Vintage 1934 Two-Piece Surplice Dress #426

Quick & easy to create, this two-piece dress with its light & airy crochet pattern, becoming surplice neckline, & slimming 6-gore skirt, will become a season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for town or country!

SIZE:  34 - 36

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-sheen, 13 balls of Main Color [MC], & 1 ball of Contrast Color [CC]
#3 Steel Crochet Hook
2 Snap Fasteners

GAUGE: 
3 triangles = 1”;   3 rows = 1”.


SKIRT: 
Beg at waist, ch 205, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, * ch 2, dc in same ch, sk next 2 ch, dc in next.  Rep from * make 10 triangles, ch 1, sk next 2 ch, dc in next, dc in next ch, ch 1 [start of gore patt].  Rep from * along ch, make 6 panels of 19 triangles each, end row with 2 dc tog, ch 3 [count as dc], turn.

2ND ROW:  Dc over next dc, ch 1, * dc in next triangle, ch 2, dc in same triangle.  Rep from * for 10 triangles, ch 1, dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1.  Rep from * to end of row, ch 3, turn.

3RD, 4TH & 5TH ROWS:  Cont with patt.

6TH RND:  Do not turn, cont work in rnds [1st 5 rows form an opening at side].

7TH RND:  Inc on this rnd.  To inc make 1 extra triangle on each side of gore -- that is, make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in ch-1 of prev rnd. 

Cont for 7 rnds , inc on next. 

* Cont for 8 rnds , inc on next.  Rep from * once. 

Cont for 10 rnds , inc on next. 

Cont for 15 rnds , inc on next. 

Cont without inc until 4 rnds less than desired length.

NEXT RND:  1 Dc in each triangle & dc in each dc. 

Next 3 rnds are dc in each dc.  Break off. 

BLOUSE:  BACK: 
Ch 115, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same ch, * sk 2 sts of foundation ch, dc in next, ch 2, dc in same ch.  Rep from * along ch [38 triangles].  Ch 3, turn.

2ND THRU 29TH ROWS:  Cont with patt. 

At end of 29th row, ch 1, turn.

30TH ROW:  Beg dec for armhole.  Sc in each st over 1st 2 triangles, ch 3, beg triangle over 3rd triangle & cont with patt across to within 2 triangles from end of row.  Ch 3, turn.

31ST ROW:  Dec 1 triangle at beg of row by dc in 1st triangle & triangle over next triangle.  Cont patt across, dec last triangle of row by 1 dc in last triangle.  Ch 3, turn.

32ND THRU 39TH ROWS:  Cont same with patt.

40TH ROW:  Dec 1st & last triangles of row.

41ST, 42ND & 43RD ROWS:  Cont same with patt.

44TH ROW:  Dec 1st & last triangles of row.

45TH, 46TH & 47TH ROWS:  Cont same with patt.

48TH ROW:  Dec 1st & last triangles of row.

49TH, 50TH & 51ST ROWS:  Cont same with patt.

52ND ROW:  2 Sc in each triangle.  Break off.

FRONT: 
Ch 94, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same ch, * sk 2 ch, dc in next, ch 2, dc in same.  Rep from * to end of ch [31 triangles], ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW:  * Dc in next triangle, ch 2, dc in same triangle.  Rep from * to within 1 triangle from end of row, then 1 dc in last triangle [a dec].  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  * Dc in next triangle, ch 2, dc in same triangle.  Rep from * to end, ch 3, turn.

4TH THRU 29TH ROWS:  Rep 2nd & 3rd rows alternately.

30TH ROW:  Dec for armhole.  Sc in each st over 1st triangle, ch 3, make triangle over 2nd triangle & cont patt, dec last triangle of row as done prev.  Ch 3, turn/\.

31ST THRU 44TH ROWS:  Same as 2nd row.

Work other Front side to correspond, & sew underarm seams.

FRONT BORDER:
1ST ROW:  Hold wrong side facing you, attach MC & make row of dc in sps, keep work flat [about 2 dc in each sp].  Break off, turn.

2ND & FOLLOWING ROWS:  Attach CC, & dc in each dc, but inc 1 dc at armhole edge, on each row.  Ch 3, turn. 

* Work another row MC, then attach CC & work 1 row.  Rep from * once. 

Break off.  Work other side to correspond.

SLEEVE: 
Ch 52, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same ch, * sk 2 ch, dc in next, ch 2, dc in same ch.  Rep from * to end of ch [17 triangles], ch 3, turn.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  Cont even with patt.

4TH ROW:  Inc 1 triangle at end of row.  [To inc, make 1 extra triangle in last triangle of prev row.]  Ch 3, turn.

5TH THRU 9TH ROWS:  Cont even with patt.

9TH THRU 18TH ROWS:  Rep 4th thru 8th rows.

19TH ROW:  Same as 4th row.

20TH & 21ST ROWS:  Work even.

22ND ROW:  Inc 1 triangle at end of row.

23RD THRU 46TH ROWS:  Rep 20th, 21st & 22nd rows.

47TH & 48TH ROWS:  Inc 1 triangle at end of row.

49TH ROW:  Work even.

50TH ROW:  Sc over 1st 3 triangles, ch 3 & make triangle in 4th triangle & in each triangle to within 3 triangles from end of row.  Ch 3, turn.

51ST THRU 64TH ROWS:  Work triangle over each triangle, but dec last triangle of each row.  [To dec--make 1 dc in last triangle].  Ch 3, turn.

65TH THRU 70TH ROWS:  Dec as prev done for Back at beg & end of each row.

BAND: 
Ch 25, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same ch, * sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2, dc in same ch.  Rep from * to end [8 triangles], ch 3, turn.

2ND & FOLLOWING ROWS:  Work patt until meas [stretched] your own meas, taken 2 ½” below natural waistline. 

Then dec 1 triangle at beg & end of last 4 rows. 

Sew Band to Blouse, with pointed end at right front, easing in Blouse as necessary. 

Sew up Sleeves, leave small opening to fasten with snap at wrist, & sew into Blouse. 

Hold right side of Blouse towards you, finish right front, neckline across back, & left front with row of sc.
