1950s Beaded Evening Dress #202

Elegant winter evening or cocktail dress in a beautifully detailed beaded knit pattern.  The bodice is short-sleeved, with a delightful, low scooped neckline.  The matching accordion pleated skirt completes an exquisite combination in ankle or cocktail length.  A successful addition to your wardrobe. 

SIZES:  Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Nomotta Mothproof Festive: 
Blouse - 18 [20-21-23] 1-oz skeins; 
Skirt - 16 [17-18-19] 1-oz skeins.
Nomotta Chromspun ribbon 4 [4-5-5] 100 yd spools
#1 & #2 Straight needles                           
#2 Circular needle - 24” length
#6 Steel crochet hook                                            
Two 60” strands of #6 pearls

GAUGE: 
Blouse:  7 sts = 1”;  11 rows = 1”:  
Skirt:  8 sts = 1”;  12 rnds = 1”

BLOUSE:   PATTERN STITCH:  Multiple of 12 sts plus 9 [3-9-3].

NOTE:  To transfer pearls to yarn, tie yarn to end of pearl strand & slip pearls onto yarn.  When starting a new skein, transfer pearls in same way.

1st row:  With ribbon, k 8 [11-2-5], * with ribbon in front sl next 5 sts as if to p--be sure to carry ribbon loosely across sl sts, k 7; rep from * across, end k 8 [11-2-5] instead of k 7.

2nd row:  With ribbon, p.

3rd row:  With yarn, k.

4th row:  With yarn, p.

5th & 6th rows:  Rep rows 1 & 2.

7th row:  With yarn k 10 [13-4-7], * sl a pearl close to needle, insert needle under 2 ribbon loops & k next st bringing pearl over loops to top at center of patt, k 11; rep from * end k 10 [13-4-7] instead of k 11.

8th row:  With yarn, p.

9th row:  With ribbon k 2 [5-8-11], rep from * of row 1, end k 2 [5-8-11] instead of k 7.
10th, 11th & 12th rows:  Rep rows 2 thru 4 once.

13th row:  Rep row 9.

14th row:  Rep row 2.

15th row:  With yarn k 4 [7-10-13], rep from * of row 7, end k 4 [7-10-13] instead of k 11.

16th row:  With yarn, p.

Rep these 16 rows for patt.

BACK:  With #2 needles & yarn, cast on 117 [123-129-135] sts. 

Work straight in st st for 1”, end with k row. 

K the next row for hemline. 

Work rows 1 thru 8 of patt, dec 1 st each side on last row. 

Start row 9 with k 1 [4-7-10] instead of k 2 [5-8-11] & row 15 with k 3 [6-9-12] instead of k 4 [7-10-13], work rows 9 thru 16 of patt, dec 1 st each side on last row. 

Work in new patt as established after each dec row, cont to dec 1 st each side every 8th row twice more. 

Work straight on 109 [115-121-127] sts for 6 rows.  Mark last row for waistline.

WAISTLINE:  Dec 1 st in center of each of 8 [8-10-10] groups of k sts bet sl sts. 

Change to #1 needles.  Work straight for 11 rows sl 4 sts instead of 5 when working patt. 

On next row, inc 1 st over dec at start of waistline:  8 [8-10-10] sts inc. 

Change to #2 needles & work in patt, inc 1 st each side every 8th row 6 times. 

Work straight on 121 [127-133-139] sts until  back measures 8 ½ [8 ½-9-9] ins above marker.  Mark this row for start of sleeves. 

SLEEVES:  Cast on 6 [6-7-7] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Inc 1 st each side every 12th row twice. 

Work straight on 137 [143-151-157] sts until sleeve measure 3 [3-3 ½-3 ½] ins above sleeve marker. 

NECK:  Work first 38 [41-44-47] sts & sl them on holder; tightly bind off center 61 [61-63-63] sts, work last 38 [41-44-47] sts. 

Cont to inc 1 st at sleeve edge every 12th  row twice more. 

Work straight on 40 [43-46-49] sts until sleeve measures 6 [6-6 ½-6 ½] ins above sleeve marker. 

SHOULDER:  Bind off 5 sts at sleeve edge 5 times & 5 [6-7-8] sts at 3 times. 

Work other side to correspond, reverse the shaping. 

FRONT:  Work to correspond to Back to start of sleeve shaping. 

Work straight on 121 [127-133-139] sts for 1 more in--extra length allow for bust fullness. 

Complete Front to correspond to Back.

FINISHING:  Press each piece lightly. 
Sew all seams using running back-stitch. 

Hem lower edge. 

With yarn work 1 row of sc on neck & sleeve edges.

ACCORDION PLEATED SKIRT: 
NOTE:  Skirt is worked in Cocktail length - 29”.  Finished length is 30”, allowing 1” for blocking.  To change length, work more or less rnds before first dec rnd.

With #2 circular needle, cast on 675 [700-725-750] sts.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.  Mark beg of rnds.

1st rnd:  * K 11, sl marker on needle; with yarn in back, sl 1 as if to p, k 11, p 2’ rep from * around; 27 [28-29-30] pleats.

2nd rnd:  * K 23, p 2; rep from * around.

Rep 1st & 2nd rnds until skirt measures 12”.  For long skirt, add desired additional inches.

Dec rnd:  Work to 3 sts before first marker; * k 2 tog, k 1, slip 1, k 1, k 2 tog, work to 3 sts before marker; rep from * around -- 54 [56-58-60] sts dec. 

Work in new patt as established after each dec rnd, rep this dec rnd every 2” 3 times more, every 1” twice. 

Work straight on 351 [364-377-390] sts for 1”. 

On next rnd, dec 2 sts as before in 15 [14-14-11] evenly spaced pleats. 

Work straight on 321 [336-349-368] sts for 2”. 

On next rnd, dec 2 sts in the 12 [14-15-19] pleats not dec on previous dec rnd. 

K in stockinette st on 297 [308-319-330] sts for 2”. 

On next rnd, dec 27 [28-29-30] sts evenly spaced on rnd. 

Rep this dec every 2” once more. 

Work straight on 243 [252-261-270] sts for 1”. 

Dec 23 [20-17-10] sts evenly spaced on next rnd. 

Work straight on 220 [232-244-260] sts until skirt measures 29”  bind off.
