Vintage Reversible Cape

Quick & easy to
create, this becoming reversible cape will become a season-spanning wardrobe
favorite…perfect for town or country!
SIZE:
Small,
Medium, & Large.
Directions
are given for Small with changes for Medium & Large in brackets.
MATERIALS:
3-ply
Rug or Craft Yarn, Wool or Synthetic, 32 [40, 48] oz Main Color [MC]
& 4 [8, 8] oz Contrasting Color [CC]
& 4 [8, 8] oz Contrasting Color [CC]

- 1 ½” Buttons 1 - 4” Wide Belt
Buckle
MEASUREMENTS:
Back
of neck to hem - 32”
GAUGE:
Length: 2 sts = 1”; Width:
3 rows = 1”
Cape
is worked with 2 skeins of MC until the border, & the border is worked with
1 skein each of MC & CC.
CAPE: [MAKE 5 PIECES]:
Start
at neck with MC & #K hk, ch 9 [12, 15].
Change
to #N hk & insert hk in 2nd st from hk, yo pull up new st, hold
on st. Cont across row holding all sts
on hk.
Slide
all work to other side of needle & turn.
Tie in 2nd skein of MC loosely & yo pull thru 1 st, * yo
pull thru 2 sts, cont from * across row.
Do not turn work, work right to left. Insert hk in last st just made, [hk is inserted
in horizontal bar, under 1st lp, not cross bar as for regular
afghan], yo pull up new st, hold on hk.
Work across row, holding all sts on hk, inc 1 st at end of work. [Inc--pick up extra lp in vertical bar 2 sts
before end of row.]
Cont
working basic Cro-hk Knit st, follow 3rd & 4th rows,
inc 1 st at end of 4th row, until 57 [60, 63] sts on needle.
Piece
will meas 22” long or desired length, end with 3rd row. Fasten off.
BORDER:
Work
same on all 5 pieces with MC & CC tog.
Using
#K & MC, ch 57 [60, 63].
Change
to #N & cont same as 2nd row of Cape.
Cont
same as 3rd & 4th rows of Cape, except do not inc after 4th
row. [Remember to attach CC in 3rd
row of Capt patt].
PATTERN:
Yo
pull thru 1 st, * ch 2, yo pull thru 3 sts, cont from * across row. End ch 2.
Do not turn work, cont pick up sts, same as 4th row
of Cape. 57 [60, 63] sts picked up. In picking up sts, sk 1st st, pick
up 1 st in each ch-2 st & 1 st in top of each 3 st cluster.
Cont
rep Border rows, 4, 5, until you have 5 rows of cluster patt. End with 4th row, MC, of Cape
patt, leave all sts on needle.
ASSEMBLING:
Attach
1 strip of Cape to 1 strip of Border at bottom, work left to right, work same
as 3rd row of Cape patt as follows:
pick up 1 st of Cape, yo, pull thru 2 sts, [1 st from Cape, 1 st from
Border], pick up 2nd st from Cape, yo, pull thru 3 sts, [1 st from
Cape, 2 sts from Border]. Cont work
across row same, fasten off.
Assemble
4 other Border strips to Cape pieces in same manner.
Use
yarn needle & MC, start at neck, weave 3 pieces tog, length of piece for
back & sides.
The
2 Front pieces are woven tog to elbow length, leave open rest of way down.
[Try
on & meas for elbow length, medium size is sewn 15” down.]
FINISHING:
Use
#K hk & MC, work 1 row sc around entire edge.
Work
1 row sc with MC around Front edge & neck.
Hand
sew buttons on Front, evenly spaced, buttons are sewn back-to-back, on each
side, so Cape is reversible.
Button
holes are not made as sts are large enough to accommodate the button.
BELT:
Using
MC & #K hk, ch 72 [75, 78].
Follow
2nd, 3rd, & 4th rows of Cape patt [do not
inc] & use MC & CC.
Work
off sts, same as 4th row Border in cluster patt.
Follow
4th, 5th, & 6th rows of Border patt for 5
more rows, end with 3rd row of Cape patt [all sts off needle]. Last 3 rows are worked in MC. Fasten off.
Sew
Buckle to Belt at one end.
