1940s Anchors Away Sailor Hat & Bag #685

MATERIALS:
2 Tubes Peter Pan Cordet – Hat
5 Tubes Peter Pan Cordet – Dark
2 Tubes Peter Pan Cordet Rainbow – Bag
#3 Bone Crochet Hook

SAILOR HAT:
CH 3 & join in ring with sl st.

1ST ROW:  6 SC in ring.

2ND ROW:  Work 2 SC in every st.

NEXT ROWS: Cont to work in SC, putting 6 incs in row. Keep top flat, until entire piece meas 10” across in diameter.

NEXT ROWS: Work 1” even.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st every 10 sts, until you get desired head size.

NEXT ROWS: Work even for 1” band.  Break yarn.

BAG:
CH 16 sts.

Work 1 SC in each of 14 CHs. Work 3 SC in last st.

Working on other side of CH, work 3 SC in 1st st, work 1 SC in each of next 14 sts. CH 1 to turn.

Rest of bag worked in SC, pick up back half of st only.

Work 1 SC in each of next 15 sts, 3 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of next 2 sts, 3 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of next 15 sts.

CH 1, turn, 1 SC in each of next 16 sts, 3 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of next 4 sts, 3 SC in next st, 1 SC in next 16 sts.

Cont in this way, always have 1 st more on sides, 3 SC in each corner, & always have 2 sts more bet incs.

Work 18 rows of rainbow in this way, & 16 rows in solid color, or desired size.

Work 2nd piece to match.

GUSSET:
CH 1 ½” wide, work back & forth in SC, pick up back half of st only, until strip is long enough to fit around 3 sides of bag.

Sew gusset bet both sides of bag.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
