep from * around.

Now rep 1st rnd until piece meas 4” in all.

NEXT RND:  K around.  Attach white.

Now work in patt as follows:
Always carry unused color very loosely across back of work.

1ST RND:  K 1 white, * k 1 blue, k 2 white.  Rep from * around, ending with k 1 white.

2ND RND:  K 4 white, * k 1 blue, k 8 white.  Rep from * around, ending with k 4 white.

3RD RND:  K 3 white, * k 3 blue, k 6 white.  Rep from * around, ending with k 3 white.

4TH RND:  K 2 white, * k 5 blue, k 4 white.  Rep from * around, ending with k 2 white.

These 4 rnds constitute patt.

Work until patt meas the same as depth of carton.  Break off white.

K 2 rnds with blue.

SHAPE BOTTOM:
1ST RND:  * K 2 tog, k 7.  Rep from * around.

2ND & 3RD RNDS:  K around.

4TH RND:  * K 2 tog, k 6.  Rep from * around.

5TH & 6TH RNDS:  K around.

7TH RND:  * K 2 tog, k 5.  Rep from * around. 

Cont dec in this manner every 3rd rnd, having 1 st less bet decs on each dec rnd, until 12 sts rem.

NEXT RND:  K around.

FOLLOWING RND:  * K 2 tog.  Rep from * around.  Break off yarn, leaving 6” length.

Thread needle with this length, run thru rem sts, pull tight & fasten securely on wrong side.

CORD:
Using double strand of white, make chain 1 yard [36”] long.

Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across.  Fasten off.

Run cord thru openings in ribbing & tie ends in knot. 

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
