Vintage 1941 Boston Lace Jacket #1335



Delicate as a cloud . . . warm as toast. An exquisitely dainty bed-jacket made on boxy, bolero lines, with full sleeves adding to its comfort and chic.

MATERIALS:
9oz Viyella OR Ramada 4 Ply
1 Pair #9 Viyella Knitting Needles
1 Pair #12 Viyella Knitting Needles
1 Crochet Hook #11
2 Yds Ribbon
2 Buttons

GAUGE/ TENSION:
# 9 Needles: 5 Sts = 1” Meas Over Patt
 
MEASUREMENTS:
Length from Shoulder to Lower Edge = 16”
Width Around at Underarm = 34”
Sleeve Seam = 18”

RIGHT FRONT:
Use #9 needles, cast on 38 sts.

1ST ROW (RS): P to end.

2ND ROW: K, put wool twice around needle for each st. to end of row.

3RD ROW: P, drop 1 lp of each st, to end of row.

2nd & 3rd Rows make up patt.

Cont in patt, start from 2nd row until work meas 10” from lower edge, & end at side edge.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Cont patt, cast off 5 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at same edge in each of next 7
rows (26 sts).

Now cont without shaping until work meas 14” from lower edge, & end at front edge.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDERS:
Cont patt, dec 1 st at front edge of each of next 9 rows, & end at armhole edge.

10TH ROW: Cast off 4, patt to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

11TH ROW: P 2 tog, patt to end.
Rep these 2 rows once. Cast off 5 sts.

LEFT FRONT:
Work exactly as given for right front, but reverse all shaping.

BACK:
Use #9 needles, cast on 86 sts & work patt for 10”.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Cont patt, cast off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of every row until 60
sts rem.

Now cont without shaping until work meas 15” from lower edge, & end with row on WS of
work.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDERS:
NEXT ROW: Patt 23, cast off 14, patt to end.

Work on last 23 sts as follows:

NEXT 6 ROWS: Work in patt, dec 1 st at neck edge in every row.

7TH ROW (START AT ARMHOLE EDGE) : Cast off 4 sts, patt to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

8TH ROW: P 2 tog, patt to end.

Rep these 2 rows once. Cast off 5 sts.

Rejoin wool at neck edge to rem sts & work 1 row to armhole edge.

Now compl to match 1st side.

SLEEVES:
Use #9 needles, cast on 75 sts & work in patt for 17”.

SHAPE TOP:
Cont patt, dec 1 st each end of every row until 26 sts rem. Cast off.

CUFFS:
Use #12 needles, cast on 65 sts & work in garter st (each row K) for 3”.

NEXT KOW: K 2 tog, YB, * k 6, YO, k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, YB. Rep from * to last 8 sts, k 6,
YO, k 2 tog.

Work in garter st for 2”. Cast off.

NECK & FRONT BANDS:
Use #12 needles, cast on 8 sts, & work in garter st for 14”. Leave these sts on spare
Needle.

Work another band to corres.

Now on to this same needle, cast on 112 sts, then K across 8 sts from spare needle (128
sts).

Work in garter st for 5 rows.

6TH ROW: * K 3, k 2 tog, k 3. Rep from * to end of row.

7TH ROW: K to end.

8TH ROW: Make ribbon holes as follows: K 1, * k 3, YO, k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, YO, k 3.
Rep from * to last st, k 1.

Work 5 rows in garter st. Cast off.

POCKETS:
Use #12 needles, cast on 28 sts & work in garter st for 4”. Cast off.

Work 2nd pocket to corres.

FINISHING:
Press work very carefully on WS with warm iron & damp cloth, take care not to stretch
fabric.

Join side, shoulder, & sleeve seams.

Insert sleeves into armhole, match seams with side seams & with fullness arranged at top
of sleeve in small pleats at each side of shoulder seam.

Take care when stitching NOT to stretch armhole.

Use crochet hk, work following crochet edging around front & neck band on each edge,
along top & lower edge of cuffs, top of pockets & around lower edge of garment.

Work as follows:
1ST ROW: 1 DC all along row.

2ND ROW: 1 DC into 1st st, * , 3 CH, sk 3 DC, 1 DC into next st. Rep from * to end.

3RD ROW: Work 5 DC into each of these CH lps.

When crochet edgings are compl, stitch front & neck bands into place, joining garter st
bands to garment on WS at back of crochet edge.

Join cuffs & attach these to sleeves, place seams to underarm seam & arrange fullness to
fit.  Respond with fullness at top of sleeve.

Stitch garter st cuff to sleeve edge at back of crochet border.

Turn ½” of top of pocket down onto RS & stitch 1 onto each front, approx 2” from front
borders, & to top of crochet border at lower edge.

Press crochet edging & all seams.

Thread ribbon thru holes at neck & cuffs.

Make 2 rosettes of ribbon & sew to each side of neck.

Make buttons into link & fasten thru crochet lp.
