Vintage 1940s Rapture Ribbonette Knit Bag #1012

 MATERIALS:

2 tubes Peter Pan Ribbonette
Pair #3 Knitting Needles
#3 Bone Crochet Hook

BAG:
Cast on 48 sts.

1^ST ROW:  K 12, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Sl 1, p 11.

3^RD ROW:  K 24, turn.

4^TH ROW:  Sl 1, p 23.

5^TH ROW:  K 36, turn.

6^TH ROW:  Sl 1, p 35.

7^TH ROW:  K 48.

8^TH ROW:  Purl.

9^TH ROW:  Purl.

10^TH ROW:  Knit.

11^TH ROW:  Purl.

12^TH ROW:  Knit.

Rep these 12 rows for pattern, for 30 patterns.

Then work 1^st to 8^th rows inclusive once.  Bind off.

Make another piece to match.

CENTERPIECE:
Chain 5 sts.

1^ST ROW:  Work 1 sc in 1^st st, 2 sc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in last st.  Ch 1, turn.
[Work rest of piece in back lp of sc.]

2^ND ROW:  1 Sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Work 1 sc in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Continue in this manner to work back & forth, always working 2 sts in each of 2 center sts, until you have 20 sts on each side of 2 center sts.  Fasten off.

Make another piece in same manner.

FINISHING:
With heavy sewing thread, pull a running st thru top of bag, to fit around bottom of centerpiece.

Sew centerpiece to top of bag, having centerpiece on outside.

Sc two top edges of bag together, starting about 4” away from end of centerpiece, & continue around bottom, crocheting together on right side of stockinette st, skipping purl side.

Fold end of centerpiece around handles, & sew to outside of bag, as shown in photo. 

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:

[Before joining finished pattern pieces]

Make paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patt & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Attach ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
