Vintage 1946 Modernistic Design Jacket #148


Fashion Note:  Wear this jacket with a skirt the same color as the contrasting lines and presto --  a trim little suit.

SIZE:  
12 [ 14, 16, 18 ]

MATERIALS:
Dritz Luxury Knitting Worsted 4 [ 4, 5, 5 ] 4 oz skeins, also a few yards of contrasting color.
Pair #4 knitting needles     
Pair #6 knitting needles
#1 Steel crochet hook        
7 Buttons      
Shoulder pads

MEASUREMENTS: 
Bust -- 32 [ 34, 36, 38 ]
Length from back of neck -- 22 [ 22 ½, 22 ½, 23 ] ins.
Side seam -- 14 [ 14, 14, 14 ] ins.
Sleeve seam -- 17 ½ [ 18, 18, 18 ½ ] ins.
Width of sleeve -- 13 [ 14, 14, 15 ] ins

GAUGE: 
5 ½ sts = 1 in;
7 rows = 1 in.

BACK: 
With #6 needles, cast on 78 [ 84, 90, 96 ] sts.

Work 4 rows of k 1, p 1 ribbing.

Then work in stockinette st, dec 1 st at both ends when Back measures 2 ins and every 1 in until 72 [ 78, 84, 90 ] sts remain.

Work straight until Back measures 5 ins. 

Change to #4 needles and work straight for 1 in.

Change to #6 needles, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row until there are 90 [ 96, 102, 108 ] sts.

Work straight until Back measures 14 ins in all.

ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 5 [ 6, 7, 8 ] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 72 [ 76, 80, 84 ] sts remain. 

Work straight until armhole measures 2 [ 2 ½, 2 ½, 3 ] ins.

Work 2 rows of contrasting color.

With main color work until armhole measures 4 [ 4 ½, 4 ½, 5 ] ins.

Work 2 rows of contrasting color.

With main color work until armhole measures 7 [ 7 ½, 7 ½, 8 ] ins.

SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 5 [ 6, 7, 8 ] sts at beg of next 2 rows and 6 sts at beg of following 6 rows.

Bind off remaining 26 [ 28, 30, 32 ] sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
With main color and #6 needles, cast on 44 [ 47, 50, 53 ] sts.

Work 4 rows of k 1, p 1, ribbing.

Then work in stockinette st dec 1 st at side edge when Front measures 2 ins and every 1 in until 41 [ 44, 47, 50 ] sts remain.

Work straight until Front measures 5 ins.

Change to #4 needles and work straight for 1 in.

Change to #6 needles inc 1 st at side edge on next row and every 6th row until there are 50 [ 53, 56, 59 ] sts.

Work straight until Front measures 14 ins in all.

ARMHOLE: 
Bind off 5 [ 6, 7, 8 ] sts at side edge once.

Dec 1 st at armhole edge on every other row until 41 [ 43, 45, 47 ] sts remain.

Work straight until armhole measures 2 [ 2 ½, 2 ½, 3 ] ins ending at front edge.

Next row:  With main color work across 12 sts, work remainder of row with contrasting color.

Following row:  With contrasting color work across to last 12 sts, work remainder of row with main color.
Work with main color until armhole measures 4 [ 4 ½, 4 ½, 5 ] ins, ending at front edge.

Next row:  With main color work across 24 sts, work remainder of row with contrasting color.

Following row:  With contrasting color work across to last 24 sts, work remainder of row with main color.

With main color work until armhole measures 6 [ 6 ½, 6 ½, 7 ] ins. Ending at front edge.

NECK: 
Bind off 18 [ 19, 20, 21 ] sts.

Work straight over remaining 23 [ 24, 25, 26 ] sts until armhole measures 7 [ 7 ½, 7 ½, 8 ] ins.

SHOULDER: 
Starting at armhole edge bind off 5 [ 6, 7, 8 ] sts once.

Starting at same edge bind off 6 sts every other row 3 times.

Place a pin in front edge of Left Front 6 ins up from lower edge; place another pin ½ in down from neck edge. 

Place 5 pins, evenly spaced between -- this is to mark position of 7 buttonholes on Right Front.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond with Left Front reversing shapings; when piece reaches 1st pin on Left Front, make a buttonhole as follows:

Starting at front edge, work across 2 sts, bind off next 2 sts, complete row.

Open next row, cast on 2 sts to replace those sts bound off.

SLEEVES: 
With main color and #6 needles cast on 38 [ 44, 44, 50 ] sts.

Work 4 rows of k 1, k 1 ribbing.

Change to stockinette st, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every 1 in until there are 70 [ 76, 76, 82 ] sts.

Work straight until Sleeve measures 17n ½ [ 18, 18, 18 ½ ] ins.

TOP:  Bind off 5 [ 6, 6, 7 ] sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 52 [ 56, 56, 60 ] sts remain.

Work straight until top measures 2 [ 2 ½, 2 ½, 3 ] ins.

Work 2 rows of contrasting color.

With main color work until top measures 4 [ 4 ½, 4 ½, 5 ] ins.

Work 2 rows of contrasting color.

With main color work 2 rows, then bind off 4 sts at beg of each row until 20 [ 24, 24, 20 ] sts remain.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Press pieces through a damp cloth.

Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew sleeves in, matching stripes.

Work a row of sc along front and neck edges.

Sew on buttons.

With contrasting color, work 2 rows of chain st on each front, working down from ends of stripes for 4 ins.

Sew in shoulder pads.

If desired, seam tape can be sewn on wrong side of waistline.
