Vintage 1943 Chic & Classique Clutch #381

MATERIALS: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 4 balls any color
#1 Steel Crochet Hook
4 ½ yds of Grosgrain Ribbon, 1” wide
½ yd each Buckram & Lining Material
2 Plain Plastic Bracelets
2 Large Buttons, 1 ½” diameter

Use a triple thread throughout.

Starting at one short side, make a ch 12 ½” long.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND TO 8TH ROWS:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn. 

Ch 5 to turn at end of 8th row.

9TH ROW:  Dtr in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

10TH ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 5, turn. 

Rep 9th & 10th rows alternately until 4 rows of dtrs are made. 

Work 3 more rows of sc.  Fasten off.

Attach a triple thread to 7th sc from end of prev row & make sc in each sc across to within last 6 sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work over last row of sc for 14 more rows. 

Ch 7 to turn at end of 14th row.  Then work as follows:

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in next 5 ch, sc in each sc across, drop this thread, attach triple thread to 1st sc of prev row & ch 6.  Fasten off. 

Pick up dropped thread & make sc in next 6 ch.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work 2 more rows of sc. 

Ch 5 to turn at end of 3rd row. 

Now alternate 9th & 10th rows as before until 5 more rows of dtr are made. 

Work 3 more rows of sc & fasten off.

Attach triple thread to 7th sc from end of last row & work sc in each sc to within last 6 sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work 1 more row of sc. 

Now work a dtr row. 

Rep the last 2 rows once more. 

Work 2 more rows of sc.  Fasten off. 

Lace ribbon thru dtr rows & sew ends on wrong side.

LINING: 
Cut a piece of buckram slightly smaller than crocheted piece & tack on wrong side. 

Cut a piece of lining material ½” larger on all sides than crocheted piece. 

Cover buckram with lining material & turn all edges under the buckram. 

Sew lining to crocheted piece with neat slip stitches. 

Sew up the sides of bag neatly on wrong side. 

Sew the solid part at bottom of bag to lower edges of sides. 

Make a fold at top edge of each side & sew fold securely in place.

BUTTON [make 2]: 
Starting at center, ch 2.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Now pick up only the back loop of each sc.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc.  Rep from * until piece is large enough to cover the button. 

Work 2 rnds without inc. 

On next rnd dec every other sc - to dec 1 sc work off 2 sc as 1 sc

Place button inside crocheted piece & cont dec every other sc until piece is closed.  Fasten off, leaving 8” length of thread. 

RING [make 2]: 
Attach thread to bracelet & work sc closely around until bracelet is completely covered.  Join & fasten off.

Sew a Ring on each side of flap. 

Sew on Buttons to correspond with rings [see photo].
