Vintage Mod 1960s Tweed Sweater Jacket #1166
SIZE:
Directions are given for Size 12.
Changes for Sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
Coats & Clarks Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 4 Ply, 1 oz Skeins: 13 (15, 16, 18) Skeins of Purple
and
Coats & Clarks Red Heart Nylon, 3 Ply, 1 oz Skeins: 4 (4, 5, 5) Skeins each of Pink & Orchid
1 Pair Knitting Needles #10½
4 Buttons

GAUGE:
3 sts = 1”
4 rows = 1”

NOTE:
The tweed effect of casual jacket is created by working 3 strands of yarn in simple stockinette stitch (st st).

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust – 32” (34”, 36”,38”)
Buttoned Bust – 36” (38”, 40”, 42”)
Width Back at Underarm – 18” (19”, 20”, 21”)
Width Each Front at Underarm – 8 ½” (9”, 9 ½”, 10”)
Length Side Seam – 10” (10”, 10 ½”, 10 ½”)
Length Back of Neck to Lower Hem – 21” (21”, 22”, 22”)
Sleeve Depth – 10” (10”, 10 ½”, 10 ½”)
Width  Across Back & Both Sleeves – 22” (23”, 24”, 25”)

BACK:
Start at lower edge with Purple, cast on 55 (57, 61, 63) sts. 

1ST ROW: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Rep from * across. 

2ND ROW: P 1, * k 1, p 1. Re­p from * across.

Rep last 2 rows for 3”.

Place marker on last row to indicate hemline.

Attach Pink & Orchid, & use all 3 strands of yarn, cont in ribbing as before' for 3”.

Now, work in st st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until length from hemline is 10” (10”, 10½”, 10½”), end with p row.

SLEEVE SHAPING:
Inc one st at both ends of next row & every 6th ow ­after, until 6 sts are inc for each sleeve.

Work even across these 67 (69, 73, 75) sts until length from 1st row of sleeve shaping is 10” (10”, 10½”, 10½”), end with p row.

SHOULDER & NECK SHAPING:
NEXT 4 ROWS: Bind off 2 sts, compl row. 

5TH ROW: Bind off 2 sts, k across until there are 22 (23, 24, 25) sts on right-hand needle.

Place rem 35 (36, 39, 40) sts on st holder to be worked later.

Work over sts on needle only, bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 2 (3, 2, 3) sts rem. Bind off.

Leave center 11 (11, 13, 13) sts on st holder, place rem 24 (25, 26, 27) sts on needle, attach yarn at neck edge & work to corres with other side.

LEFT FRONT:
Start at lower edge with Purple, cast on 25 (27, 29, 29) sts.

Work as for Back, inc 1 st on Sizes 12 & 18 only, on last row of ribbing.

Work in st st across these 26 (27, 29, 30) sts until length is same as Back to Sleeve Shaping, end with p row - side edge.

SLEEVE SHAPING:
Inc one st at beg of next row & every 6th row after, until there are 32 (33, 35, 36) sts on row.

Work even until length from 1st row of sleeve shaping is 10” (10”, 10½”, 10½”), end at sleeve edge.

SHOULDER & NECK SHAPING:
1ST ROW: Bind off 2 sts, work across. 

2ND ROW: Work across.

Rep last 2 rows once. 

5TH ROW: Bind off 2 sts, work next 22 (23, 24, 25) sts.

Place rem 4 (4, 5, 5) sts on st holder to be worked later.

Now bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 2 (3, 2, 3) sts rem. Bind off rem sts.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work as for Left Front, reverse shaping.

NECKBAND:
Sew shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing & all 3 strands of yarn, pick up & k around entire neck edge, incl sts on holders 69 (69, 73, 73) sts.

Work in ribbing as before for 3”.

Place marker on last row to indicate hemline.

Break off Pink & Orchid.

With Purple only, cont in ribbing for 3”.

Bind off very loosely in ribbing.

RIGHT FRONT BAND:
With right side of work facing & all 3 strands of yarn, start at lower hemline, pick up & k along Right Front Edge to neck hemline 76 (76, 80, 80) sts.

Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for ¾”.

With pins mark position of 4 buttonholes evenly spaced on band, have 1st pin 1 ½” above lower edge & last pin 1½” below neck edge.

BUTTONHOLES:
1ST ROW: (Work in ribbing to next pin, bind off 4 sts) 4 times; compl row. 

2ND ROW: Work in ribbing across, cast on 4 sts to replace each set of bound-off sts.

Cont in ribbing until width of Band is 1½”.

Place marker on last row to indicate hemline.

Break off Pink & Orchid.

With Purple only, cont in ribbing for ¾”.

Now work 4 buttonholes as before.

Cont in ribbing until width from hemline is 1½”.

Bind off very loosely in ribbing.

LEFT FRONT BAND:
Work as for Right Front Band, omit buttonholes.

CUFFS:
With right side of work facing, & all 3 strands of yarn, pick up & k along entire sleeve edge 64 (64, 68, 68) sts.

Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 6”.

Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FIINISHING:
Block to measurements.

Sew side & cuff seams.

Turn all hems at hemlines to wrong side & sew in place.

Work but­tonhole st around buttonholes.

Sew buttons in place.

Fold cuffs in half & turn up on right side.
