Vintage 1958 Vogue Cotton Double-Breasted Bolero #193


News in cotton that you can knit as smoothly as you do wool.  It makes this very smart, double-breasted bolero in DMC Cotton Knitting Twist.

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14 & 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
DMC Knitting Twist, 4 [5, 5] pull skeins
I Pair each of #3 & #4 knitting needles
8 Buttons
1 yd 1” Grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 
13 sts = 2”;    
8 rows = 1”

PATTERN:  [Multiple of 3 sts plus 1].
1ST ROW:  P 1. * Yarn to back sl 1, yo, k 1, psso, p 1; rep from 8 across.

2ND ROW:  K 1, * p 2, k 1; rep from * across. 

Rep these 2 rows for pattern [patt].

BACK: 
With #3 needles, cast on 100 [106, 112] sts. 

K 14 rows in garter st [k every row]. 

Change to #4 needles & patt. 

Work even until 1 ½“ from beg. 

Inc 1 st each end; then every ¾” 5 times more; 112 [118, 124] sts. 

Work even until 7” [7”, 7 ½”] from beg. 

Place a marker in center of work.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every other row until 34 [36, 38] sts remain. 

Work even until armholes are 9 ¼” [9 ½”, 9 ¾”] from marker.  Sl sts on holder.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #3 needles, cast on 75 [78, 81] sts. 

K 14 rows in garter st. 

Change to #4 needles.

1ST ROW:  Work in patt across 19 [22, 25] sts, k 8, work in patt across 40 sts, k 8.

2ND ROW:  K 8, work in patt across 40 sts, k 8, work in patt across 19 [22, 25] sts. 

Rep these 2 rows throughout. 

Inc at arm edge only as for back; 81 [84, 87] sts. 

Work even until 7” [7”, 7 ½”] from beg. 

Place a marker in center of work. 

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE: 
At arm edge, bind off 3 sts. 

Dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 36 [38, 40] times; at the same time, when armhole is 4” [4 ¼”, 4 ½”] from marker,

SHAPE NECK: 
At front edge, sl 8 [9, 8] sts on holder; then bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 17 [17, 18] times.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to left front, reverse shaping & patt & work first double buttonhole 1” from beg.

DOUBLE BUTTONHOLES: 
Work 2 sts from center edge, bind off next 4 sts, work 44 sts, bind off next 4 sts, work to end of row.

NEXT ROW:  Cast on 4 sts over bound-off sts.  Work 3 more double buttonholes evenly spaced apart, have the last one at neck edge.

SLEEVES: 
With #3 needles, cast on 67 [70, 73] sts. 

K 14 rows in garter st. 

Change to #4 needles & patt. 

Inc 1 st each end every 4th row 10 [11, 12] times; 87 [92, 97] sts. 

Work even until 6” [6 ½”, 7“] from beg. 

Place a marker in center or work. 

SHAPE RAGLAN CAP: 
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every other row until 9 [10, 11] sts remain. 

Work even until cap is 9 ¼” [9 ½”, 9 ¾”] from marker. 

Sl sts on holder to be worked later.

FINISHING: 
Sew sleeves to back & front armholes; then sew sleeve & side seams.

NECKBAND: 
With right side facing, with #3 needles, pick up 138 [144, 150] sts around neck edge, including sts on holders. 

K 13 rows in garter st.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Block. 

Face front edges with grosgrain ribbon, cut thru for buttonholes. 

Buttonhole-st around buttonholes. 

Sew on buttons.
