1960s Manhattan Elegance Gown #1171
SIZES:
Directions are for Size 12.

Changes for Sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
1 Pair Boye Knitting Needles #5
1 Crochet Hook #0
1 yd Silver Braid 1”
Columbia-Minerva:
Reflection, 1 oz: 19 (20-21-2) Skeins
Camelot, 1 oz: 2 (2-3-3) Balls, for Trim

GAUGE:
6 sts = 1”
8 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Back of neck to hemline = 50¾” (51”-51¼”-51½”) Allow 1” for stretch.
Width across hipline = 19” (20”-21”-22”)
Width across back = 18” (19”-20”-21”)
Width across shoulders = 14”(14¼”-14¾”-15”)
Width across sleeve = 11¾” (12”-12½”-12¾”)

NOTE:
To lengthen or shorten gown, make adjustment before 1st dec row.

BACK:
Cast on 128 (134-140-146) sts.

NEXT ROWS: K 1 row & P 1 row for 5 rows.

NEXT ROW: K next P row for turn, cast on 11 sts at end.

NEXT ROWS: K 139 (145-151-157) sts, cast on 11 sts.

Work on 150 (156-162-168) sts:
1ST ROW - WRONG SIDE: P.

2ND ROW: K 5, with yarn at back Sl 1 as to P for turning st, K to last 6 sts, sl 1, K 5.

NEXT ROWS: Rep last 2 rows to 7” above turn, end on wrong side.

NEXT ROWS: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Work in St St on 140 (146-152-158) sts to 10” above turn.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each side on next row, every 2” 5 times more, then every 1” - 7 times = 114 (120-126-132) sts.

Width across hipline is 19” (20”-21”-22”).

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each side every 3” - 3 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 108 (114-120-126) sts to 42” or 1” less than desired length above turn to underarm.

Width across back is 18” (19”-20”-21”).

ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 4 (5-6-7) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each side every other row 8 (9-10-11) times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 84 (86-88-90) sts until armhole meas 6¾” (7”-7¼”-7½”) straight above underarm.

Width across shoulders is 14”(14¼”-14¾”-15”).

SHOULDERS:
NEXT ROWS: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 6 (4-4-2) rows, then 6 sts at beg of next 2 (4-4-6) rows.

NEXT ROWS: Bind off rem 42 (42-44-44) sts for neck.

FRONT:
Work same as back to 2” less than back to underarm.

NECK:
NEXT ROW: Work 54 (57-60-63) sts & sl them to holder, work to end.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 14 times, then every 4th  row 7 (7-8-8) times more.

AT SAME TIME when front meas same as back to underarm, bind off 4 (5-6-7) sts at side edge.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 8 (9-10-11) times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 21 (22-22-23) sts until armhole matches back armhole.

SHOULDER:
Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge 3 (2-2-1) times, then 6 sts at same edge 1 (2-2-3) times.

Work other side to corres.

SLEEVES:
Cast on 46 (48-50-52) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in St St, inc 1 st each side every 1” - 12 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 70 (72-74-76) sts to 15½” or desired length to underarm.

Width across sleeve is 11¾” (12”-12½”-12¾”).

SLEEVE CAP:
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each side every other row until 32 sts rem.

NEXT ROWS: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6  rows.

NEXT ROW: Bind off rem 20 sts.

FINISHING:
Seam shoulders.

Sew sleeves in place.

Sew sleeve seams.

Turn up hem.

Turn side slit facings on turning sts & sew on wrong side.

Start above side slits, seam sides.

CUFFS: (MAKE 2):
With #0 hk & Camelot - ch 50 (50-54-54).

1ST ROW: 1 DC in 6th ch from hk for 1st M, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 DC in next ch, rep from * across = 23 (23-25-25) M, ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW: Count turning ch as 1 DC, work 1 DC in 2nd DC, * ch 1, 1 DC in next DC, rep from * across, ch 1, 1 DC in turning ch, ch 4, turn.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 2nd Row for patt, work 5 more rows, ch 1, turn.

8TH ROW: 1 SC in sp, * ch 4, 1 DC in 1st of ch-4 just made, sk 1 sp, 1 SC in next sp, rep from * across. Fasten off.

Work 8th Row on other long edge of cuff.

NECKBAND:
With Camelot - ch 184 (184-188-188).

1ST ROW: Same as 1st Row of cuff = 90 (90-92-92) M, ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW: 1 DC in 1st DC for inc, * ch 1, 1 DC in next DC, rep from * across, end ch 1, 1 DC, ch 1 & 1 DC in turning ch for inc, ch 4, turn.

NEXT ROWS: Rep 2nd Row 4 times more, ch 4, turn.

8TH ROW: Same as 2nd Row - inc 1 at each side & 2 at center back. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Seam cuffs & sew in place.

Seam neckband forming "V" at center front & sew in place.

Sew 1” silver braid over center of neckband & cuffs.
