Vintage Baby’s Snow Suit 4-Piece Set #B-142

This appealing 4-piece set of cardigan sweater, leggings, cap & mittens is created with an easy & attractive pattern.

SIZE:
Directions are for 6 months to 1 year. 

MATERIALS:
American Thread Co Dawn Knitting Worsted, Art #W11, 1 ¼ oz, 11 skeins
Pair Bone Knitting Needles #3
Pair Bone Knitting Needles #4
4 Double-Pointed [dp] Bone Knitting Needles #3 for mittens
9 Small Buttons

Pattern requires multiple of 6 sts plus 2.

1ST ROW:  K 3, p 2, * k 4, p 2, rep from * across row, ending row with k 3.

2ND ROW:  P across row.

3RD ROW:  P 2, * k 4, p 2, rep from * across row.

4TH ROW:  P across row.

Rep these 4 rows for patt.

LEGGINGS:
LEFT SECTION:
Start at waist on #3 needles, cast on 68 sts & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1”.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, yo, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, ending row with k 2 [beading].

Work 1 more inch of ribbing.

NEXT ROW:  Start shaping back, k 2, p 2, k 2, turn, p 2, k 2, p 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  Work across 12 sts in same manner, turn & work back in ribbing to end of row.

3RD ROW:  Work across 18 sts in same manner, turn & work back in ribbing to end of row.

4TH ROW:  Work across 24 sts in same manner, turn & work back in ribbing to end of row.

5TH ROW:  Work across all sts in ribbing.

Change to #4 needles.

NEXT ROW:  Start patt & work 6 ½” even in patt.

NEXT ROW:  Dec 1 st each side, keep patt straight, then dec 1 st each side every 3rd row 12 more times, keep patt straight.

Work 8 rows even.

Work 3” even in ribbing of k 2, p 2.

NEXT ROW:  K across 27 sts, turn, k 14 sts, turn & k 14 rows on 14 sts for instep.

Pick up & k 10 sts on side of instep just made & 13 sts on needle, turn, k 37 sts, pick up & k 10 sts on other side of instep & 13 sts left on needle.

K 8 rows even, bind off.

RIGHT SECTION:
Work ribbing & beading same as left section.

Work 5 rows of shaping for back same as left section.

6TH ROW:  Work even in ribbing, ending on right side.

NEXT ROW:  Start patt & work same as left section, break yarn.

FINISHING:
Sew front & back seams, then sew leg seams.

Sew elastic for underfoot.

Crochet chain about 36” long.

Lace thru beading & finish with tassels.


SWEATER:
Use #3 needles, cast on 50 sts.

Work in ribbing for 3”.

Change to #4 needles.

Work in patt same as leggings, until work meas 9” from beg.

Then inc 1 st each side, every other row, 4 times, keep patt straight.

NEXT 2 ROWS:  Cast on 26 sts at beg of each row for sleeves, & work even in patt for 2 ½”.

NEXT ROW:  Work 48 sts, place these on st holder, bind off next 14 sts for back of neck, & work on rem 48 sts for left front.

NEXT 3 ROWS:  Dec 1 st at neck edge each row, then work 8 rows even.

NEXT 3 ROWS:  Inc 1 st at neck edge each row.

Cast on 7 sts for front of neck & work even in patt until sleeve meas 6 ½” at wrist edge.

Bind off 26 sleeve sts & dec 1 st every other row at underarm 4 times.

Work even in patt until front meas same as back to ribbing, inc 1 st in last row.

Work ribbing same as back, bind off.

Work other shoulder & front to correspond.

CUFFS:
With #3 needles, pick up 30 sts at wrist edge & work in ribbing for 3”, bind off.

COLLAR:
With #3 needles, pick up 72 sts around neck & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for about 3”, bind off.

Sew sleeve & side seams.

With wrong side of work facing you, crochet 60 sc up left front of sweater, turn & work 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  1 Sc in next sc, * ch 2 for buttonhole, sk 2 sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, rep from * up front, ending with 1 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  1 Sc in each sc & 1 sc in each st of ch, break yarn.

Work 4 rows of sc on right front in same manner, omit buttonholes.

Sew buttons in position.

CAP:
On #4 needles, cast on 4 sts, & work in ribbing of k 1, p 1.

2ND ROW:  Inc 1 st at beg & end of row, then inc 1 st each end, every 6th row until there are 14 sts on needle. 

Work 6 rows even, break yarn, leaving work on needle.

Cast on 4 sts on same needle, & work 2nd tab to correspond [both tabs on 1 needle in last row], do not break yarn.

Cast on 11 sts & work in ribbing across cast on sts & 1 tab, cast on 22 sts & work across 2nd tab, cast on 11 sts & work in ribbing across all sts until front meas 1 1/4”.

NEXT ROW:  * K 4, p 2, rep from * across row.

NEXT ROW:  P across row.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * p 2, k 4, rep from * across row, ending row with k 3.

NEXT ROW:  P across row.

Rep last 4 rows until patt section meas 3”, ending with p row & dec 1 st in last row.

Remainder of cap is worked in stockinette st [k 1 row, p 1 row].

SHAPE CAP:
1ST ROW:  * K 5, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, end with k 1.

NEXT & EVERY OTHER ROW:  P across row.

3RD ROW:  * K 4, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, end with k 1.

5TH ROW:  * K 3, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, end with k 1.

7TH ROW:  * K 2, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, end with k 1.

9TH ROW:  * K 1, k 2 tog, rep from * across row, end with k 1.

11TH ROW:  K 2 tog across row.

P 1 row, then break yarn, leave end for sewing.

FINISHING:
Thread yarn into needle, sl rem sts on yarn, draw tog & fasten firmly.

Press under damp cloth.

Sew back seam.

Crochet row of sc all around, work 4 ch lp at end of 1 tab for buttonhole.

Sew button in position.


MITTENS:
With #3 needles, cast on 36 sts, [12-12-12] work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 ½”.

K 4 rnds even.

NEXT RND:  K 3, inc in next st, k 1, inc in next st, k rem of rnd, then k 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  K 3, inc in next st, k 3, inc in next st, k rem of rnd, then k 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  K 3, inc in next st, k 5, inc in next st, k rem of rnd, then k 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  K 3, place next 8 sts on safety pin or thread for thumb, cast on 2 sts over thumb, k 7 sts, complete rnd.

K even until mitten meas 3 ¾” from beg.

NEXT RND:  * K 4, k 2 tog, rep from * all around.

K 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  * K 3, k 2 tog, rep from * all around.

K 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  * K 2, k 2 tog, rep from * all around.

K 1 rnd even.

NEXT RND:  K 2 tog all around.

K 1 rnd even, break yarn & leave long end.

Thread yarn into needle & draw 9 sts tog, fasten firmly on wrong side.

THUMB:
Pick up & k 8 thumb sts, 1 st on each side of cast on sts & 2 cast on sts, [12 sts in all] arrange on 3 needles.

K even for 1 ¼”.

NEXT RND:  K 2 tog all around.

K 1 rnd even, break yarn & leave long end.

Finish same as top of mitten.

Work other mitten in same manner.
