Vintage 1954 Elegant Lace Shrug #1106

Styled for Spring!  This elegant shrug jacket was created by one of London’s topline designers.  It is made of simply crocheted circles, linked together with spiderlike motifs.  This charming shrug will appeal to every woman.  Made to dramatize a low-cut, black dress, or give an air of lacy charm to a white or delicate pastel frock.

MATERIALS:
Clark’s Tatting Cotton #2, 6 balls
Milward’s Steel Hook #2
1 Pair Knitting Needles #12

GAUGE:
1 Motif = 5”

MOTIF:
Ch 7, join into 1st ch with sl st to form ring.

1ST ROW:  Work 12 dc into ring, join with sl st.

2ND ROW:  Ch 6, * 1 tr in next st, ch 3, rep from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch at beg [12 spaces].

3RD ROW:  Work 1 htr, 3 tr, 1 htr in each sp around [12 scallops], join to 1st htr with sl st.

4TH ROW:  Ch 9, * 1 tr in sp bet next 2 scallops.  Ch 6 rep from * around, join to 3rd ch at beg, sl st to next tr.

5TH ROW:  Ch 3, * 6 tr in next sp, 1 tr in next tr, rep from * around, end with sl st to 3rd ch at beg, sl st to next tr.

6TH ROW:  Ch 3, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, * ch 2, sk next st, 1 tr in each of next 6 sts. [Be sure sp comes directly over tr post of 4th row.]  Rep from * around, end ch 2, sk 1 st, sl st to 3rd ch at beg.

7TH ROW:  Ch 3, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, * ch 3, 1 tr in each of next 6 sts, rep from * around, end ch 3, sl st to 3rd ch at beg.

8TH ROW:  Same as 7th row, having ch 4 bet tr groups.

9TH ROW:  Ch 1, 1 dc in each of first 2 trs of prev row, * ch 3 [picot], 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, 1 dc in each of next 3 tr, rep from * around, sl st to beg of row.  Fasten off.

Work 2nd motif in same manner, joining to 1st motif on 9th row as follows:

Work across to sp, 1 dc in sp, join to picot above sp on 1st motif by ch 1, sl st to picot, ch 1, 1 dc in same sp [on 2nd motif], 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, sl st to next picot on 1st motif, ch 1, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, join 3rd picot same as 1st, cont around motif with 9th row of patt.

Join 3rd motif in same manner, having 1 sp [3 picots] bet 1st & 3rd motifs.

Join 4th motif to 3rd, having 1 sp [3 picots] bet 4th & 2nd motifs, then join to 1st motif.

SPIDER:
[For large opening bet motifs.]
Ch 5, join in riing with sl st, * ch 7, sl st to picot above ch 4 sp of 8th row, ch 7, work 1 dc in ring, ch 7, sl st in next picot, ch 5, sl st to joining of motifs, ch 5, sl st to next picot [of next motif], ch 7, 1 dc in ring, rep from * 3 times more, fasten off.

HALF-SPIDERS:
[For sp bet motifs at outer edge.]
Ch 5, join in ring with sl st, ch 7, sl st to picot above 1st sp from joining of motifs [working from right to left], ch 7, 1 dc in ring, ch 7, sl st in next picot, ch 5, sl st to joining of motifs, ch 5, sl st to next picot [ of next motif], ch 7, 1 dc in ring, ch 7, sl st to next picot, ch 7 sl st in ring.  Fasten off.

Work 15 motifs in all, joining to prev motif on 9th row, having 5 motifs in length, 3 in width.

Work spiders centre sps & half-spiders at outer edge bet motifs.

RIBBING CUFFS:
With #12 needles, pick up & k 126 sts at each end of work [across 3 motifs].

Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, dec 38 sts across 1st row as follows:

Work across 6 sts, work next 2 sts tog, then every 2nd & 3rd st tog 37 times more [88 sts on needle].

When ribbing meas 4”, cast off loosely in ribbing.

Work ribbing at other end in same manner.

Sew seam of cuffs.
