Vintage 1944 Rose Trellis Placemat & Runner Crochet Set 

A clever woman very quickly & easily will crochet this exquisite table setting…which will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats or Clarks ONT Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 50
16 Small Balls Clarks ONT, or 11 balls J & P Coats
#12 Steel Crochet Hook
The above amount of material is sufficient to make 4 place mats [each 11” x 16 ½”] & a runner [11” x 22”].

MEASUREMENTS: 
Place Mats measure 11 x 16 ½”
Runner measures 11 x 22”

PLACE MAT: (Make 4) 
MOTIF: 
Ch 8.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 6 (to count as tr & ch 1), (tr in ring, ch 1) 15 times, sl st in 5th st of starting ch-6 (16 sps).

2ND RND:  Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next tr.  Rep from * around, sl st in 1st sc (48 sc).

3RD RND:  Ch 3 (to count as 1 dc), dc in next sc, * ch 2, sk next sc, dc in next 2 sc.  Rep from * around, join last ch-2 with sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-3.

4TH RND:  Sl st bet ch-3 & dc, ch 6, dc in same place as last sl st, * sk next sp, bet next 2 dc make dc, ch 3 & dc.  Rep from * around.  Join.

5TH RND:  Ch 1, sc in same place as last sl st, * 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc bet next 2 dc.  Rep from * around.  Join (64 sc).

6TH RND:  Ch 7, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc, ch 4, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc, * ch 4, sk 3 sc, in next sc make dc, ch 4 & dtr; sk 3 sc, in next sc make dtr, ch 4 & dc, (ch 4, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc) twice.  Rep from * around, end with dtr in base of starting ch- 7, ch 4, sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-7.

7TH RND:  Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next sc, * ch 4, dc in next sc (bar made), ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet made), 6 dc in next sp, sk next dtr, in next dtr make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc, 6 dc in next sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next sc (another lacet made).  Rep from * around, end with 6 dc in last sp, join with sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-5.

8TH RND:  Ch 7, dc in next dc, * ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet made over bar), ch 4, dc in 10 dc, in corner ch-5 sp make 2 dc, ch 5 & 2 dc; dc in next 10 dc, ch 4, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet).  Rep from * around, end with dc in last 9 dc.  Join.

9TH RND:  Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet), * make bar over next lacet & lacet over next bar, dc in each dc to next corner, in corner ch-5 sp make 2 dc, ch 5 & 2 dc; dc in each dc of next dc group, make lacet over next bar.  Rep from * around.  Join.

10TH RND:  Ch 7, dc in next dc (bar), * make 1 lacet & 1 bar, ch 2, sk next dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next dc, dc in next dc (lacet made), ch 4, sk 4 dc, dc in next dc (bar made); make 1 lacet, in corner ch-5 sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc; make (1 lacet, 1 bar) twice.  Rep from * around.  Join.

11TH RND:  Make (1 lacet, 1 bar) 3 times; * dc in 3 dc, in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc; dc in 4 dc, (1 bar, 1 lacet) 4 times; 1 bar.  Rep from * around.  Join.

12TH RND:  Make (1 bar, 1 lacet) 3 times; * dc in each dc to corner sp, in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 & 3 dc; dc in each dc of next dc group, (1 lacet, 1 bar) 4 times; 1 bar.  Rep from * around.  Join.

13TH RND:  * Make (1 lacet, 1 bar) 4 times; turn corner as before, (1 bar, 1 lacet), twice; 1 bar.  Rep from * around.  Join.

14TH & 15TH RNDS:  Make bar over lacet & lacet over bar, work corners same as on 11th & 12th rnds.

16TH RNDS:  * Make (1 bar, 1 lacet) 5 times; turn corner as before, (1 lacet, 1 bar) 3 times; 1 lacet.  Rep from * around.  Join.

17TH RND:  Make lacet over bar & bar over lacet, work corners same as on 11th rnd.

18TH RND:  Ch 7, dc in next dc, (ch 4, dc in next dc) 9 times; * turn corner as on 12th rnd, (ch 4, dc in next dc) 17 times.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off. 

Make 5 more motifs.

Sew 2 x 3 motifs tog with neat over & over sts.

EDGING: 
1ST RND:  Attach thread in corner sp, ch 1, 5 sc in sp, sc in each dc, (3 sc in next sp, sc in next dc) 17 times; sc in each dc, 2 sc in corner sp, sc in joining of motifs, 2 sc in next corner sp.  Cont thus around.  Join.

2ND RND:  Sl st in next 2 sc, ch 6, in same place as sl st make (dc, ch 3) twice & dc; * sk 3 sc, in next sc make dc, ch 3 & dc.  Rep from * across to next corner of mat, in corner sc make (dc, ch 3) 3 times & dc.  Cont thus around.  Join.

3RD RND:  Ch 6, dc in same place as sl st, (dc, ch 3 & dc in next dc) twice; * sk ch 3 & 1 dc, in next dc make dc, ch 3 & dc.  Rep from * across to next corner.  Work corner as before.  Cont thus around.  Join.

4TH RND:  Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, 4 sc in each sp around.  Join.

RUNNER: 
(Make 8 motifs):
Sew 2 x 4 motifs tog. 

Finish with Edging same as Edging on Place Mats.

Starch lightly. 

Pin out to measurements given & press.
