1950s Evening Two-Piece Dress #200


Elegant two-piece, evening dress in a beautiful ribbon knit pattern.  The top is short-sleeved, with a delightful, low scooped neckline.  A successful addition to your multi-season wardrobe.

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Nomotta Chromspun Ribbon 4[4-5-5] 100-yd spools:
            Skirt:  15 [16-17-18] spools
            Blouse:  5 [6-6-7] spools
Nomotta Mothproof Festive  1-oz skeins: 
            Skirt: 12 [13-14-15] skeins
Nomotta Glint 100-yd spools
            Skirt:  10 [10-11-11] spools
1 Each #5 and #8 circular knitting needle- 24” length
1 Pair each #4 and #6 straight knitting needles
#6 Steel crochet hook
1 yd 1 ½” elastic

GAUGE:        
Skirt:  9 sts = 2”;  6 rnds = 1”.
Blouse:  11 sts = 2”; 13 rnds = 2”.

SKIRT PATT STITCH:
Rnds 1 thru 8:  With 1 strand each ribbon & yarn, knit.

Rnd 9:  With 1 strand each ribbon, yarn & Glint, knit.

Rnd 10:  * K 1, yo, repeat from * around.

Rnd 11:  * K 1, drop yo off needle to make along st; rep from * around.

Rnd 12:  Knit--drop Glint at end of rnd.

Rep rnds 1 thru 12 for patt.

BLOUSE PATT STITCH:  Multiple of 4 sts plus 3.

Rows 1 & 3:  Knit.

Row 2 & all even Rows:  Purl.

Row 5:  * K 3 tog; k in front, k in back, k in front of next st--3 sts in 1 st; rep from * end
 k 3 tog.  There will be 2 sts less on needle after this row.

Row 7:  K 3 sts in first st as on Row 5.  * K 3 tog, k 3 sts in next st; rep from * end K 3 sts in last st.  The 2 sts lost on Row 5 are added on this row.

Row 9:  Work same as Row 5.

Row 11:  Work same as Row 7.

Row 12:  Purl.

Rep these 12 rows for patt.

SKIRT: 
NOTE:  Skirt is worked 27” long.  Finished length is 30”, allowing 3” for blocking. 

To change length, work more or less rnds before first dec round.

With 1 strand each ribbon & yarn tog & #8 circular needle, cast on 520 sts.  Join, be careful not to twist sts.  Mark beg of rnds. 

Work straight in patt for 5” [7“-7“-7“]. 

On next rnd, * work 13 sts, slip a marker on needle; rep from * around:  40 markers.

Dec Rnd:  * Work to 2 sts before marker, k 2 tog;  rep from * around:  40 sts dec. 

Rep this dec rnd every 2” - 7[8-7-7] times more. 

Work straight on 200 [160-200-200] sts for 2”.

Second Dec Rnd:  Start at first marker, dec 1 st before every other marker around:  20 sts dec.

SIZES 12, 16 & 18 ONLY:  Rep 2nd dec round every 2” - 2[2-1] times more. 

ALL SIZES:  Work straight on 140 [140-140-160] sts until skirt measures 26”.

SIZES 12, 14 & 18:  Dec 14 [10-10] sts evenly spaced on the next rnd.

ALL SIZES:  Work straight on 126 [130-140-150] sts until skirt meas 27”.

BAND: 
Change to #5 circular needle & k 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1 ½”.  Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FINISHING: 
Press each piece lightly. 

Work 1 row of sc around lower edge. 

Sew elastic inside band.

BLOUSE:  NOTE:  The blouse will appear short before blocking.  Finished length is 20” [20“-21“-21“], allow 2” for blocking.

BACK: 
With #4 needles, cast on 72 [76-80-84] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 3”, inc 3 [7-3-7] sts evenly space across last row. 

Change to #6 needles & work straight in patt on 75 [83-83-91] sts for 12 rows. 

Inc 8 sts evenly space across next row. 

Work straight on 83 [91-91-99] sts for 11 rows more. 

Inc 12 [8-12-12] sts evenly space across next row. 

Work straight on 95 [99-103-111] sts until piece meas about 11” [11“-11 ½”-11 ½”], be sure not to end with rows that have 2 sts less.

ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 6 [7-7-7] sts at beg of next 2 rows & 2 sts at beg of next 6 [6-6-8] rows. 

Work straight on 71 [73-77-81] sts for 1”.

NECK: 
Work first 26 [27-29-31] sts & slip them on a holder, bind off center 19 sts, work last 26 [27-29-31] sts. 

Inc 1 st at arm edge every 6th row 4 times & dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 10 [11-11-11] times. 
Work straight if necessary on 20 [20-22-24] sts until armhole meas about 6” [6“-6 ½”-6 ½”].

SHOULDER
At arm edge bind off 8 sts twice & 4 [4-6-8] sts once. 

Work other side to correspond, reverse the shaping.

FRONT: 
Work same as back until 36 rows above ribbing have been completed:  95 [99-103-111] sts on needle. 

Rep rows 9 thru 12 of patt once more. 

Cont to work straight in patt until piece meas about 11 ½” [11 ½”-12“-12“], end with same row of patt as on back at underarm:  4 rows extra allowed for fullness at bust.

ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 6 [7-7-7] sts at beg of next 2 rows, & 2 sts at beg of next 6 [6-6-8] rows.

NECK:  Work first 26 [27-29-31] sts & slip them on a holder, bind off center 19 sts, work last 26 [27-29-31] sts. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times. 

Cont to dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 7 [8-8-8] times more, inc 1 st at arm edge every 6th row 4 times. 

Shape rem of armhole & shoulder as on back. 

Work other side to correspond, reverse the shaping. 

FINISHING: 
Press each piece. 

Sew underarm & shoulder seams, using a running back-st except for ribbing which is sewn with an overcast st. 

Work 1 row of 3-st picot around neck & arm edges.
