Vintage 1944 Starlight Crochet Doily

A clever woman very quickly & easily will crochet this exquisite doily…which will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Tatting Cotton, Size 70, 4 Balls of white
#13 Steel Crochet Hook

MEASUREMENT: 
11” diameter

Starting at center, ch 10, join with sl st.

1ST RND:  16 sc in ring, sl st in 1st sc made.

2ND RND:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around, end with ch 5.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in ch-5 sp, ch 5.  Rep from * around.

4TH THRU 17TH RNDS:  * Sk 1st sc, sc in each rem sc of sc group, 2 sc in ch-5 sp, ch 5.  Rep from * around; on 17th rnd end with the 17 sc of last group.

18TH RND:  Ch 5, * sk 1 sc, sc in next 15 sc, ch 5, sc in ch-5 sp, ch 5.  Rep from * around.

19TH RND:  * Sk 1 sc, sc in next 13 sc; (ch 5, sc in next lp) twice; ch 5.  Rep from * around. 

Cont in this manner, having 2 sc less in each sc group & 1 lp more bet sc groups on each rnd, until 1 sc rem in each sc group, & end with ch 5, sc in lp preceding 1st sc.

Now work as follows: 26TH THRU 30TH RNDS:  * Ch 6, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around (72 lps).

31ST RND:  Make ch-6 lps across to within lp directly above last sc of point, * ch 6, 9 dc in next lp; ch 6, sc in next lp.  Make 7 more ch-6 lps.  Rep from * around (1 group of 9 dc directly above each point).

32ND RND:  * Make ch-6 lps to within next dc group, ch 6, sk 4 dc of group, sc in next dc, ch 6, sc in next lp.  Rep from * around.

33RD & 34TH RNDS:  Ch-6 lps around, end with sc.

35TH RND:  Ch 5, * 2 hdc in next lp, ch 3.  Rep from * around, end with ch 3, hdc in last sc, sl st in 2nd ch of ch-5 (80 ch-3 sps).

36TH RND:  Ch 2, * 2 hdc in sp, hdc in next 2 hdc.  Rep from * around, end with sl st in 2nd ch of ch-2 (320 hdc).

37TH RND:  Ch 1, * sc in next 17 hdc, ch 4, sk 4 hdc, in next hdc make 2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc (shell); ch 4, sk 4 hdc.  Rep from * around, but sk 5 hdc (instead of 4) before & after any 4 shells in rnd (12 groups of 17 sc, with shell bet each group).  Join with sl st in 1st sc. 

Hereafter pick up only back lp of each sc throughout.

38TH RND:  * Make sc in next 15 sc, ch 4, in ch-2 of shell make (2 dc, ch 2) 3 times & 2 dc.  Ch 4, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

39TH RND:  * Sc in next 13 sc, ch 4, in next ch-2 sp make shell of 2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc; ( ch 3, shell in next ch-2 sp) twice, ch 4, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

40TH RND:  * Sc in next 11 sc, ch 4, shell over next shell, ch 3; in next shell make (2 dc, ch 2) 3 times & 2 dc. Ch 3, shell over next shell, ch 4, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

41ST RND:  * Sc in next 9 sc, ch 5, shell over next shell, ch 3; (shell in next ch-2 sp, ch 2) twice; shell in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, shell over next shell, ch 5, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

42ND RND:  * Sc in next 7 sc, ch 5, shell over next shell, ch 3, shell over next shell, ch 3.  In ch-2 of next shell make (2 dc, ch 2) 3 times & 2 dc; (ch 3, shell over next shell) twice, ch 5, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

43RD RND:  * Sc in next 5 sc, ch 5, shell over next shell, ch 4, shell over shell; ( ch 3, shell in next ch-2 sp) 3 times; ch 3, shell over next shell, ch 4, shell over next shell, ch 5, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

44TH RND:  * Sc in next 3 sc, ch 5, shell over next shell, ch 4; (shell over next shell, ch 3) twice; in next ch-2 sp make (2 dc, ch 2) 3 times & 2 dc; (ch 3, shell over next shell) twice; ch 4, shell over next shell, ch 5, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

45TH RND:  * Sc in next sc, ch 5, (shell over next shell, ch 4) 3 times; ( shell in next ch-2 sp, ch 3) twice; shell in next ch-2 sp; ( ch 4, shell over next shell) 3 times; ch 5, sk 1 sc.  Rep from * around; join.

46TH RND:  Sl st to ch-2 sp of first shell, ch 8, sl st in 4th ch from hk (ch-4 picot made), ch 1, dc in same sp as last sl st was made, * ch 2, sc in next sp bet shells, ch 2, in sp of next shell make dc, ch 1, p, ch 1 & dc.  Rep from * across one point, end with dc, ch 1, p, ch 1 & dc in last shell of point, sk ch-5, sc & next ch-5, dc in sp of next shell, ch 1, p, ch 1, dc in same sp as last dc & cont thus around.  Join last dc with sl st to 3rd st of ch-8.  Break off.
