Vintage Girl’s Deep V-Neck Pinafore #C105

A clever woman will find it easy to quickly knit this charming pinafore with it‘s deep V neckline & accented with two front pockets…season-spanning & perfect for many occasions!

SIZE:  ‘
Directions are for size 4 - 6 - 8. 
Instructions are for size 4 with changes for sizes 6 & 8 in brackets.
Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

MATERIALS: 
Scotch Fingering Yarn, 3 Ply (1 oz skeins): 
8 skeins for Sizes 4 & 6; 10 skeins for Size 8
1 pair each #2 (2 3/4 mm) & #4 (3 1/2 mm) Knitting Needles

GAUGE: 
6 sts = 1”;    
8 rows = 1”

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS:  Sizes 4 [6, 8]:
Waist 22 1/2″ [24″, 25 1/2″]
Length from top of shoulder to lower edge of skirt 21 1/2″ [24 1/2″, 27 1/2″]
Width around lower edge of skirt 52″ [54″, 56″]


BACK: 
Start at lower edge of skirt with #4 needles, cast on 156 sts [162 sts, 168 sts].

Knit 1 row (wrong side).

Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row alternately), dec 6 sts evenly across every 6th row [7th row, 8th row] until there rem 66 sts [72 sts, 78 sts].

Work without dec until piece meas in all 11 1/2″ [13 1/2″, 15 1/2″], dec on last row to 64 sts [—, 76 sts].

Change to #2 needles & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1”, inc evenly across last row to 72 sts [76 sts, 80 sts].

Change to #4 needles & work in stockinette st until piece meas 1” from last row of ribbing.

Shape Armholes: 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st at both ends of each k row until there rem 58 sts [62 sts, 66 sts].

Work without dec until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 2″ [2 1/2″, 3″].

Inc 1 st at both ends of next row & every 6th row thereafter until there are on needle 72 sts [76 sts, 80 sts].

Work without inc until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 7 1/2 [8 1/2″, 9 1/2″].

Shape Shoulders: 
Bind off at beg of next 4 rows [2 rows, 6 rows] 8sts [8 sts, 9 sts].

Bind off at beg of next 2 rows [4 rows,—] 9sts [9 sts, —].

Bind off for back of neck rem 22 sts [24 sts, 26 sts].

FRONT: 
Work exactly as for Back to armhole shaping, end with purl row.

Next row:  Bind off 4 sts, knit across next 30 sts [32 sts, 34 sts] k 2 tog (center front).

Turn & work over last set of sts only, dec 1 st at armhole edge each row 3 times.

Keeping armhole edge straight, dec 1 st at center front edge on next row & every 6th row thereafter until there rem 26 sts [27 sts, 28 sts].

Work 5 rows without dec.

Next row:  Dec 1 st at center front edge & inc 1 st at armhole edge.

Rep last 6 rows 6 more times.

Keep armhole edge straight & make 1 more dec at center front edge as before, work until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 7 1/2″ [8 1/2″, 9 1/2″].

Shape Shoulder: 
Start at armhole edge, bind off every other row 8sts [8 sts, 9 sts] twice [once, 3 times].

Bind off at armhole edge every other row 9sts [9 sts, —] once [twice, —].

Attach yarn where sts were divided & work over rem 36 sts [38 sts, 40 sts] to correspond, reverse shapings.

POCKET (Make 2): 
Start at upper edge, cast on 23 sts [25 sts, 27 sts].

Knit 1 row (wrong side).

Work in stockinette st for 3”. 

Dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 3 sts rem, k 3 tog.  Break off.

FINISHING: 
Block pieces to measurements.

Sew side & shoulder seams.

Sew pockets 1” below waistband & ½” from side seams.

Face armhole & neck edges.

Trim pockets if desired.
