1947 Classic Hat & Clutch Purse #240


Quick & easy to create, this classic two-tone hat & handbag duo
will become a seasonal favorite!

MATERIALS: 
HAT: 
Dritz Belastraw Art #110, 2 tubes Main Color [MC], 1 tube Contrasting Color [CC]
BAG: 
Dritz Belastraw Art #110, 2 tubes Main Color [MC], 1 tube Contrasting Color [CC]
#0 Steel Crochet Hook
Lining Material for Handbag
Zipper & Ornamental Zipper Pull

GAUGE: 
4 ½ sts = 1”

HANDBAG: 
With MC, ch 4.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1ST RND:  10 Sc in ring.  Mark last of each rnd.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc [20 sc].

3RD RND:  Sc in each sc [20 sc].

4TH RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc [inc].  Rep from * [30 sc].

5TH RND:  8 Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc [inc].  Rep from * [40 sc].

6TH RND:  Insert hook in next sc & pull loop thru, drop MC, pick up CC & pull CC thru 2 loops on hook [always change color in this way], * count back 2 sc, insert hook in base of next sc on last rnd & pull loop thru, insert hook in base of next sc [to the left] on next to last rnd & pull loop thru, sk 2 sc, insert hook in base of next sc on last rnd & pull loop thru, yo & draw thru all 4 loops on hook [flower st made], sk sc behind flower st, sc in next 4 sc.  Rep from * change color in last sc [40 sts in all, 8 flower sts].

7TH, 8TH & 9TH RNDS:  Sc around inc 7 sc on each rnd.

10TH RND:  Sc around inc 9 sc on rnd [70 sc].

11TH RND:  Rep 6th rnd [14 flower sts].

12TH TO 16TH RNDS:  Rep 7th to 11th rnds [100 sts in all, 20 flower sts].

17TH TO 21ST RNDS:  Rep 7th to 11th rnds [130 sts, 26 flower sts].

22ND TO 26TH RNDS:  Rep 7th to 11th rnds [160 sts, 32 flower sts].

27TH TO 31ST RNDS:  Rep 7th to 11th rnds [190 sts, 38 flower sts].

32ND TO 35TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc inc 5 sc on each rnd [210 sc].

36TH RND:  Rep 6th rnd [42 flower sts].

37TH & 38TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc.  End off & press.

END:  [MAKE 2]: 
With MC ch 15.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 12 ch, 5 sc in last ch; then work along other side of start ch make sc in 12 ch.

2ND RND:  Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc [top of End], sc in 14 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in 13 sc.

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  * Sc in each sc to center st of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc.  Rep from * twice; sc in each rem sc.  Sl st in next sc, end off.

5TH RND:  Attach yarn in 5th sc from center st of top of End, * sc in each sc to center st of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center st.  Rep from * once, sc in each sc to corres position of start of this rnd.  Sl st in next sc, end off.

Fold Bag in half. 

Pin Ends in place having bottoms of Ends at fold. 

Join by work sc thru both thicknesses. 

Work rnd of sc along edge of top opening. 

Line bag & insert zipper. 

Fasten ornamental zipper pull.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.  Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

HAT: 
Work same as Handbag until 36th rnd in complete.

37TH TO 40TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc, dec 5 sc on each rnd [190 sc].

41ST RND:  Rep 6th rnd [38 flower sts].

42ND RND:  Sc in each st.  End off. 

Mark off 8 flower sts.  Do not work over this area.  Attach MC & work short rows over rem area as follows:

1ST ROW:  * [Insert hook in next sc & pull loop thru] twice, yo, thru 3 loops on hook [dec made], sc in next sc.  Rep from *.   End off.

2ND ROW:  Attach yarn 2 sts to right of beg of last row.  * Sc in 2 sc, make dec.  Rep from * to 2 sts beyond end of last row.  Turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc across dec if necessary to desired head size. 

Turn & work 2 rnds of sc all around.  End off.
