Vintage 1912 Lace Filet Opera Purse #597


A clever woman very quickly & easily will crochet this exquisite opera bag in a delightful filet pattern…lovely in white & pastels, or sophisticated in black for an evening bag… it will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS:
1 skein Perle Cotton #3
#2 Star Crochet Hook
1 Bone Ring, 2” in diameter
4 Bone Rings, ¾” in diameter.
Lining Material
Featherbone [plastic or cardboard]

BAG:
Ch 116 & turn.

1ST ROW:  1 Dc in eighth ch from hk, * ch 2, sk 2, dc in next & rep from * to end of foundation ch, thus making 37 sps, ch 5 & turn.

2ND ROW: * Dc on dc, 2 dc in sp, rep twice from * make 9 dc in 3 sps, ch 2, sk 1 sp & rep from * end row with 1 dc, ch 5 & turn.

3RD ROW:  * 1 Dc on each of first 4 dc, take up both threads of st of prev row, 1 long treble cluster around post of fifth st of prev row, made as follows : yo twice, pick up lp, yo & thru 2, yo & thru 2, yo & pick up another lp around same st, yo & thru 2, yo & pick up third lp around same st (5 lps on hk)—over & thru 2 & rep from—until 1 lp rem.  (No further description of this cluster will be given) 1 dc on each of last 4 sts of block, ch 2 & rep from * to end of row, ch 5 & turn.

4TH ROW:  * 9 Dc on 9 sts of last row, ch 2 & rep from *, ch 5 & turn.

5TH ROW:  * Dc on first dc, ch 2, sk 2, 1 dc, ch 2, sk 2, 1 dc, ch 2, sk 1, 1 dc. in last dc. of block, ch 2 & rep from * in each block to end of row, form 37 sps in row, ch 5 & turn.

6TH ROW:  Dc on first dc * ch 5, yo hk twice, pick up lp in next dc, yo & thru 2, twice, keep 2 lps on hook, yo & pick up lp in next dc, yo & thru 2, three times.  Rep from * 4 times, ch 5, 1 dc on next dc, ch 2, make 3 blocks as border was made, then make 2nd part of row like first, reverse directions, end row with ch 2, 1 dc on turning ch, turn.

7TH ROW:  Shell of 4 dc on second dc, 1 sc in center of 5 chs, shell on crossed treble, sc in next ch, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, another sc in same place for picot, ch 5, picot as before in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell on treble, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc on dc, ch 2, rep 3 blocks, as before, then make 2nd part of row, reverse patt, 1 sc in last dc, ch 3 & turn.

8TH ROW:  3 Dc in sc below, sc in center of shell, ch 5, sc in center of next shell, shell in sc below, sc in center of next ch, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc below, sc in center of shell, ch 5, sc on ch, ch 3, dc on dc, ch 2, rep block patt, reverse patt, ch 3 & turn.

9TH ROW:  Shell in first dc, sc in next, ch 5. picot in next sp, ch 5, sc in shell, shell in sc. below, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc, sc in shell, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 3, dc on dc; rep blocks, reverse, ch 3 & turn.

10TH ROW:  Shell in first dc, sc in center of shell, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, picot in next, ch 5, sc in shell, shell in sc, sc in sp, shell in sc below, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, dc on dc, make 3 blocks, reverse, then ch 3 & turn.

11TH ROW:  Shell in first dc, sc in center of shell, * ch 5, picot in next sp, rep from * twice, ch 5, sc in shell, shell in sc below, sc in next sp, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 3, dc on dc; 3 three blocks, reverse & turn.

This completes one half of the bag.

12TH ROW:  Sl st to center of shell, shell in sc below, * ch 5, picot in next sp, rep from *, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc below, sc in center of shell, shell in next sc, sc in next sp, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, dc on dc; make 3 blocks, reverse, end row with sc in center of shell, turn.

13TH ROW:  Sl st to center of shell, shell in sc below, sc in next sp, ch 5, picot in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc below, sc in shell, ch 5, sc in next shell, shell in sc below, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next, ch 3, dc on dc; make sps across blocks, reverse, end row with sc in center of shell, turn.

14TH ROW:  Sl st to center of shell, shell in sc below, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc below, sc on shell, ch 5, picot, ch 5, sc in next sp, shell in sc below, sc in next sp, ch 5, dc on dc; make 3 blocks, reverse, end row with sc in center of shell, turn.

15TH ROW:  Sl st to center of shell, shell in sc below, sc in sp, shell in sc below, sc in sp, * ch 5, picot in sp, rep from * ch 5, sc in shell, shell in sc below, sc in sp, ch 3, dc on dc; make 3 blocks, reverse, end row with sc in center of shell, turn.

16TH ROW:  Ch 5, dc in center of shell, * ch 2, dc in next shell, ch 2, another dc in same place, rep from * 4 times, ch 2, dc on dc; make blocks, reverse, end with ch 2 & 1 dc in last st, turn.

Rep 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, 4TH & 5TH ROWS for 2ND BORDER.  Fasten off.

Work across point, as follows:  Fasten thread in left hand corner of 5th row with 1 sc, ch 8, sl st in sc at end of 7th row, 6 sc in lp of ch 8 just made, ch 8, sl st in dc of 9th row, 6 sc in lp, as before, ch 8, sl st in end of 10th row, 6 sc in lp, ch 8, catch in end of 11th row, 6 sc in lp, ch 8 & catch in same row, 6 sc in lp, then make second side of point to match first, end with ch 8 & catch in end of 16th row. 

In this ch lp, make 3 sc, ch 3 & catch back to form picot, 3 more sc in same lp, * 1 sc in next lp, picot, 3 sc in same lp & rep from * 6 times, add extra picot & 3 sc in center lp on point.  In final lp make 3 sc, picot, 3 sc.

In small spaces all around work, as follows:
* 3 Sc in first sp, 1 sc, picot, 2 sc all in next sp, & rep from *.  In corner sps make 3 sc, picot, 3 sc. 

Work 2nd point when reached, as first was made.

Cover small rings, as follows:
* 2 Sc in ring, ch 3 & catch back for picot & rep from * 11 times, join & fasten to bag, as illustrated.

Cord
Ch 280 & turn. 

Make sl st in each ch for entire length. 

Cover large ring with sc. 

Draw cord thru small rings, as illustrated & fasten ends to large ring.

Line bag with selected material & put pocket on one side of lining.

Stiffen hem & center of bag with featherbone.
