1940s Checkerboard Clutch #1029
Quick & easy to create, this two-tone bag with the vibrant,
woven checkerboard pattern will become a season-spanning favorite…you‘ll want
to recreate in many colors!
MATERIALS:
3 – 75 yd spools White Corde
3 – 75 yd spools Black Corde
Interchangeable with Bagtwist, Soutache, or Straw
Bone Crochet Hook #5

BAG:
Chain 8, work 1 sc in next st & in each ch st [7 sts], ch 1, turn.
Chain 8, work 1 sc in next st & in each ch st [7 sts], ch 1, turn.
Work in sc, taking top lp of st.
Work 12 strips of white 12” long.
Work 18 strips of black 8” long.
GUSSET [BLACK]:
Work same as strips 28” long. Fasten off.
Work same as strips 28” long. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLING:
Weave strips as shown in photo.

Make 2 woven sides of bag.
Join sides with gusset by working a row of sc in white,
working around 4 sides of bag.
Than work 1 row of black.
Attach handles [if desired].

JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
[Before
joining finished pattern pieces]
Make
paper patt from crocheted pieces & lay aside to be used later.
Cut
lining according to paper patt & sew tog.
Shirr
lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.
Insert
finished lining in bag.
Sew
in zipper [if desired].
Attach
ornament to zipper pull tab [if desired].
Note: Cardboard
or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to
give shape extra support.
