1950s Suzanne Baby’s 3-Piece Sweater Set #B112

Quick & easy to crochet this delightful sweater with matching cap & bootees!

SIZE:  Infants to 6 months
Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

Materials:
4 oz 3-ply Baby Yarn
#3 Bone Crochet Hooks
Ribbon

SWEATER:  Yoke:             Start at neck edge, ch 85; 1 dc in 3rd st from hook & in each rem ch (83 sts & first ch make 84 sts), Ch 3, turn.

2nd row:  Make * 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across row (27 incs).  Ch 3, turn.

3rd row:  Make 1 dc in each st across row (111 sts).  Ch 3, turn.

4th row:  Make * 1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across row (27 incs).  Ch 3, turn.

5th row:  Make 1 dc in each st across row.  Ch 3, turn.

6th row:  Make * 1 dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across row (19 incs).  Ch 3, turn.

7th row:  Make 1 dc in each st across row (157 sts).  Ch 3, turn.

8th row:  Make * 1 dc in next 7 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * 17 times more (18 incs), dc to end of row.  Ch 3, turn.

9th row:  Make 1 dc in each st across row (175 sts).  Ch 3, turn.

Foundation row:  Make 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same place as last dc, * ch 2, sk 2 sts, into next st make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (shell); rep from * across row, end with shell in next to last st in row (58 shells in row).  Ch 3, turn.

SEparation:  Over first ch-2 sp make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (shell); * ch 3, sk next sp, into next sp make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (shell) *; rep bet *’s until you have completed 8 shells (front); ch 3, sk next 13 shells for sleeve; over next shell make shell; rep bet *’s until you have completed 16 shells for back; ch 3, sk next 13 shells for 2nd sleeve; ch 1, make shell over next shell, rep bet *’s across rem 7 shells. Ch 3, turn.

Next row:  * Make shell over ch-2 sp, ch 3, rep from * across row.  Ch 3, turn. 

Rep this last row until piece meas 6” from yoke.  Fasten off & break yarn.

SLEEVES:  Tie yarn in at underarm edge & work in shell patt as on body part until piece
meas 5” from edge of yoke.  Break yarn.

Sew up sleeve. 

Make other sleeve same way.

BEADING AT NECK EDGE:  Tie yarn at neck edge, ch 4, * sk 1 st, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, rep from * around neck edge.  Break yarn.

BONNET:  Start at center back, ch 3; join with sl st to form ring.  Make 6 sc into ring.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each st.

3rd rnd:  (Mark beg of rnd with colored thread as an aid in counting).  1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep around once.

4th rnd:  1 Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep around once.  Having 1 more st bet each inc, keep inc 6 sts on rnd until you have 12 sts bet each inc (84 sts).  Ch 1, turn.

Next row:  1 Sc in each of next 69 sts.  Ch 3, turn.

Next row:  1 Dc in first sc on row below, ch 2, 2 dc in same place as last dc made, * ch 2, sk 3 sts, into next st make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (shell); rep from * across 69 sts (18 shells).  Ch 3, turn.

Next row:  * Over ch-2 sp make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc; ch 2, sk next sp; rep from * across row. 

Rep this last row until you have made 4” of shell patt.  Break yarn.

Neck band:  Tie yarn at front edge, in top of turning ch-3, (working around neck edge of bonnet); ch 6, * 1 sc in side of next shell, ch 6, sk next shell; rep from * across shell rows (7 sps); ch 6, 1 sc in 2nd scan back of bonnet, ch 6, sk 3 sc, 1 sc in next st, ch 6, sk 3 sc, 1 sc in next st, ch 6, sk 3 sc, 1 sc in next st, ch 6, work across 2nd side of shells as before (18 sps in all).  Ch 1, turn.


Next row:  Over each ch-6 sp make 6 sc.  Break yarn.  Trim with ribbon.

BOOTIES:  Instep & Sole:  Ch 10, turn, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each of next 8 chs.  Ch 1, turn.  1 Sc in each of 9 sts. 

Rep this last row 7 times more (9 rows in all). 

Ch 35 for ankle; join with sl st to opposite corner, make 9 sc along side at instep, 9 sc across toe, 9 sc across 2nd side of instep, 1 sc in each of 35-chs (62 sc).  Mark beg of rnd. 

Work around in sc for 10 rows more.  Break yarn.

Top part:  Tie yarn in at 18th ch at back part of bootie.  Ch 4, 1 dc in same st, ch 2, 2 dc in same place as last dc, * ch 2, sk 3 sts, into next st make - 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (shell); rep from * around (11 shells).  Ch 4 turn. 

Work in same patt as on bonnet until you have made 2” of shell patt.  Break yarn. 

Sew up sole & back of bootie. 

Trim with ribbon. 

Make other bootie same way.
