Vintage Crocheted Cape & Cap Plus Size #374

This is an stylish variation on the cape theme in a delightful combination of popcorn stitch & double crochet design; with a matching cap.  The cape is worked in 3 different color strips & then strips are joined together with a 4^th color.  Worked in a solid color, this would be equaling charming.  Attractive & suitable for many occasions, it can be made up very quickly. 

SIZES:  Directions are for sizes 10 - 14 & 16 -20.   Changes for sizes 16 -20 will be shown in brackets.

Larger sizes can be achieved by increasing the size of the crochet hook used.

MATERIALS: 

Knitting Worsted Yarn, 4 Ply, 4 oz skeins: 2 [3] Color 1, 1 [1] Color 2, 1 [2] Color 3, 2 [2] Color 4

#8/H Aluminum Crochet Hook

7 Buttons, 7/8”

GAUGE:  4 dc = 1”;  2 dc rows = 1”: 

5 Popcorn sts with ch 2 bet each Popcorn st = 3”;   3 Popcorn st rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:  

Neck to hem:  32” [32“]; 

Width of hem from side seam to side seam:  35” [41“]

CAPE:  1^ST STRIP:  BOTH SIZES:  MOTIF 1:  1^ST ROW:  With color 1, ch 4, work 2 dc in 4^th st from hook.  3 Dc in row counting ch 3 as 1 dc.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in top st of turn ch 3; this completes Motif 1; do not break off.  5 Dc in last row counting ch 3 as 1 dc.

MOTIF 2:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 3 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same st as last sl st, do not work in rem sts.  3 Dc in last row counting ch 3 as 1 dc.

NOTE:  Ch 3 is always counted as 1 dc & will be referred to as 1 dc.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.

3^RD ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.  7 Dc in last row.

MOTIF 3:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc in same st as last sl st, do not work in rem sts.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc in each dc to within turn ch, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.  9 Dc in last row.

MOTIF 4:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc, do not work in rem sts.  7 Dc in last row.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Same as 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Motif 3.  11 Dc in last row.

MOTIF 5:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each dc to within last 3 dc & turn ch, 3 dc in next dc, do not work in rem sts.  9 Dc in last row.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Same as 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Motif 3.  13 Dc in last row. 

Rep last 3 rows [from 1^st row to end of 3^rd row of Motif 5] 3 times [both sizes] having 2 dc more in first row of each rep & 19 dc in last row of last rep.

MOTIF 9:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 2 dc in next dc, do not work rem sts.  15 Dc in last row.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in first dc, 1 dc in each dc to within turn ch, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.  19 Dc in last row. 

Rep last 3 rows [from 1^st row to end of 3^rd row of Motif 9] 9 times [both sizes];  break off at end of last row.

MOTIF 9:  FIRST HALF:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc; do not work over rem sts.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.

3^RD ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of first 7 dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

MOTIF 10:  FIRST HALF:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc; do not work over rem sts.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of first 6 dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

3^RD ROW:  Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, 1 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 dc in top st of turn ch.

MOTIF 11:  FIRST HALF:  1^ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

Rep directions from 2^nd row of Motif 9 to end of 1^st row of Motif 11; rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Motif 9 once more, ch 1; break off.

MOTIF 9:  SECOND HALF:  1^ST ROW:  Sk next dc after 1^st half, join yarn with sl st in next st, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc; do not work over rem sts.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Same as 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Motif 10.

MOTIF 10:  1^ST ROW:  Same as 1^st row of Motif 11.

Rep directions from 2^nd row of Motif 9 to end of 1^st row of Motif 11 once; rep from 2^nd row of Motif 9 to end of 3^rd row of Motif 10.

14^TH MOTIF:  JOINING ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch, pick up First Half & work 1 dc in ch-1 st, 1 dc in each of first 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc; do not work over rem sts.

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows of Motif 9 of First Strip.

Rep last 3 rows [from 1^st row to end of 3^rd row of Motif 9] 4 times; break off.

NOTE:  Using color 2 for small size & color 3 for large size make another 2^nd strip.

Work 9 [11] more strips same as 1^st strip as follows:  5 [6] more strips with Main Color; 1 [2] strips with color 2 [medium color]; 3 [3] strips with color 3 [dark color].

JOINING OF STRIPS:  1^ST ROW:  When joining strips be careful to have strip with slits for arm opening on 2^nd strip & next to last strip.  Having small motifs [at beg of strip] at top edge for neck edge & right side of last row of last motif at lower edge facing for all strips, join color 4 with sc over side at top of end st of 2^nd row of motif on left-hand side of color 3 strip, work down strip over end st of last row of each motif * ch 7, sk all rows bet, 1 sc over side at top end st of last row of next motif; rep from * down strip; break off.

2^ND ROW:  Do not turn, join color 4 with sc in first sc of last row, 3 more sc in same sc as first sc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first sc, pick up dropped loop & pull thru st, 1 sc over side at top of end st of 2^nd row of Motif 1 of color 1 [main color] strip, * ch 3, work a popcorn st in center st of next ch 7 loop of previous strip as follows:  [work 4 sc in center st of ch 7, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first sc of 4 sc group, pick up dropped loop * pull thru st], ch 3, a popcorn st in next sc of same strip, 1 sc over side top of corresponding st of 2^nd strip; rep from * down strip until all motifs are joined of last row of next motif of color 1 strip; rep from * down strip until all motifs of 2^nd strip [color 1 strip] are joined.

Working 1^st row of joining along opposite side of last strip, join color 2 strip to last color 1 strip in same manner.

Alternating strips of colors 2 & 3 & having a color 1 strip between all strips join all strips in same manner as first 2 strips in following color scheme, * next strip color 1; next strip color 3; next strip color 1; next strip color 2; rep from * until all strips are joined, for size 10-14 only end with a color 2 strip & last strip color 1; for size 16-20 end with a color 3 strip & last strip color 1.

NECKBAND:  [BOTH SIZES]:  1^ST ROW:  With wrong side of Cape facing [wrong side of joining rows are wrong side of Cape], join color 4 with sc in base of first Motif of the first strip of front, working along neck edge in base & over end sts of first motif of each strip work ch 3, 2-joined dc over top side edge of end st of first row of last motif worked in & corresponding st of 1^st row of first motif of next strip as follows:  [yo, insert hook over top side edge of end st of 1^st row of last motif worked in yo, pull loop thru st, yo & thru 2 loops on hook, insert hook over top side edge of corresponding st of first motif of next strip, yo pull loop thru st, yo & thru 2 loops on hook, yo & thru all 3 loops on hook], ch 3, 1 sc in base of same motif last worked in, * ch 3, work a 2-joined dc over top side edge of end st of same row at opposite side of last motif worked in & corresponding st of first motif of next strip, ch 3, 1 sc in base of last motif worked in; rep from * across row.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 2, turn, work a popcorn st in first sc, * ch 1, popcorn st in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, sk next 2-joined dc, popcorn st in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, popcorn st in next sc; rep from * across row, end with popcorn st in last ch-3 loop; break off.

3^RD ROW:  Do not turn, join color 4 with sc in top st of first ch 2, * ch 1, sk next popcorn st, popcorn st in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across row, end with 1 sc in last popcorn st.

4^TH ROW:  Do not turn, join color 4 with sc in first sc; rep from * work same as last row but end with 1 sc in last sc; break off.

RIGHT FRONT BUTTONHOLE BAND: [BOTH SIZES]:  With right side of cape facing, join color 4 with sc over end st of last row at lower edge of right front, working up right front edge over end sts of rows work 1 more sc over same st as first sc, work a hdc over end st of next row as follows:  [yo, insert hook in st, yo & pull loop thru st, yo & thru all 3 loops on hook], 1 more hdc over same st as last hdc, 2 dc over end st of next row, * work 2 sc over end st of 1^st row of next motif, 2 hdc over end st of next row of same motif, 2 dc over end st of next row of same motif; rep from * up front to within first motif of strip at neck edge, end with 2 sc over end st of each of 2 rows of Motif 1, 1 sc over end st of each row of neck edge.  110 Sts across row [both sizes].

2^ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, * ch 3, sk next 2 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in each of next 12 sc; rep from * 5 times, end with ch 3, sk next 2 sc, 1 sc in each rem sc.  [7 buttonholes].

3^RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc, 2 sc over ch-3 loop for buttonhole.

4^TH ROW:  Do not turn, ch 1, work a row of reverse sc as follows:  working across row in reverse by working from left to right, work 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * across row, end last rep with 1 sc in each of last 2 sts.

LEFT FRONT BUTTONBAND:  1^ST ROW:  With right side of Cape facing, join color 4 with sc over end st of last row of neck band of left front, working down left front edge over end sts of rows work 1 sc over end st of each of next 3 rows of neck band, 2 sc over end st of each of 2 rows of Motif 1 of strip, * 2 dc over end st of 1^st row of next motif, 2 hdc over end st of next row of same motif, 2 sc over end st of next row of same motif; rep from * down front.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st across row.

4^TH ROW:  Same as 4^th row for right Front buttonhole band; break off.

LOWER EDGE BAND:  [BOTH SIZES];  1^ST ROW:  With right side of cape facing, join color 4 with sc over end st of last row of Left Front button band, ch 1, popcorn st over end st of next row of band, ch 1, sk next row, popcorn st over next row, working along lower edge of cape * work popcorn st in first st of next strip, work [ch 1, sk next st of same strip, popcorn st in next st of same strip] 9 times, ch 1, popcorn st over end st of 1^st row of joining, ch 1, popcorn st in base of popcorn st of next row of joining, ch 1; rep from * across lower edge ending with popcorn st in first st of last strip, [ch 1, sk next st of same strip, popcorn st in next st of same strip] 9 times, ch 1, popcorn st over end st of 1^st row of Right Front band, ch 1, sk end st of next row of band, popcorn st over end st of next row, ch 1, 1 sc over end st of last row; break off.

BLOCK & FINISH:  Sew buttons in position on left front button band opposite buttonholes.

CAP:  1^ST RND:  [BOTH SIZES]:  With color 1, ch 4, join with sl st in first st of ch to form a ring, ch 1, work 8 sc into ring, join with sl st in first sc.

2^ND RND:  Do not turn in this or following rnds, ch 1, work a popcorn st in first sc, * work [ch 1, popcorn st, ch 1, popcorn st] all in next sc, ch 1, popcorn st in next sc; rep from * around, end with [ch 1, popcorn st, ch 1, popcorn st] all in last sc, ch 1, join with sl st in back of first popcorn st. 

There are 12 popcorn sts in last rnd [both sizes].

6^TH RND:  Ch 1, work [popcorn st & ch 2] in each ch-2 sp around, join with sl st in back of first popcorn st.
