Vintage 1941 Girl’s Ruffled Lace Party Dress #C102

Quick & easy to crochet this charming dress with it‘s matching hair ornament…lacy shell stitch pattern skirt with a lovely, loopy, ruffled yoke…perfect for very special occasions!

SIZE:  Directions are for size 2 to 4.  Instructions are for size 2 with changes for size 4 in brackets.  Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

MATERIALS: 
Clark’s ONT or J & P Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 30
SMALL BALL:
Clark’s ONT:  White 12 [15] balls, or Solid Color 18 [22] balls; & Multi-Color 8 [9] balls
J & P Coats:  White 9 [11] balls, or Solid Color 12 [15] balls; & Multi-Color 5 [6] balls
BIG Ball:
J & P Coats:  White 5 [6] balls, or Solid Color 6 [8] balls; & Multi-Color 3 [3] balls
3 Small Buttons
Ribbon Rosette Trim for Dress
1yd Matching Ribbon for Hair Ornament ¼” wide
#8 & #11 Steel Crochet Hooks

MEASUREMENTS:
Shoulder to bottom of skirt:  17” [19”]
Width at hem:  48” [53”]

GAUGE: 
For Dress:  1 patt [shell & cluster] = ½”;  4 rnds = 1”
For Yoke:  13 sts = 1”;  4 rows dc & 4 rows sc [8 rows total] = 1”

STITCHES:

SKIRT:  
Start at bottom of dress with solid color & #8 hook, make ch [11 ch sts = 1”] to meas 55” [60”].

1ST ROW:  Dc in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same place as last dc, * sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, in next ch make 2 dc with ch 2 bet [shell made].  Rep from * across until row meas 48” [53”], end with shell.  Join with sl st to top of turning ch at beg of row, be careful not to twist work.

Work is now done in rnds.
2ND RND:  Draw up loop on hook to meas ¼”, then make cluster around turning ch as follows:  * yo, insert hook from right to left behind turning ch, bring it out bet turning ch & next dc & draw loop thru.  Rep from * 2 more times, yo & draw thru all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 [cluster made].  ** Make shell in sp of next shell then make cluster around bar of single dc bet shells.  Rep from ** around.

3RD RND:  Work in same manner as for 2nd rnd, make cluster around cluster, & shell in sp of shell.   

Rep 3rd rnd until piece meas 11 ½” [13”].  Insert marker for beg of rnd. 

SHAPE ARMHOLES:  
Work across for front, for 23” [25”] from marker.  Fasten off.

NEXT ROW:  Attach thread at marker & work same as last row.  Fasten off. 

Rep last row until pieces meas 1 ½” from beg of armhole.  

Skip 4 shells with 3 clusters bet for armhole, attach thread, & work back in same way, leave opening for 2nd armhole to correspond.

YOKE:  
Start at outer edge of center back opening, with multi-color, & #11 hook, make ch to meas approx 32” [35”].

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook & in each ch across, dec 1 st after every 2 ½” [2 ¾”], until 10 sts have been dec.  [To dec st, work off 2 sts as 1.]

Now dc in each st across until outer [foundation edge meas 28 ½” [31 ½”].
Cut off rem ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Hold hook bet thumb & forefinger of left hand, wind thread twice around left forefinger, insert hook in 1st dc & under both loops just wound around forefinger, yo & draw loop thru 1st dc [2 loops left on hook], yo & draw thru both loops on hook [double-loop-sc made].  Make double-loop-sc in each st across.  Ch 3, turn.

Divide work into 6 equal sections & mark sections with pins.

3RD ROW:  Dc in each st across, dec 2 sts on 1st section [back section], 5 sts on next section [this is shoulder], 2 sts in each of next 2 sections [front], 5 sts in next section [other shoulder], & 2 sc in next section [other back section]--18 sc dec total.  Ch 1 turn.

4TH ROW:  Make double-loop-sc in each st across.  Ch 3, turn.

Rep 3rd & 4th rows until neck meas 12 ½” [14”], end with 4th row.  

Loop background should meas 3” in depth.

Work 1 row of sl st along neck edge.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:  
Press dress with hot iron thru damp cloth.  

Shirr [gather] top of skirt back & front, & sew to bottom of yoke as in photo.

Opening of yoke is at center back.  Leave approx 4” of yoke free at both sides for shoulders.

Work 3 buttonloops at right side of back opening.

Sew on ribbon rosette & buttons.

HAIR ORNAMENT [LOOPY ROSETTES]:  
With multi-color & #11 hook, make ch to meas 5”.

Work as for yoke, omit decs, for 6 rows [3 loop rows].  Fasten off.

Make one more like this.

Cut three 8” lengths of ribbon for across head.

Gather each rosette into circle & sew them to ends of ribbon.

Attach elastic.
