1945 Woman’s Fancy Turban Hat & Bag #207

MATERIALS: 
Hiawatha Belastraw, 2 tube each of 2 colors
or Hiawatha Super Rayon Cord, 2 tubes each of 2 colors
Steel crochet hook #0 or bone crochet hook #3
Hiawatha rind #6223
2 - 6” Zippers
2 - 1 Yard pieces of ribbon, 8” wide [1 piece of each color] for lining
¼ Yard buckram for interlining

HAT: 
With light color, ch 26. 

1st row:  Dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, dc in same place, dc in next ch.  Repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in last ch [28 dc, counting turning ch as 1 dc].  Ch 4, turn.

2nd row:  Dc as base of ch-4, * sk 1 dc & ch-1, work dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same place.  Repeat from * across [28 dc].  Ch 3, turn. 

3rd row:  Dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same place, * sk next dc & ch-1, work dc, ch 1 & dc in next dc.  Repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-4. 
Ch 4, turn. [44 sts]. 

Repeat 2nd & 3rd rows until piece measures 6”.

Next row:  Work in pattern to 10 sts before end of row, work 1 group with hdc & 1 group with scs [instead of dcs].  Turn.  [This is top edge.]

Following row:  Sl st across 2 groups of previous row, work 1 group with scs.  1 group with hdc, continue pattern to end [bottom edge].  Chain & turn. 

Repeat last 2 rows until bottom edge measures about 10 ½”, ending at bottom edge. 

Turn;  work 1 row of sc to top.  Fasten off.

Attach dark color to bottom edge of starting chain, work 2nd half to correspond. 

Sew back seam loosely.

BAG
With light color, ch 18.

1st row:  Dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, dc in same place, dc in next ch.  Repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in last ch [28 dc, counting turning chain as 1 dc].  Ch 4, turn.

2nd row:  Dc at base of ch-4, * sk 1 dc & ch-1, work dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same place.  Repeat from * across [28 dc].  Ch 3, turn. 

3rd row:  Dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same place, * sk next dc & ch-1, work dc, ch 1 & dc in next dc.  Repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-4.  Ch 4, turn. 

Repeat 2nd & 3rd rows until piece measures 14”.  ch 1, turn. 

Next row:  Work sc in each ch-1 sp across.  Turn. 

Following row:  Sl st in each st across.  Fasten off. 

Make another piece in dark color.

FINISHING: 
Fold one crochet piece in half & sew last row to starting chain. 

Working over ring, work 1 sc very tightly in each st across top. 

Sew one side seam, leaving other side open for slide fastener. 

Cut two 15” pieces of ribbon & one piece of buckram 7 ½” x 14”. 

Fold buckram in half lengthwise & trim sides, tapering top edges to measure about 3 ½”. 

Make double lining of ribbon [with slide fastener in one side seam], inserting buckram, & shirring top to fit top of buckram..

Insert lining in bag & sew at all seams. 

Finish 2nd pouch in same way. 

Mark dark cord as follows:  with double thread, make a 15” chain, work sl st along chain. 

Sew ends of cord together. 

Make light cord in same way. 

Knot cords through top of ring, then knot them together as illustrated.
